Hi,
I have a little network with a Linux Redhat 5.1 with 2 ethernet cards on
two different networks. Each of those card are relied at a Win95 PC.
Each W95 can ping his card and the card where is attached on the Linux PC.
But the card on W95 cant ping the other card in the Linux and in the other
Win95 !
I think my routing table is ok but i'm not sure!

I figured it out. The Scripts section on the Gnome-PPP dialer section
needs to be filled out.

PPP problems seem to be now all solved.

This is what I did: 1) edited the
etc/hosts file where I left the original IP address and the
localhost.localdomain name but added a fictitious address ranging from
192.168.x.1 (where x is any number between 0 and 255); 2) edited the
etc/HOSTNAME file (that's right, the file's name is CAPITALIZED!!!) by
deleting the original IP address and localhost.localdomain name and entering
instead the one I created; 3) edited the name of the host in the Contro
Panel, Networking subpanel to agree with what I did in steps 2 and 3. The
reason why I got a "none" hostname before is because I had used an
apostrophe in my original choice of name which, finicky as Linux is, was a
nono. That did the trick. It's working fine now. BTW, the tips and steps and
counselling for all of this came from all of you guys and especiall brom
Bill Staehle in Phoenix, Arizona. Thank you all!!!!!!

What I do is telnet to my Linux box as a user, example as col. Then when my
login is successful, I type "su" to change to the super user or root user,
then
enter my root password. Then I'm connected as root.

LINUX Network Toolkit , Paul G. Sery, is pretty good step-by-step on
setting up an office network.

Subject: EtherNet Card Problems

Last night I swapped out my network cards in my server, recompiled, and got
everything working. After I booted, and got the cards set up I started
getting this error message:

eth0: Interrupted while Interrupts are masked! isr0x0 imr 0x0

My current setup is an AMD K6 233 CPU with 128M ram.
eth0 is a Linksys EtherPCI LAN Card II at irq 5, io 6100
eth1 is a 3Com 3C905B (PCI) at irq 5, io 6000

the Linksys uses module ne2k-pci, and 3Com uses 3c59x

Anyone have any clue as to what is causing this error, and how to fix it?

Thanx

It sounds like you have some other problem. Try doing a basic networking
setup with static IP addresses. Get your internal network up and running.
Then concentrate on your external. Try tcpdump etc to ensure that you are
seeing packets from the outside world etc.

BTW I think that Redhat 5.2 has working dhcpcd as part of their network
install. Also we have a free linux masquerading firewall that works well
with @home (I use @home) at http://edge.fireplug.net.

Mark-

I can answer some of your questions. I have a cable connection provided by
MediaOne. I was originally using a NT box with some proxy software for the cable
connection. I then had 3-4 other machines connecting to the proxy. When the NT
solution proved less than robust (not MS bashing, just my personal experience) I
looked at the linux solution. I am using a P-100, 32M RAM with a 3Com 3C509
connected to the cable modem. A SMC Ultra connects to a SMC 5 port hub. The
internal machines are also connected to the hub (duh). The generic RH 5.1 install
worked fine as a firewall. While learning how to build a kernel I selected the
option to optimize as a router. I have noticed a performance improvement but do
not have any metrics. As far as handling a load, as I am writing this I have this
machine surfing and performing a 8M download. Another machine is in the process
of a 28M download. I am not noticing any lag times. Having a pipe as big as a
cable modme shows that too often servers, not the Internet is the bottle neck.

As for security, I have nothing on the machine that is acting as a firewall. I
downloaded a script tonight that implements some pretty stringent security via
ipfwadm. I have also seen equivalent scripts for ipchains. As you probably
aware, the internet has many sources of material on security issues and how to
handle them.

I hope this helps.

Subject: PPP Troubles
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 13:56:48 -0600

Hello, I just got Linux about a month ago, RedHat 5.2, and I was wondering
something about PPP.

Before I start, I have already read ISP-Hookup-HOWTO, PPP-HOWTO, and even
NET-3-HOWTO. I have tried using the scripts under
/usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5/scripts and nothing seems to work.

When I run the ppp-on script, I have it echo before and after the call to
pppd. I only see the echo before. That's OK. I have an echo in the chat
script (/usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5/scripts/ppp-on-dialer) before and after. I don't
even see the before.

I think one of the problems is I have no idea where my modem is hooked up
(ttyXX). It's a USRobotics 56k fax voice, etc, I'll spare the BS.

All I need to know is how to hookup to my ISP (PDQ.net) using any friggin
protocol that will work. I'd like to try to stick to PPP, no SLIP or DIP,
please. Thanks!

     Hi,

I recently installed Red Hat 5.2. It comes with Bind 8.1.2. I've
noticed something recently that correlates with some strange mail "problems"
that have been reported lately. I'm using the same zone files for each
domain as I was using with the previous bind 4.9.7 version where I did not
have this problem.

I have always had the MX record set as mail.whatever.com, which is set
as a CNAME to a previous A record. Besides the strange mail and CNAME
problems being reported I've noticed when I do an nslookup in interactive
mode, I type "set type=mx" and then type the domain "whatever.com". When I
do this it shows the proper MX record as mail.platinum-moon.com but it
doesn't give the IP address for mail.platinum-moon.com. If I change the
mail.whatever.com from a CNAME to an A record with the IP address it then
works fine, however I never had to do that with bind 4.9.7.

First I'm trying to configure linux machine with my own ipaddress (BTW:My

When I do
ifconfig -a
It shows only loopback interface lo and not eth0 interface.
During startup of linux I see a message

I added line
append="ether=9,0x300,eth0" to lilo.conf and no improvement

I have network cards on both the machines. I connected these two using
X-over 10baseT cabel.

I think linux is not finding my ethernet card.

But all in all its no matter what i put there in, it dosent work.

I have tried the following.
SMBPASSWORD created under /etc/
user accounts created on the linux box
In SMB.CONF i tried this.
admin users = test
vaild users = test
username level=8

hosts allow = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(and entering in hosts.equiv & hosts.allow in /etc/)

And on my last i tried in smb.conf "force user = root".

But i dont get ride of this password box:(

I received this error if I did not capitalize the NT/95 share name when
invoking the smbmount command.

Also, even though you may not require a password from a 95 box, you should try
the command with a login ID and password. This solved a problem here as well.

I'm coming in on this thread a bit late, but there are two utilities, rsh and
rexec, that allow the remote execution of a program. These are standard Unix
utilities. I've seen reference to both these programs for WinXX and they also
come with packages such as Hummingbird. Rsh has the advantage of not needing
a password if the correct .rhosts exists in the home dir of the user signing
on. Rexec needs both a userid and password. I have icons on my NT desktop
that allow me to shdown or reboot any of my Linux servers by just clicking on
them. I can't send you the programs because they're part of my Hummingbird
package, but I've seen them on various Win freeware/shareware sites.

Subject: Kernel 2.2.1 with ipfwadm problem, please help !
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 20:12:49 -0000

Hi

I am running Kernel 2.0.35 with IP-Masq. and everything is working fine.

When I upgrade my kernel to 2.2.1 (hopefully its stable :) and when I use
ipfwadm for IP-Masq. such as

ipfwadm -F -p deny

I got this message

ipfwadm: setsockopt failed: Invalid argument

I also notice, something when I compile the kernel 2.2.1 is, there is new
option Linux Socket Filtering ? I dont pretend to know anything about it but
from the sounds of it, I enable it !! Is it the right thing to do ? or Is
there anything else ?

Thanks for all the comments.

Subject: Getting access for normal users through samba and Win95
Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:36:04 GMT

Hey all

I am currently playing around with RH 5.0 and Samba. I use smbmount to
mount a Win95 directory over a small network. However, I can not set
the directory permissions when mounting the Win95 box.

Before mounting the directory, it looks similar to this...

drwxr-xr-- root root Win95-mount

After mounting with the command 'smbmount', it changes to:

d--------- root root Win95-mount

I can not use 'chmod' to change the permissions and I have played with
smbmount to no solutions. I have full access to both the linux box and
Win 95.

I have been playing with this for a while and still can not get it to
work.

P.S I haven't upgraded yet since purcashing the standard redhat
package... i think its 1.9.17p4-3 if thats needed.

Any help is greatly appreicated - Please could you respond by email as
well as I only have limited access to news.
