Hi!

This looks like in interrupt problem. irq 4 and irq 3 are used vor
com1 and com2. If you want to use one of these interrupts for
something else you should disable the comport in the bios setup first.
Does your soundcard really need two irqs? One of them is for the ide
channel on the soundcard (i guess), you need that?

bye, harald

P.S.: de.alt.comm.isdn4linux is a good newsgroup for your question.

Subject: Pls help: Ethernet and Ethernet card probs
Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:07:16 -0500

Hello all,

First, if these questions have been asked already, i apologize in advance.

i am running RH 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36 on a large ethernet (static IP)
with an Ne 2000 card.

My problems are these:

at boot up, the card is not detected.
(on the rh faq, it said to try insmod and set the irq and io with insmod.
after this, the card is detected, however, all those settings are lost
after a reboot)

after logging in, i cannot make any internet connections.
(aside from the ethernet detection, the problem seems to be connected with
my routing tables and settings associated with the ethernet card)

the routing table (/sbin/route) only shows my loopback, but not my
gateway; how do i set up my tables so eth0 knows to use xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as
its main router?

and how do i make these fixes permanent so i don't have to do them each
time i reboot or boot up. (i run three operating systems on this machine;
hence the reboot).

i know there were a lot of questions there, but i will be extremely
appreciative of any help that i may get

Thanx in advance
~ Miller

Subject: error:ppp link is not active on ppp0??
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 23:58:57 -0700

I have no idea what's going on. If I use the ppp-on script, it seems to log
me on, for about 1min. During that time if I try to use ppp-off, I get that
error in hte subject.

However if I activate my hookup via netconfig (from control panel) ppp-off
says it disconnected from ppp0. However, I seem to be still connected. AND
about every 45 secs, the computer tries to reconnect.

Using minicom it seems that I logon to my isp (my university) but to some
unknown aix window. But at least I'm connected, I just don't know hte
commands for that window.

Does anyone understand what's going on. In win95 I logon and into the
browser. In Linux I don't have a browser set up yet. I don't know if I need
some sort of browser.

Is the ppp-dial-up script 'chatting' with my isp? And what or where exactly
is ppp0?

At least the pnp modem works. Or might that be the problem?

Subject: collisions on the NICs - news @ 5
Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 06:29:12 GMT

I upgraded by box from rh 5.1 2.0.35 to 5.2 2.0.36 and I've noticed an
increase in the amount of collisions on both NIC cards - though they are
growing at different rates.

Some observations:

I'm running ipfwadm and this is working correctly. I did try upgrading my
ipportfw to the latest version .37 (per his docs) and had problems during
the patch load where it requested a reverse (-R) load, I agreed and the
patch loaded but it still does not work. I have not rebuilt the kernl so I
really don't suspct that is the problem.

I also noticed that Apache has stopped working even though it's up and
running, it's not processing requests on port 80.

The rest of my configuration is the same as before the upgrade. Those files
over written by the upgrade we're saved off as rpmsave (?) so the rebuild
went without a hitch and the system was back up and running after 1 hr and 1
re-compile to get my NIC cards registered.

Any thoughts?

I'm writing a Perl script to benchmark a Compaq server comparing
the performance between Linux and Windows NT. I'm currently
running RedHat Linux 5.2 and wu-ftpd versio 2.4.2b18-2.1 on the
server, but will soon be loading MS Windows NT 4.0 Server..

I'm noticing some interesting behavior on my testing with 4 processes
transferring files to/from the Compaq from a small HP test machine (an
E35). Several times during the test, all connections will start to be
refused. If I restart inetd ("/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet restart"), then the

condition clears.

There are no messages in the syslog (/var/log/messages) that suggests
any problems. I'm not sure what to look at in the ps or netstat output
to point me to the cause of the behavior.

Can anyone suggest some things to look at in the configuration to help
explain what is happening? I'd really like to eliminate this behavior
as
well. I'm trying to demonstrate the Linux will be more robust than
Windows NT.

Won't ever work with LINUX or any ethernet. The equipment you describe is
SNA terminals. They run over Token Ring using a Front End processor to
interface with the main frame.

This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. Questions
about the proposed group should be directed to the proponent.

Proponent: Erik de Castro Lopo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Votetaker: Jeremy Billones <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

RATIONALE: comp.os.linux.security

The number of users of the Linux Operating System has grown
significantly over the last few years. A large number of these new
users are connecting their machines to the internet via modems with
little or no thought about the security of their machines. In
addition, the standard installation procedure of most Linux
distributions results in a machine with maximal capabilities but also
with a number of possible security holes. A search of a usenet
archiving site such as dejanews would quickly find a large number of
linux security discussion threads scattered across numerous existing
newsgroups.

The existing newsgroup comp.security.unix is useful but its
discussion content is aimed more at the unix administrator level.
Therefore a newsgroup specifically aimed at the home/small business
Linux user would complement rather than replace discussion on
comp.unix.security.

CHARTER: comp.os.linux.security

This newsgroup is dedicated to the discussion of issues related to
establishing and maintaining the security of machines running the
Linux Operating System on all processor architectures.

Open discussion of techniques and software for protecting machines
against remote attacks (via a network connection) as well as attacks
from untrusted local users are welcome. This discussion can include
information about which applications are vulnerable, the form of the
vulnerability and snippets of source code for demonstrating the
vulnerability.

The posting of commercial information to this group is permitted only
if the information is directly relevant to security and the Linux
Operating System.

Messages which are cross-posted to or from any advocacy newsgroup are
not welcome. As this is a discussion group, the posting binaries is
strongly discouraged. Spamming, ECP and EMP of any sort is absolutely
not tolerated.

END CHARTER.

HOW TO VOTE:

Follow these instructions *exactly*! Votes are counted by computer.
You should send E-MAIL (posts to a newsgroup are invalid) to:

    [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please do not assume that just replying to this message will work.
Check the address before you mail your vote. Your mail message
should contain one and only one of the following vote statements:

    I vote YES on comp.os.linux.security
    I vote NO on comp.os.linux.security

    Voter name:

If your mail software does not indicate your real name (for example, AOL
does not), include _exactly_ the statement above on a _separate_ line
and add your name after the colon. Having your name in your signature line
is NOT enough! Do NOT join the lines together or remove the words
"Voter name"!

You may also vote ABSTAIN (which records an empty vote) or CANCEL (which
removes any earlier votes). ABSTAIN does not affect the final vote count
in any way but is listed, whereas CANCEL is not.

If these instructions are unclear, please consult the Introduction to
Usenet Voting or the Usenet Voting FAQ at http://www.iki.fi/~jpatokal/uvv/.

IMPORTANT VOTING PROCEDURE NOTES:

Standard Guidelines for voting apply. One vote per person, one account
per voter. Votes must be mailed directly from the voter to the votetaker.
Anonymous, forwarded or proxy votes are not valid. Votes mailed by
WWW/HTML/CGI forms are considered to be anonymous votes.

Vote counting is automated. Failure to follow these directions may
mean that your vote does not get counted. If you do not receive an
acknowledgment of your vote within three days contact the votetaker
about the problem. It's your responsibility to make sure your vote
is registered correctly. Duplicate votes are resolved in favor of
the most recent valid vote. Addresses and votes of all voters will
be published in the final voting results post.

The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest of
persons who would read a proposed newsgroup. Soliciting votes from
disinterested parties defeats this purpose.

If you must, direct people to the official CFV as posted
to news.announce.newgroups. Distributing pre-marked or otherwise

Hi. I want to run a mini-ISP. Basically a LAN with some dila-out accounts.
I also want to have a pop server, web server, ftp server, irc, etc.

I know for POP server I mgiht have to go with qmail or imap.
Web server= Apache.

But, I have 3 computers here( 2 are 486dx4's, and one is a pentium). I want
to connect my local LAN to the 'net, serv a site and pop mail(local users
and internet users), and also be able to have some ppp serving software for
when I am on the road. Here is my network:

486dx475mhz, 32mb ram, 800mb hd (Linux..want to use as a server)
486dx4 100mhz, 48mb ram, 1gig hd (Linux..want to use as a server)
Pentium 166mhz, 96mb ram, 2gig hd (Linux..want to use as a server)
Dual Pentium II 266mhz, 128mb ram, 9gig (Personal Linux box)
BeBox dual 66mhz, 64mb ram, 1gig (BeOS R3.2)
NeXT Color Turbo 33mhz, 128mb ram, 2gig (Openstep 4.2)
Pentium 200mhz, 64mb ram, 1.2gig (Win98..I'm on it now)
ethernet hub

So, I want to serv a site on the internet, run a LAN, serv pop mail(and
offer pop mail to any user--unlimited accnts). I have a dedicated line to
the internet and a static IP, and a registered domain. How can I get this to
work with my above hardware(what should I use my boxes for and what
software--I want to use the first 3 systems on the list as the servers for
the 'net and lan)? Please reply by email also to:

I have 3 computers networked together. One is linux RedHat 5.0 , the
other two are windows 95. Most of the network setup was done automatically
from the RedHat install. I have samba set up and I can access all comupters
over the network.

My problem is that I get a long delay ( around a minute and a half )
when I try to telnet to the linux box. I also get a long delay when I use
smbclient to find shared drives on the windows boxes. I can ping with no
delay at all. I can mount with smbmount with no delay at all, and I can
transfer files with no delay at all.

I have have looked for FAQ's and found many HowTo's. I have read many
HowTo's. I haven't found any help for my problem. Can anyone out there
either tell me where a good FAQ is that addresses network problems or maybe
tell me specific configuration files that I should look at. Any help would
be appreciated.

Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 05:59:38 GMT

I have a win98 machine and at my store we have our NT server and win98
machines behind a linux firewall which also does our DHCP and DNS. Right
now I can't get in. We are on cable modems on the same segment. Before the
linux box we were just like a LAN. We all showed up in the same workgroup
even though the server was at the store and I was at my home office. It was
like being at the store at my office PC.

A partner is going to build me a box for my home office and use 128 bit
encrypted VPN to tunnel into the store linux box so I can gain access to the
network again.

I am very new at linux. I was told that this OS can't send and receive UDP
packets and other things that a win98 machine takes for granted. So playing
games like unreal is not possible, or ICQ, etc. This would be a problem
since I have mult. win98 machines and kids.

Can a hub attached to a cable modem and win98 machines have a linux box
added to the hub and then when I want to VPN to the store's box....set my
VPN on win98 to route through the linux box and then out across the web to
the store's linux box or will I have to put the machines directly behind the
linux box and loose some of the full function of the apps. on the WWW.

Or, can I use 2 network card system one for the unrestricted www out through
the cable box and the second net card directly to the linux box to then VPN
out to the store's box?

Any and all comments please post here and e-mail me as well. I need to try
to get this resolved soon!

Thank you in advance.

Yeah she runs her own nameserver for her domain, but we are both pretty
new to this stuff.

We haven't tried adding a zone yet. The problem I have is this.
If someone in webland pings my static IP then my ISP (same as hers) knows
to route the packets directly to my machine, right. Now instead lets say
someone pings einstein.herdomain.com, HOW does my ISP know to route the
packets to me. Hmmm... yeah... I think you're right, my ISP would then
route packets to her b/c she has that domain. She would look in her
zone/hosts file and then bammo, hopefully they end up getting to me.
Hmmm.. seems I answered my own question..... oh well

We'll give it a shot.. thanks a million

I am running RedHat 5.1 on both computers. One is a pentium 166
and the other is an AMD 486 66.
I set up two computers with a serial null modem cable and
have ppp runnning on both. I used the command line:

pppd -detach crtscts lock 192.1.1.17:192.1.1.18 /dev/cua3 &

I reversed the IP's on the other computer.
I list the IP's and made up host names for each in /etc/hosts
I can telnet and ftp between both computers and have also
mounted directories remotely, but I can't send e-mail between
each computer. I am using Pine. I can e-mail to different users
within the same computer, but not between them. Talk won't work
either.
What are the issues as to why I can't do the e-mail?
Some of my thougts were:
Possible need to set up a DNS. If so exactly how do I do it?
Is there a configuration file for the mail function to tell it
that the other computer exists?
Is it possible that one of the program functions has a bug like
named and needs a patch or rpm update?

                                Thanks

Why not? Mine does have some comments from the distribution. The comment

of the resolver to get clearness on this.

I don't know how it is on linuxes (I assume you are running one) but it
might be some sort of automatic log rotating. For example BSDI's do it.

Subject: Re: Increasing the number of pty or tty to 512 ?
Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 11:36:43 -0800

Dave,

Is that an option in the makefile or somewhere in the include file that I can
change ?
I notice that at line 34 of " /usr/src/linux-2.0.36/include/linux/tty.h"

#define NR_PTYS  256

Is this where I should change. Notice that the comment right above that line
do not recommend changing it.

Also in this file: "/usr/src/linux-2.0.36/include/linux/kdev_t.h , the number
of bits for the minor
is 8 bits which turns out to be 256 tty's and 256 pty's for a type of device.
I wonder if there is any
way to increase the number of minor numbers from 256 (8bits) to 65536 (16
bits). If you look further
down (line 87) of this file, you will find there is a possibility of having
16 bits for the minor. But this
portion is disable (#if 0 ....). I wonder what would happen if I activate
that portion and use 16 bits for the pty and tty. It seems to me that if
minor portion has 8 bits, then the major will have 8 bits too. But if the
minor has 16 bits, the major can have 16 bits too. Will this change impact
the mknod command ?

If this does not work out, I am thinking about to borrow other character
device for the tty and pty.
For example, the isdnctrl0 ~ isdnctrl255 are character devices too. But I
doubt this will work, since the type of devices are identified by the major
type, right ? For example, the pty has major type of 2 and tty has major type
of 3. So the only way is to expand the minor portion of the pty and tty
device.

Thanks

James

They are willing to use chap. Why don't you use it?

You demand pap.

Are you sure this is what they want? After all it is they who gave you
your username and password. did you change them?
Why do you use [EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than just longuser ?

]# my system name (only for CHAP!)
]# name "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

?? user also works for CHAP (at least in pppd). But you are refusing to
use chap. Why?

But you said [EMAIL PROTECTED] and hee you just have longusername. Why
the difference?
