Dhcp server was working fine until second network card was installed.
Now it gives error no subnet declared for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx which is in
the range of the second card. I only want dhcp to hand out addresses
on the subnet for the first card however. If I make a subnet
declaration for the second card it doesn't give the error anymore, but
it is trying to listen for clients on that interface now.....

What do I need to do to correct this????

Thanks for your help,

I know of two types of solution to the problem of using Linux-based X
programs on a Windows box:

1) Use an X server on the Windows machine. (Yes, the server is on the
Windows machine; that's the correct terminology, which seems backward
until you think of it in terms of the X server software providing an
input/output device for the computer, vs. for the human.) I'm aware
of only one that's freeware, MI/X
   (http://www.microimages.com/freestuf/mix/). In my experience, MI/X
works, but isn't very flexible. There are numerous commercial X
   servers for Windows.
2) Install the VNC server on Linux and use a VNC client on Windows (the
client/server terminology is reversed for VNC vs. X servers). VNC is a
different technology than X. You can also install a VNC server on
Windows, and control a Windows box remotely (even from Linux). In my
experience, VNC produces better results than MI/X, but that might not
   be the case for you.

I don't know which of these uses more net bandwidth, which will be a
factor in determining the system's speed.

There is a third potential solution, and that is to create a small Linux
partition on the system you want to use for this, and boot the computer
into that whenever you need to access the remote Linux system. Depending
upon how you want to use the system, this solution might or might not be
acceptable. You could even do this with a Linux system on a Zip disk
using a boot floppy for the kernel, if you wanted.

Subject: NETWORK NIGHTMARE
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 10:14:20 +0930

Hi, I have several network problems.Im using RH 6.0.

I can get my modem to dial into my ISP using minicom and
it connects fine.
Then after a few seconds it disconnects with the error message
NO CARRIER
I know that it isnt because I have a crappy modem, because It works fine
under Windows (it isnt a winmodem either)
Does anyone know any reasons why this is happening?

When I try to connect using KPPP it dials fine, and then the dialog box
says "logging on to network..." and stays like that for a few minutes..
then it gives the error message " the daemon died unexpectantly"
When I look at the log it says that my server isnt accepting my
configuration request.
Does anyone have any suggestions about that?

Another Thing-- when I try and configure netscape to use my ISPs
manual proxy configurations when I click OK it just gives me the error
mesage "warning the following host "proxy.primus.com.au" is unknown"
I configured the file resolv.conf so it lists my servers domain name,
but netscape still refuses to let me type anything.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or even URLs for any FAQs
relating to my my problems......Please help, because Im at my wits end with
all of this (Im a newbie) and my ISP wont help.

thanks..... Klea Dzonsons [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, I just downloaded and installed Redhat 6.0. I erased 5.2 before doing
so, and now I can't connect to the internet with Linux, and I forget how I
set it up before. I have a Sony 735 vaio laptop with a Netgear Fa410tx
pcmcia network card. Last time, I just installed it as an ne2kpci card and
it gave me my IP numbers, and everything worked fine. I installed Linux a
couple of different ways, all to no avail in the network part. Here is what
I have done so far. Installed Linux with PCMCIA support in the very
beginning, asked me if I wanted to set up a LAN, and I said yes, but it
didn't ask me what I had for a card, so I'm assuming it auto-detected it.
The installation before, I didn't start with PCMCIA support, and when it
asked me if I wanted LAN support, it said it couldn't find the device. Upon
boot, there is a line that says DELAYING INTERFACE ETH0 [FAILED].
When I go to netconfig, it says eth0 active at boot, currently active. I
went to linuxconf, -> basic host options and specified the eth0 card that
showed up under adapter one as ne2kpci and set it as DHCP. Running ifconfig
brought me this screen

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:C8:8C:DA:9B
            inet addr:24.128.59.72 Bcast:24.128.59.255

            collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
            Interupt:3 Base address:0x300

lo Link ecap: Local Loopback
            inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
            UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 METRIC:1
            RX packets:50 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
            TX packets:50 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
            collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

After I start Netscape and hit home to get me to a page, two error messages
pop up. The first says
'Netscape unable to lacate the server home.netscape.com
Please check the server name and try again.'

and under that another message, something about $SOCKS_NS environment.

I'm not very adept with Linux yet, so any help would be greatly
apprectiated!! - Thanks - Chris

Commands for setting serial ports usually go into /etc/rc.d/rc.serial. If
there is no such file, create it with 755 permission. The first line of
the file should be #!/bin/sh and use full paths for commands (like
setserial) just in case they are not in the path during boot.

Geez Bob is sounds like you have been around the block a couple times....

After reading your comment, I decided I better tag onto this post and maybe
get some help. I am getting frustrated as I have a brand new 256 DSL line
and I cant use it. You seem so knowledgable I am hoping you can point me in
the right direction so I can get this thing going :)

I am running the same Netgear cards you are talking about. I have a server
setup for a internet gateway. It is running Mandrake 5.3. I had a dial up
account and have been using it for the gateway with IP Masquerading, and it
worked great.

The new DSL line is in, and I have the router connected to USWest. When I
inserted NIC #2 the LAN went away. I removed the card and it came back. I
tried a 3 COM card and it still didn't work.

I am really not that knowledgable and am having a tuff time.

Any ideas why the second NIC stops the LAN. Even when it is not activated ?

Where can I go to find step by step info on how to get my Cisco 675 router
to run ?

Thanks

Subject: Need help setting up smail w/o DNS
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm setting up a small (4 machine) subnet which includes a (Debian 2.1)
Linux machine acting as a Samba server for two of the other machines
(which are load-balanced web servers running NT). The Linux box has no
internet connectivity, but does need to be able to send email to other
machines on the subnet (to send out cron-generated reports etc.)

I'm using smail as an MTA, which works fine for local delivery, but
I can't send to other hosts; sent mail just sits in the outgoing mail
spool forever. I *think* that the problem is that smail is trying to
resolve the destination address via DNS, which it can't do, since the
machine isn't connected to a nameserver; everything it needs to know
is in /etc/hosts.

I've read and re-read the smail and smail-config man pages to no avail.
I've tried turning off all the various "verify" options in the config file,
but outgoing messages still won't go. I've thought about trying sendmail
instead, but am afraid I'd just run into the same problem there.

Any suggestions?

  Thanks,
  Steve

Hello

If I just have kppp on redhat 6.0 machine, everything is great. But
when I reinstall linux and say yes to 'configure lan networking', I can
no longer surf the web. It will dial but it keeps saying 'no route to
host' or something along those lines. Here's my network setup.

my localhost is 127.0.0.1
my ethernet card is set to ip 10.0.0.1
my netmask is 255.0.0.0
the default gateway is 10.255.255.254 (linux chose this)
primary nameserver is 10.0.0.1 (linux chose this)
my domain name is linux.box
my host name is toms.linux.box
I have no secondary or tertiary nameservers listed

In kppp, my setup is for 2 dns addresses, 209.117.223.2 and
209.117.223.3 with a dynamic ip address

Again, if i have just dialup only, everything is ok, but as soon as i
add the lan stuff (im connected to a win95 box), I can not get on the
web. It dials and all but the browser just sits there. I can ping the
win 95 machine and it can ping me.

what the heck am i doing wrong.
also, i use linuxconf to setup the lan.

Hi

I've got some problems here. I'm sitting on a campus with 10Mbit
ethernet in our rooms and I've registered two IP's.

Problem: I don't have a hub and I don't want to IP-masquerade the other
computer.

Question: Is there someway to forward all ip-traffic from one of the
boxes to the other? The 'big box' has got a214.ryd.student.liu.se as
hostname, and the other adress registered is b122.ryd.student.liu.se. Is
there some way to forward all b122.* to that box from a214.*?

Thanks in advance!

The best thing we ever did as a corporation was to bin netmeeting which
had to be downloaded and installed on every machine (Linux has no
equivalent package, meetingrooms etc. don't understand netmeeting). With
Placeware,from http://www.placeware.com we simply use a browser, so I
can deliver and attend classes sitting here at my Linux machine using
netscape only to hook up to the server in California, it's a far more
elegant solution. Placeware allowed us to hook up to their site in order
to properly evaluate the product before we bought it. Now, a Linux port
would be very nice.

To avoid the separate steps of configuring each host and adding entries
for the host in DNS. dhcpd, if it were working as expected, requires
only one edit to add a host, and that's only if a static IP is desired.
