Have you tried to use fdisk from Win/MSDOS and set your Linux partition as
active, and reboot. But make sure you have another floppy with bootable
msdos and fdisk in case it failed to boot to linux. When you mentioned "I
can't boot into Linux even with my boot disk", did you typed root=/dev/hda?
(? means your linux partition) at LILO prompt?

Cheers,

Edgar

Hi there, I have just introduced Linux as the most stable, friendly,
inexpensive OS in the world in our organisation and am allowed to test
it. We have installed a popserver and samba server on it, RedHat 5.2
Linux and Imap mailserver. Now we have a strange problem. Every morning
about 9.15 hours some users (all win 95 clients) get a message stating
that they could not connect to de mailserver, check everything and if it

continues contact your system administrator, ergo me. Ten minutes later
the problem dissapears. When I look in the maillog there are a lot of
messages stating AUTHENTICATE twinkie failure. Does anyone has any idea
what is going on? I got an advice to get pop out of inetd and let it run

all the time (how?) instead of letting it start at every request. But if

that is the case, why does it work fine the rest of the day? Oh yeah,
between 8.30 and 9.00 everybody logs on, total 125 clients, which must
be a laugh for linux isn't it?

In /etc/services add something like:
telnet2345 2345/tcp
telnet3456 3456/tcp

then in /etc/inetd.conf add:
telnet2345 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

telnet3456 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

2 questions:

1. What is the minimum hardware needed to boot a client system into
linux off a network? Would just a floppy drive do it, or would I need a
small hard drive in each client machine?
Where could I find how to go about setting this up?

2. Is there a way to enable a program to access memory from another
process on a different system over a network (for distributed
computing)? I know it could probably be done with a shared ramdisk, but
that seems rather inefficient.

We are running with SuSE 6.0. We want to login with FTP (WU.FTP) pointed to
a directory which is the root of the user. This works fine. But we want to
deny this user from a telnet login.

If we change the shell entry from "bash" to something else in the passwd we
can deny him from a telnet access but we getting also an "access deny" if we
give wu.ftp just the user name.

Any suggestions? Please answer by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have configured my PPP connection using the Xwindows program "network

While it seems to be connected I am unable to PING any servers, getting the

Somehow I don't think that "root" on the linux box has an account on the NT
server - does it? - why??

If you have an login id that exists both on the linux box as well as the NT
server then use that login ID, not "root".

Furthermore, the denial of service is based upon the security = USERS and
the login ID being transmitted is "root".

Use your own ID and ensure the password on BOTH machines is the same, then
you will not be prompted for a "password" when attempting to view available
shares on the NT box. However, if the password id different on each system,
then the prompt will appear regardless of security = SHARE or USERS.

NOTE: You did NOT tell us if you are attempting to log into a DOMAIN, but
that will put a different spin on things.

Hope this helps, and if I've left anything out, I'm sure that some other
good samaritan in the news group will nave me stand correct :-)

I am having trouble with my windows work group bringing up the dial on
demand demon (diald). What is happening, is that, every 15 minuets or so
a request goes out to the ( named ) name server to resolve the name of

way to filter this request out in standard.filter of diald or have a

Your question depends what protocol (PPP, V.120, AIMux, or Bonding)
you use to connect to the Internet (ISP). In my case, I use ppp hence
I added the following initialization string
"%A4=0%A2=95@B0=2" for dual channel
"%A4=0%A2=95@B0=1" for single channel
Refer to the BitSURFR User Guide

Then you could use pppstat to check your thru-put.

I don't profess to speak the gospel on your project, but I will share my meager
wisdom.

Use IP masquerading to accomplish the 'dial out' portion of your service. Only
one IP address, and one connection is needed to the internet. If the pipe is fat
enough, you should be fine.

It seems to me that you are dedicating far more computing power to your servers
then is necessary. A P166 can handle _simple_ HTTP requests for a T1. Of
course it is a different story if you are hosting FTP, running CGI scripts, and
any of the myriad services, or processes associated with a modern web site. The
POP server and the IP masquerading can certainly be handled by one 486. I am
assuming that volume of traffic is low.

With that said, here is the plan that I have given every second of 2 minutes to
concieve. Use 1 486 for IP masquerading, and proxy service. Put the web site,
and IRC on the pentium, and then use the remaining 486 for POP, and FTP. If FTP
logs more traffic then HTTP, then exchange the pentium for the 486. I am
willing to bet that you could get away with using one 486 as a proxy/masquerade
front end, and all your additional services on the Pentium box.

Just my .02 worth.

Modem "locking" is usually done by the presence or absence of a
file of a known name, usually incorporating the name of the modem
device. The intent is to keep other (cooperating) processes from
grabbing a connection that may be in use.

> 2) What did I do to cause it to be locked?

You executed the minicom app which, upon opening the modem's
device file, created the lock.

> 3) How do I unlock the modem?

Have a look in /var/locks (or somesuch). You should find a file
which hints at a modem connection (mine, now, is "LCK..modem").
Remove the file to kill the lock, but ensure that the processes
involved are gone.

> 4) What am I doing wrong with linuxconf?

Beats me. I do it the "old-fashioned way" - via command line. :-)

> 5) Does anyone recommend a different program to set up a PPP
> connection?

Have a look at "diald". That's a program that does nothing but sit
around and "listen" for "interesting packets". When it "hears" one,
it dials the phone and establishes a PPP connection automatically.
This is an especially nice function if you're running IP masquerading
(NAT) on a single server which many client machines use.
