Ifconfig I don't get anything abnormal - just the usual info. Using the same
static IP but remember the line itself isn't even active yet. But it should
still try and fire some packets out even if they can't get past the DSL box.
It's not setup, but I'd think it would work like Windows does in this
instance - unless Linux won't send out packets in this instance for some
reason by detecting the fact that they won't go anywhere.
Thanks for the advice,

I was wondering if there is a ftp client for linux that will go through
an authenticating firewall. I am currently using Netscape get through
the firewall but I would prefer a command line client. The firewall
requires a username/password to work.
Thanks,

We use (at work) countries. Additionally, we name disks (actually mount
points) after cities in that country. This helps admin since we can
always figure out what machine a disk is on.
This is coming from a GIS company, so go figure.

I have a RH5.2 system running as an internet gateway for my home network.
I would like to use Gmail to send my IP address to my work email account.
I wrote a shell script to do this which works fine from the command line.
When I try it from "ip-up.local" or "ip-up" it fails. It seems to be a
permissions
problem.
The line that is failing is:
/usr/local/bin/maildirsmtp /var/qmail/alias/pppdir alias-ppp- mail.rmi.net
$CURIP
I also set all variables inside the script.....
MAILHOST=ips.com
MAILUSER=gmcfad
QMAILINJECT=f
export MAILHOST MAILUSER QMAILINJECT CURIP
Mabye Qmail needs to run in a certain env. ??
Any suggestions??
Thanx

I am running a somewhat complicated (for me) network in my basement. Four
PCs, some connected via 100MB Ethernet, some by 10base2. I have ip
maqsquerading working fine on the other machines (2 more Linux and 1 Win95),
in that web browsing, telnet and mail work fine. However, trying to ftp from
any PC other than mine (which has the internet connection) fails on any
command besides "pwd" and logging in to the ftp server (i.e. "ls", "mput", etc).
I am running RH5.2 with all upgrades needed for the 2.2.3ac1 kernel.
I have 2 100MB PCI and 1 10MB ISA network cards in my PC. To enable ip
forwarding, I have only this line in my rc.local:
ipchains -A forward -i eth1 -j MASQ
Eth1 being the card that is connected to the internet.

ftp requires a helper module to work. Make sure you compiled your kernel
for module support (required for masquerade) and do
'insmod ip_masq_ftp'
to load the module.

Subject: Re: ipchains, ipforwarding, kernel 2.2.3ac1 and ftp

The basic problem is this. When you do a GET or an LS, etc, a data
connection is made between the FTP server and your client. Now this
connection in made from the server to the client, so if you are behind a
fire wall, which you are in most senses, the FTP server can not create a
connection to your other PCs.
The simplest way I know of solving this is to tell the FTP clients to use
passive mode. This means it will use the telnet connection (Where you issue
the commands) as the data connection as well. This way the server never
needs to connect to the client machine. To do this in a command line FTP
program you simply type PASSIVE.
Another option is to set up an FTP proxy on the internet gateway. It may
also be possible to forward specific ports to your client machines, though I
am not sure of the logistics of this approach.
Hope this helps

Subject: Re: Realtek 8029 Ethernet Card PCI
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 23:19:08 -0500
I am a newbie Linux user myself, and I went through this same problem, so I
hope I can help.
1) you can get the new 'C' source code for the realtek pci network card at:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
You can also go to the realtek web site and they will have the uncompiled
source code also.
2) You need to some get the source code onto your linux box. I put the file
on a MS-DOS formatted floppy, mounted the floppy, and then copied the file
to my directory.
3) Once I got the file to the right working directory;
/usr/src/linux/drivers you should see all the other source code drivers for
all the other network cards. Once here you can re-compile the kernel (hence
doing a 'make modules' command) and that will re-compile all the drivers
here.
Or you can re-compile the one file 'rtl8139.c' When the file is compiled
you will have an rtl8139.o file which belongs in the
/lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/net directory. You will see all the other object
modules here.
4) use LinuxConf and setup the networking. You can set the eth0 interface
to use the rtl8139 module. You'll also be able to setup the ip address,
netmask, and gateway, etc.
5) Save the configuration, and if there are no errors when this is saved,
reboot the system.
These are the steps I took, and it took me a week of research to figure all
this. I got help from some very nice people, and I pass this information
along to you.
I realize these are not easy steps and this is more advanced work for a
Linux admin. Some people said 'just buy a nic that is supported.' But,
then I wouldn't have learned as much as I did.
Hope this helps.

IMHO Frontpage extensions are stupid.

If your using apache, checkout http://modules.apache.org. There
appear to be to modules to apache which allow apache to handle ASP pages.

Now your being funny. If you plan on connecting through a ODBC
intereface, your probably out of luck. Most unix webapps which hit
database backends use mysql. Though msql and postgresql are also
available.
: I have heard of php..can anyone give me more info on this...Thanks
PHP3 is interesting. It provide most of the functionality of ASP, but
uses its own language (which I personally don't like). It has a
decent interface to mysql and msql, and can connect to and ODBC
interface if you can find one for linux.

Yes sir, this did indeed help! This was such a simple thing to fix my
problem. Now, both my Apache Web Server and SendMail are working!
I can ping 'dilbert' and it's ip address 192.168.0.100 from itself or any
other machine on my local network.
I can certainly browse to ip address 192.168.0.100 and can see Apache fine.
Should I also be able to browse http://dilbert in this case also? I tried
this and I got my local machine web-server which is IIS 4.0.
But thanks for the help. I appreciate it!
