Perhaps, if there is no need for *any* form of privacy, we
should all send our messages via postcard, using the most
efficiently OCR'd font possible, so that the "Authorities"
        know that we're knuckling under.

As for "Authorities", who do you trust? All organizations
that *I* know of are composed of human beings. If any of
them took an interest in me I would not like to have all of
        my life open for examination...

Remember what McCarthy taught us all in the fifties- even
someone with a "clean" record can have it mis-interpreted
and twisted to suit an "Authorities" goals.

The Bill of Rights in the US isn't just a good idea- It's
the law (all of which are threatening to the "Powers that Be"
which explains why they are all threatened).

As for Linux, it'd be interesting to have a physical key (like
a PCMCIA slot in the front panel) for a PGP decryptor card so
that we can have encrypted filesystems, though I'd be concerned
that such a device can be "spoofed" (though an Open Source
environment is much like a "free society"- I can protect others
        because I'm protecting myself).

        Now...

Have I muddied the waters enough?

Finally got it last weekend. The problem was not that there was no
response, it was just so slow that I was giving up before the command
was printed and the response came back. It took about 30 secs. Once
I changed the modem to use COM3 instead of COM1 (/dev/ttyS2) and IRQ4
it worked like a charm. Thanks to those who helped.

sending email isn't a crime but I don't want just anybody rifling through
it, nobody I know wants 'authorities' peeping into their mail. Browsing
pornography isn't a crime but nobody I know want 'authorities' to make it
their business to monitor someone's browsing activities. Actually screwing

Don't get me wrong. I CERTAINLY don't think "Authorities" are God. In
fact, in most cases, they seem to be kind of screwed up.

But I say it again, why would you care what they read - UNLESS of
course, you were committing a crime. No one wants to answer that

Hi there,

No it did not. I have been just waiting to see if any more replys come in. I have
go my system going with a DE450 10Mhz card. But due to my sites UTP wiring
standards I have had to create a butched cable wall cable. Its a long story, anyhow
I would real like to get the on board controller to work. This way I will have a
much better chance of converting the other users system here, off NT and Over to
linux.

I was planning to send a mail message to [Donald Becker] and/or other on the tulip
development site to see if I can get some assistance, and what I need to feed back
to them.

Do you mind if I ask what your interest is in this, can you suggest other coursers
of action?

Cheers,
Stephen Ashley.

I've also had this. it said, loading linux and reboot immediatly. If you DO
have a clean source rerun your configuration, and turn off all hardware
'bugfixes.' Chances are you won't have the bugs they fix anyway. Once i did
that, it booted fine. Hope it helps

I agree with this idea COMPLETELY. If the idea that people do wrong is a
good enough excuse to violate our privacy, and the attitude that if we do
nothing wrong is an excuse for us not to complain, then the violation of
our privacy has nothing to do with being right or wrong. Just someone
elses interest.

The minds behind the observation systems are simply motivated by self
interest, regardless of right or wrong. If you toss money at the man, he
will jump straight into bed.

Subject: DNS entry for dynamic IP address
Date: Thu, 18 Mar 1999 22:20:07 -0500

Here's the scoop. I want to put this Linux box (Red Hat 5.2) on a static IP
address as an Internet server, e-mail server, yadda yadda yadda. Here's the
trick. I'd like to be able to have 2 computers log into the machine and have
them assigned DNS names. Both machines connect to the internet via modems
and get dynamic ip addresses. They aren't in the same subnet as the server
will be. Is there a way to do this. For example, I'd like to name my server
"terry.enon.oh.us" at IP 145.1.2.3 (These are fake numbers) (I'll get the
.us name assigned after I have the hardware working.) and the 2 computers
cheetah assigned "cheetah.terry.enon.oh.us" with IP address of 123.4.5.6 and
"tiger.terry.enon.oh.us" with IP address of 123.4.5.7. Is this possible?
Please respond via e-mail. Thank you.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my ethernet card working with linux. I have to some
extent, I found a semi-supported .c file as a driver written for it.
The driver worked, under kernel 2.0.36. However, i can't get it to
compile under 2.2.1. Does anyone have any suggestions? I get errors
like SLOW_DOWN_IO not defined, dev_tint not declared, etc. Maybe
someone that knows about drivers can fix it? I tried, but I know too
little about network drivers to understand how I need to fix it. If
anyone is interested email me.

Thanks!

Lying, old man! That modem is preconfigured to use COM2, IRQ3!

Subject: ne.o & 3c509.o compiled ???
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 17:30:20 +0800

Before, I haven't build the kernel.
I need to prepare the file /etc/conf.modules:

alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300
alias eth1 3c59x

And today, I try to build the kernel.
I have chosen the [Y] in both 3com NIC support and NE2000 support.
So, I won't got this two modules(ne.o and 3c59x.o) any more during building.
Then, the problem happened !!!
On starting:
...
Enable IPv4 packet forwarding.
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
...
eth1: unknown interface. (NE2000 NIC change from eth0 to eth1)
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5

What's more, I try to copy back the files:
    ne.o to /lib/modules/2.2.3/net/ne.o
    3c59x.o to /lib/modules/2.2.3/net/3c59x.o

Then the system report:
...
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.3/net/3c59x.o: kernel module version mismatch
/lib/modules/2.2.3/net/3c59x.o was compiled for kernel version
2.0.36 while this kernel is version 2.2.3.
eht1: unknown interface.
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
...

What should I do now, is that supports been compiled to kernel yet ???
I have chosen [Y] for these 2 NIC support already !!!
Would you please offer your Kindly Help ?

There are several methods of determining which OS you are running. One
of the simplest is a port scan. Another method that can be more prosice
is TCP/IP stack fingerprinting. This method examines the behavior of the
TCP stack for certin inputs. This combined with a port scan can give you
the version (to a few kernel revisions of linux) of an operating system
a person is running.

No, you're running Linux and there's a cron that is called "logrotate".
Poke around your system under /etc/cron.xxx
{hourly|daily|weekly|monthly} and see what you come up with.

I just found out there's another long delay when adding users - it takes
the useradd command a long time to return.

When I add a user with "/bin/false" as shell, the login delay also
occurs - I think this might indicate that the delay is not somehow
related to the shell, maybe due to any lookup done in the shell
configuration or whatever.
