I'm trying to install a 3c515 on a Compaq Presario
CDS 633 with SuSe 5.3 and I'm using the 3c515.o
driver who came with SuSe (is version 0.99).
This is the actually NIC's configuration:
IRQ: 10
I/O: 0x200
DMA: 3
(of course i've tryed many other valid configurations starting
from the automatic one).
But the system seems to not recognize my card

Subject: IP Masq/Firewall & Apache question - how can I...
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 06:15:38 GMT
I want to be able to run Apache on my Linux box so that I can connect from
my internal
network (192.168.1.x), but have it blocked from outside - an intranet, if
you will.
I have TCI @Home cable service, so I have a dhcp assigned outside address,
and two
Windows machines on the internal network. When I'm not connected to @home, I
can
access the Apache server okay. But, when I'm connected, I can only reach the
Apache
server from outside - the opposite of what I want! I can still ping,
telnet, and ftp to the linux
box - I just can't get connect via http. I've tried binding Apache to just
the 192.168.1.1
interface, but that didn't work, either.
Can I do something with the ipfwadm firewalling rules?
I've tried figuring it out from the man pages, but I can't get it working.
Here's my setup:
Red Hat 5.2, 2.0.36 kernel:
192.168.1.1 on eth0
dhcp assigned address on eth1
NT:
192.168.1.2
Win 95:
192.168.1.3
IP Masq. rules in /etc/rc.local:
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0

What is the Real World (tm) ? (= MS World (c) !)
Thats right there are many Sites on the Internet coded with ASP, but I
thing its the right choice to get back on the open path, and change to
an alternativ free and open standart.
The people the have used ASP have used an free MS tool that bounds the
people to MS platforms.
ASP pages consist of Basic code and the use of DCOM Elements where no
free Implementation exists. Because many of this standarts developt
from MS with many extenstion only for the MS Platforms.
Change to an free source language gives us the ability to quicker
develop the features the we all need to do your work.

Subject: Modem not responding !
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 10:57:11 +0100
Hi,
I've just installed the RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36). My modem is a USR
56K professional message modem (external modem). I still have a winmodem
that I don't use anymore inside my computer.
Under Windows 95, my modem is connected on COM 1 (port 03F8, irq 4).
Therefore in control-panel I set my modem to /dev/cua0 (I've also tried
/dev/ttyS0).
Reading the Serial-HOWTO, I try to talk to my modem with kermit but I
get no answers at all (not even a beep !).
My mouse is an Intellimouse connected on psaux (PS/2), thus there
shouldn't be a conflict between my modem and my mouse.
In /var/log/dmesg I have :
Serial driver version 4.13 with no serial options enabled
PS/2 auxiliary pointing device detected -- driver installed.
Shouldn't I have some lines about my serial ports ?
When typing setserial -g /dev/cua0 I get :
/dev/cua0, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
Is it normal to get an unknown UART ? I set UART to 16550A but it didn't
change anything.
Is it possible that the winmodem still inside my computer hides in some
way the other modem ?
Any ideas ?
Laurent

What's the best way to sync two linux servers so that the
/etc/passwd and /users directories are shared between two servers,
so that for instance httpd runs on one box and sendmail runs on the
other box, sharing the required directories?
Is there a HOWTO on this?

You should have MX records for all the machines whose mail should be
handled by your Linux system and they all should point to this
machine. Btw, MX records point IP numbers (or their associated names),
not other MX records, to the best of my knowledge.
If you have done so on your official nameserver and it still doesn't
work, get back to me.
Bye.

I have no clue to what I'v done.
My linux box was working fine, and while a was doing som tweaking( I guess
not. he he) I'v fuc.. up my system.
After a restboot I could no longer ping myselft.
I can't ping localhost, hostname or own IP address. (I can ping this box
from other box'es on the network)
I'v figured out that the localhost route is gone. And when I check out
the Interface section of the Network configutator (X- windo) the 'lo'
interface is inactive.
Thr route table look like this :

I have yet to hear of anyone using Linux's NFS *successfully* in anything I
would consider a high volume situation. It also seems that recent NFS
releases on Linux have either been bug-ridden, security-hole-ridden, or both.
FreeBSD's NFS support is much faster, and slightly more reliable, but you
have the problem of running FreeBSD (which, IMHO is a much 'quirkier' OS in
general).
I hate to say it (because anyone that sells UNIX is evil), but NFS is one
area where Sun boxes really shine. _Especially_ when you're willing to give
up speed (which Suns definitely lack) for reliability (which is Sun's
defining characteristic).

Have you taken a look at CVSup? CVS is *extremely* tempermental, and if you
screw up the lockfiles (which is _going_ _to_ _happen_ sooner or later, if
you're using NFS) your repository is pretty much hosed. CVSup is a CVS-aware
remote distribution program that you could use to mirror CVS repositories
efficiently rather than mounting them. There's a Linux port of cvsupd (it's
written in modula-3, which nobody has installed, so I suggest finding a
pre-compiled binary), and the cvsup client software for FreeBSD is omnipresent
(it's how FreeBSD distributes itself).
> Speed is not a real issue in this instance, but reliability is.
If you have the resources, it's probably worth your time to look for a
mid-range SPARC (an ultra-1 or ultra-2 would be ideal). _Nobody_ does NFS
serving better than Sun, and their machines are so reliable I swear they
could take a shotgun blast at point-blank range and keep running. Running
sloooowly, of course, but they'd keep running.
I haven't had much experience with it myself, but I suppose SolarisX86 might
be worth looking at as well.

Really? Please define "great". I know some people that have been developing
a system that's very similar to Apache's ProxyPass, who would be very
interested in getting some hard figures on performance.

Subject: modem set up
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 11:14:38 -0800
new to linux using redhat 5.2 kernel 2.0.36 on an i486
trying to set up a modem and Im having trouble setting up a serial
connection for it.
I have:
serial mouse set up on cua0
/dev/cua0, URT: 16450, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
an ethernet card that uses IRQ: 3
and with the modem connected and turned on, running statserial returns
device info only on cua0. All the other ports(cua1, cua2, cua3) return
statserial: TIOCGET failed: Input/output error
Can anyone provide some info on how I can set up the modem on a serial port?
Thanks

Subject: PPP connect problem, not for the faint-hearted
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 18:55:07 -0500
I'm having problems connecting to my ISP, using PPP on RedHat 5.2. I'm
using
BellAtlantic as my ISP, and they "don't support linux", or anything
other than
WinTel or Mac, basically. So I'm not getting much help from them.
So here's what I've done:
As root:
Run control panel.
Select modem config, select cua0 as modem connection.
Run Network Configurator
Pick Interfaces
Add PPP
Selected Use PAP, with my username and password
Input proper phone number, nothing fancy.
Added ppp options: 'debug kdebug 7'
Everything seems to proceed fine, except here is my syslog:
What does the "frame with bad fcs" error mean? I'm a unix software
developer, so I know what's going on. Just don't have much experience
with Linux.
This is with basically a clean system install. No other programs or
packages
have been added. RedHat 5.2 straight from the CD from the Box from
Borders.
Any help?
BTW, using external USRobotics Courier V.Everything modem, standard
cable.

Carl Nygard

Subject: pcmcia freezes me to death
Date: 19 Mar 1999 07:42:38 GMT
Hi,
I,ve got a Micropoint Iliission with the pcmcia-cs-3.0.8 module combined
with 2.2.3 Linux Kernel. Starting PCMCIA freezes the machine.
probe -m shows an i82365 like pcmcia chipset in my machine. Still, loading
the modules by hand shows that all other related modules don't cause a
crash, but the i82365 does
When i relay the output to logfiles it only shows the module going in for a
restart... and then it stops.
How to debug this?
Anyone has a clue how to handle this.?
Regards,
Mario Schrijver

Hi Martin and Greg,
Thanks for both your replies... I will break the seal and see what
happens... I'd like to add a 4th question if you don't mind... namely I
already have Windows NT installed on my dual processor system, and have a
free partition on my HD... would Linux be able to coexist on the same HD
with NT, could I stick it in partition 4 and have it leave NT relatively
untouched? Anyway, while waiting for your reply, I'll be opening the seal
and trying to figure out which of the 4 enclosed Linux books to try
reading/printing (thank god for fast autoduplexing laser printers).
Thanks

Hi - I wasn't able to do that either - but all of my problems vanished after
having upgraded to kernel 2.2.3. Cheers, juergen.

Put one of them onto a different IRQ and try again. While the PCI
architecture allows proper IRQ sharing , not all the Linux
drivers do as well.
