I recently set up networking on my machine. After I installed a 3C509
Ethernet adapter, I ran into the following problem:

- I set up all the routes and IP's correctly
- I could ping the machine itself
- I could ping localhost.
- I could NOT ping anything else on the network.

This puzzled me for a week. I read every singe HOWTO on networking that I
could get. Nothing helped. Then I read on Dejanews that someone recommended
turning off Plug-n-Play on the machine. That did the trick.

Please note: a lot of newbies like me have no idea that Plug-n-Play may
cause this problem. I understand that, if you came all the way with Linux,
you know this is a given, but if whoever keeps track of these things could
make a note that PnP is problematic, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Oliver

Hello folks. I would like to know if anyone could give me ideas on the best
way to hook my laptop (win95) up to my desktop (redhat 5.1). The laptop is
actually my school's computer, so I couldn't make any major changes to it. It
currently has a Xircom CreditCard Ethernet Adapter 10/100 installed in it
which I use to connect to my school's network. The linux box doesn't have a
network card, but I could probably purchase one if necessary (and
affordable).

I would like to do more than just share files. I'm experimenting with network
programming, and would like to be able to connect these as client/server
machines. I've been using computers for a fairly long time, so a general
explanation would suffice, I just have not dealt with networking as of yet.
Thanks for your help!

Eric

Have you re-built the initrd image by using
mkinitrd ?

If you have set
[Y] in both 3com NIC support and NE2000
[Y] Enable IPv4 packet forwarding
when building the kernel, they are already
compiled into the kernel image.

You can check the eth drivers by
dmesg |grep eth

Can you actually use the ethernet by running the
new kernel?

        Perhaps, if there is no need for *any* form of privacy, we
        should all send our messages via postcard, using the most
        efficiently OCR'd font possible, so that the "Authorities"
        know that we're knuckling under.

        As for "Authorities", who do you trust? All organizations
        that *I* know of are composed of human beings. If any of
        them took an interest in me I would not like to have all of
        my life open for examination...

        Remember what McCarthy taught us all in the fifties- even
        someone with a "clean" record can have it mis-interpreted
        and twisted to suit an "Authorities" goals.

        The Bill of Rights in the US isn't just a good idea- It's
        the law (all of which are threatening to the "Powers that Be"
        which explains why they are all threatened).

        As for Linux, it'd be interesting to have a physical key (like
        a PCMCIA slot in the front panel) for a PGP decryptor card so
        that we can have encrypted filesystems, though I'd be concerned
        that such a device can be "spoofed" (though an Open Source
        environment is much like a "free society"- I can protect others
        because I'm protecting myself).

        Now...

        Have I muddied the waters enough?

Hi,

Anybody got a Teles 16.3c ISA PnP ISDN card working with
Linux kernel 2.0.36??

I've compiled the ISDN subsystem as a module...
HiSax drivers as modules... here's the relevant section in
the .config file...

CONFIG_ISDN=m
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP_VJ=y
CONFIG_ISDN_MPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_LOOP=m
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_HISAX=m
CONFIG_HISAX_EURO=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_0=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_3=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELES3C=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELESPCI=y
CONFIG_HISAX_S0BOX=y

Booted with this kernel... got isapnp to load the following isapnp.conf..

(CONFIGURE TAG2620/209717183 (LD 0
(IO 0 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0300))
(INT 0 (IRQ 10 (MODE +E)))
(NAME "TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c Plug&Play}")
(ACT Y)
))

ran isapnp and got ...

Board 1 has Identity 76 04 03 02 01 00 20 32 0d:  CIR2000 Serial No 67305985 [checksum
76]
Board 2 has Identity bd 0c 80 07 bf 20 26 27 50:  TAG2620 Serial No 209717183
[checksum bd]
TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c Plug&Play}: Port 0x300; IRQ10 --- Enabled OK

BUT when i tried to load the HiSax modules by modprobe... i
got the following errors...

# modprobe hisax type=14 protocol=2 io=0x300 irq=10
Initialization of hisax failed
Initialization of hisax failed
ISDN subsystem Rev: 1.44.2.9/1.41.2.11/1.48.2.27/1.28.2.2/none loaded
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 1
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 2
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 3
HiSax: Card Teles 16.3c not installed !
Initialization of hisax failed
ISDN-subsystem unloaded

What could be the problem? any ideas?

John Wong

Finally got it last weekend. The problem was not that there was no
response, it was just so slow that I was giving up before the command
was printed and the response came back. It took about 30 secs. Once
I changed the modem to use COM3 instead of COM1 (/dev/ttyS2) and IRQ4
it worked like a charm. Thanks to those who helped.

Most *ISP*s don't give a rip to track you unless they are given reason
to.
Do you have any idea what kind of storage would be required to track all
that.

My rental building complex wants to save money and not fix
the intercom and door buzzer. They want to hijack all the
phone lines in the building and run them through
a general intercom-buzzer system. When some one rings I will
be bounced off line. Who knows what else they can decide
to do with those lines.

Howdy,

    I have that specific hardware (Netgear hub and 2 NICs). I also
purchased another Netgear NIC (FA 310TX) and have an older 3COM ISA Card for
a machine that dosn't have a PCI slot.

    When I first installed Red Had 5.1, I chose the DEC 21040-family
ethernet driver (tulip.c) and it didn't actually work untill I replaced it
with the tulip.c driver from the Netgear floppy.

    Works like a champ. Good luck and happy networking.

Hi,

Wonder if any of u can help me out with a little problem i'm
having with my Teles ISDN card & Linux...

I can't seem to get the kernel to recognize the interrupt
i've set for the card... here's the details..

I'm using kernel 2.0.36 and a Teles 16.3c ISA PnP card...

Here's the relevant section of my /usr/src/linux/.config :-

=========================================
CONFIG_MODULES=y
CONFIG_ISDN=m
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP_VJ=y
CONFIG_ISDN_MPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_LOOP=m
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_HISAX=m
CONFIG_HISAX_EURO=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_0=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_3=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELES3C=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELESPCI=y
CONFIG_HISAX_S0BOX=y
=========================================

I've compiled the ISDN subsystem as a module and also the HiSax drivers
for Teles 16xx all as modules.

Booted up with the new kernel

Here's my /etc/isapnp.conf file :-

=========================================
(READPORT 0x0203)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING

(CONFIGURE TAG2620/209717183 (LD 0
(IO 0 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0300))
(INT 0 (IRQ 10 (MODE +E)))
(NAME "TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c Plug&Play}")
(ACT Y)
))
(WAITFORKEY)
=========================================

Did an "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" and got the following :-

========================================= lspci not found, so PCI resource
conflict not checked Board 1 has Identity bd 0c 80 07 bf 20 26 27 50:
TAG2620 Serial No 209717183 [checksum bd] TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c
Plug&Play}: Port 0x300; IRQ10 --- Enabled OK
=========================================

OK.. no problem so far... then i did the modprobe hisax like this and
got the results as follows:-

=========================================
# modprobe hisax type=14 protocol=2 irq=10 io=0x300
ISDN subsystem Rev: 1.44.2.9/1.41.2.11/1.48.2.27/none/none loaded
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 1
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 2
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 3
HiSax: Card Teles 16.3c not installed !
Initialization of hisax failed
ISDN-subsystem unloaded
=========================================

Something's not right here... can't pinpoint exactly where it is... tried
putting the card to another PC but got the same results... MAYBE it could
be the card being faulty OR something else... hope u can help out here..
Thanx ;) ;)

I have an ActionTec FastNet PRO 10/100 CardBus on a Mitac 5033T: with
some imagination, I guessed that it features a DEC 21143 chipset, so it
can be drived with the 'tulip_cb' driver under Linux.
 I'm using linux-2.2.3 on AMD K6-2/333.
 This card is recognized and powered on but in a couple of seconds
starts emitting messages like that:
 eth0: 21140 transmit timed out, status f0120000, SIA 000000c6 ffff0001

 eth0: transmit timed out, switching to 10baseT media.

 It continues with these messages until I stop the pcmcia service at
all.
 I had compiled the latest tulip driver 0.9 as a module for CardBus but
it does not work.

 Does anybody knows how to fix the problem of media recognition? It is
some other problem behind that?

Here in comp.os.linux.setup, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (doole) spake unto us, saying:

What happens if that Authority decides to use your information in a
manner which harms you? Or if someone else steals that information
from that Authority?

Blind trust can be foolish.

Hefin,
Our current system is dual P2/350MHz on a SuperMicro P6DBS board, runs
great. We are using the intel pro/100, it also is great. We run a
distributed Oracle database and not a lick of problems. Averaging over
10GB/wk between the servers without a problem.
 The local
university has 6 linux servers, including a full feed news server, all
using the intel card on dual
pentium/233s and have not had one problem. Very stable.
Good luck,
Daniel

I didn't see your original posting. (My news server expires really
fast.)  Can you elaborate again?

I'm using AlphaServer 400/233 with onboard tulip. I installed Red Hat
5.2.  Doesn't seem to have a problem.
