Dunno. The official diald release doesn't come with any RPM stuff,
spec file or RedHat init scripts. Why? Because RedHat have appear
to have never bothered to contribute them back. If you *need*
drop in RedHat compatibility you'll have to go to RedHat. If you
are willing to try it yourself go to http://diald.unix.ch.

Subject: Modem problem vith V.90
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 11:00:45 GMT
My ISP recently updated their modem pools to V.90, so I decided to do the
same to my modem (I have an USR Sportster Flash). However, when I try to
call the ISP I can not log in. The modem connects fine at a start, with the
exception that the connection phase (with all the noise) is almost double in
time, with a couple of "plong" (yes, it sounds like that!) in the middle.
After the modem connects, nothing happens until I get a "NO CARRIER" around
8-10 seconds later. After some mailing back and forth with the ISP and 3com,
it turns out that for Windows I need to install a new driver. And now to my
question: Does there exist a patch or something for either the kernel (I
have 2.2) or pppd that handles V.90?
Many thanks in advance!
/ Joachim

I have heard that gated will not work well with kernel version 2.2.x
I have the latest version of gated installed, and am considering an
upgrade to 2.2.3, but I have heard from a few people that gated and 2.2.x
do not like each other.
Also, I have heard that 2.2.x does not like the DEC Tulip network cards.
Have any of you heard anything on these?

You can set up a hierarchy of queuing disciplines and packet
classifiers using "tc" (ftp://ftp.inr.ac.ru/ip-routing/) but,
be warned, there is little documentation. You can, of course,
only adjust the order of *outgoing* packets. Incoming packets
arrive in whatever order the other end sent them and that end
may not be under your control (although there have been experiments
fudging about with acks and the like to try and cause the sender
to throttle back).

Before today I was running kernel 2.2.2, and I was having all those

This morning I compiled and booted version 2.0.35 with _exactly_ the

stable as it should be (or maybe I'm just dumber than I should be).
Anyway, thanks to all who lent a hand.

Hi,
I need help in installing the PPP dial-up. I tried to setup PPP dial-up
through XWindow, but it seems that I cannot connect, although the line
to the ISP isn't busy.
I configured the modem ok, and can dial to the ISP, the modem ring ok I
can hear the tone and the ISP server receive connection, but no
connection is established. I don't know which part isn't right. I got
the hostname, the domain, DNS server, phone number. Which part is still
wrong.
Actually, I'm not that good with Linux or PC...I got the XWindow install
because I am using redhat 5.1 (installation set the XWindow for me)...I
try reading the documentation, but became worse, I don't understand a
thing. Tension...
Huh, hope somebody can help to clear the things up to me. Thanks.

You didn't search, did you? You're looking for a dhcp deamon. So look for
dhcpd, and you'll find it.

You should identify the program that contacts the name server during
boot.
A good guess could be sendmail.
Try eliminating all the daemons you don't need. Or find out what
address they are looking up and code it into /etc/hosts
Do you have another machine on the network running Linux? You could
try having tcpdump running on this while you boot the other box to see
which package triggers the dial.
I think that /etc/resolv.conf is read every time a program requests a
name lookup, so you could replace it with an empty file in the beginning
of
the boot sequence and insert the correct at the very last step of
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d

Hello!
I have been dinking with PPP, and have RedHat 5.2 on a laptop that dials
into a PPP server just fine. My next step is getting one of my RedHat 5.2
boxes set up to answer incoming PPP calls. I've dropped 3 modems in it, and
set up a rollover group (on the 3 lines) to handle the calls coming in.
I thought I remembered that someone said to use MGETTY to handle my
incoming calls. The incoming calls will be from Win '9x machines, and using
PAP, I guess (isn't that the default).
1) Where should I get MGETTY from?
2) Is it the 'best' program for what I need? By best, I mean easy to use
and stable. This machine isn't going to get a lot of calls, just one or 2 a
night. I don't need any bloatware that does accounting, etc.
3) Are there any e-articles that compare softwares of this sort?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Spend $60 on a decent, fully supported NIC, such as a 3Com 3c509B (ISA) or 3c905B

Hi,
I have just upgraded from RH 5.1 to RH 5.2, we are using redhat for an
intranet server (apache, samba) on a LAN. The problem is this: making a
connection to the server is very erratic, samba often cannot access it and
nor can netscape / ie. The link can be activated by 'ping'ing out to
another machine on the network - then we have access as normal. The link
appears to then timeout and cannot be reached, until another ping. The same
network card was used on our last server so I think it must be a simple
configuration problem on the server - although the same problem did not
occur on 5.1.
What do I need to alter?
Any help greatly appreciated

Subject: ppp and ethernet
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 14:11:51 GMT
I am installing Red hat linux 5.2 on Intel-based PC. The PC has a 3C509
ethernet card and is also connected to a modem through com2. On boot up,
linux will configure the eth0 with IP address of 192.168.1.1. However, when I
try to start up pppd, it will give the following error message in
/var/log/message :
pppd[742]: pppd 2.3.3 started by root, uid 0
pppd[742]: tcgetattr: Input/output error(5)
kernel: registered device ppp0
If I deactivate the ethernet card and startup pppd, then it will dialup to my
ISP and everything is fine.
After the pppd is activated, if I try to start up the eth0, it will say
Resource temporarily unavailable.
Does anyone has any idea what is configured wrongly? Your help is greatly
appreciated.Thank you.
