Help,
I installed samba 2.0.1 on a SuSE Linux 6.0 system and configured it using
swat. Everything seems to work fine - I just can't print from an NT
client!?
Samba sees all the configured printers (reads the printcap) and when
I install the appropriate device driver under NT, Windows sees all the
printers too. I setup NT to use the raw-printer but when trying to print
to it, I keep getting error messages saying the printer name is wrong
or unavailable.
I can use the home directories just fine...
Anybody got an idea?
Thanks!

   Olli.

Thomas,

Did you setup your linux machine to be the default gateway in your winbox?

Im kinda new to this too. I have gotten my linux (redhat 5.2) to be able
to ping my win95 box
and vise versa. But, Thats as far as Iam now. Lets see, another place to
check is netcfg in linux box. Make sure you added the win98 box in there.

Let me know how you come along. BTW -- Got one maybe you might answer
concerning Netscape. When I try and send a message I get the error :
"error sending message. Qouted text is larger than reply".

No Ramon, you are wrong.
Read the RFC1631

"Each NAT box has a table consisting of pairs of local IP addresses and
globally unique addresses."

So we have _pairs_ of addresses, which makes it possible for a many to many
address routing.
IP-Masquerading as it is implemented in Linux is a many (intern local IPs)
to _one_ (ISPs-IP) translation.
And if you are wondering what would NAT be good for, again read the RFC.

If you had read Net3-Howto, the you would know that NAT for Linux is under
development.
So the original answer was totally right.

Hello,

Have been having this problem since I started using Linux, but haven't
gotten it resolved. My rev of Samba was the Red Hat distribution SMB version
1.9.18. DNS and Wins seems to work, as the Linux machine is set as a client
for both , and can ping and smbclient can view shares and send Winpopup
messages fine. The problem is when I try to use the Linux shares from NT. I
keep getting the message "Remote computer is not available" from NT 4
workstation. I set the password level to encrytped in the smb.conf file, and
used a smbpasswd file, made from the command mksmbpasswd.sh >
/etc/smbpasswd, and believe my smb.conf file is set up OK, but still no go.
Any ideas? Should I upgrade the version of samba?

You should upgrade to samba 2.0, the smbmount utilities are in SAMBA while
it used to be in the smbfs utils.

you should uninstall the smbfs utils then upgrade to SAMBA 2.x

and then you could use something like

smbmount //server/share -c 'mount /mnt/share'

it's different from the old smbfs but it works.

You don't say how you're connecting these machines - if they are using
10Base-T (twisted pair) then you can't just use a straight cable to
interconnect. Either buy a crossover cable or, better yet, (if you ever
want to add a third machine) buy an inexpensive 5-port hub somewhere.

I've installed Satan 1.1.1 on a redhat 5.2 distribution, and I receive the
following error when I run the 'make linux' at the end of the install.

The LINUX rules are untested and may be wrong
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/satan-1.1.1'
cd src/misc; make "LIBS=" "XFLAGS=-I/usr/local/satan-1.1.1/include -

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/satan-1.1.1'

I looked for an 'md5.o file in the satan-1.1.1/src/misc
directory and there isn't one there, nor was one included in the satan tar
file that I used 'satan-1_1_1_linux.fixed2.tar.tgz' that I used for the
install.

Anyone have any idea's? Be kind here.... or I'll have to go back to
sending MORE money to Billy G.

The probable reason for this is a bogus entry in /etc.sysconfig/network.
Red Hats install scripts are broken and if you specify no default route
(the correct answer 99% of the time BTW) it puts an entry of 0.0.0.0 in
there. Just remove the 0.0.0.0 and you should be fine. This really doesn't
affect anything in an adverse manner though.

I did manage to get this working. This is what I did:

1. Copied vnc programs into /usr/bin (I think it was that directory. Anyways,
one that is in your path)
2. Telnetted into the Linux box from Win95
3. Ran 'vncserver'
4. The first time you run it, it asks for a password
5. Then it gives a name and session # to connect to (ex: linux.domain.com:1)
6. Then, I ran vncviewer from Win95, and instead of typing the word address, I
typed the numberic IP address : (ex:192.168.1.3:1)
7. It gave me an xterm. Doing a 'ps aux' showed a 'xdm' running.

This worked for me. I didn't start any X programs on the Linux box. I hope this
helps.

I'm using a RedHat 5.2 on a machine with two network adapter which is used a
gateway/proxy for my internal network.

One ethernet adapter is used to connect my internal networks and the other
one it's connected to a cisco and from here to my ISP.

Since the lesed line sometimes it's not enough, I bought an ISDN Router to
use 8Kb/sec more during peak hours... What I'd like to do it's to choose at
runtime which subnets should use the ISDN router and which subnets should
use the cisco.

Since ipfwadm isn't the solution (you cannot forward the packets through a
gateway) I was thinking about use the route command to modify the routing
table on the machine. But this is not enough since the rules in the routing
table recognize only the target address and not the source (I'd like to
change the route only for some subnets).

So, does anyone know how to use two different "default route" choosed by
looking at the IP address source ?

Thanks in advance for your answer and please answer in mail too, by removing

So far, I have this script:

This produces a /tmp/pppscript.txt file that has 2 lines in it

/tmp/pppscript.txt file is created, but the ipchain is not, and I haven't

Very wise idea.

This would be enough, though putting in more RAM is not expensive nowadays
and would things speed up.

No problem with IP-Masquerading.

For hosting other sites there are several things to consider:
You need two DNS-Servers
You have to consider security (Firewall)
hardware might be to "small"

I don't know what is "better". But I (newbie) used SuSE 6.0 for setting up a
similar Server (except i'm dialing up with ISDN). SuSE comes with 5CDs
(including StarOffice), 500+ pages installation & getting started guide,
tons of packages and sources. It uses Redhat's RPM so upgrading is easy.
Installation is done with YaST (Yet another setup tool), which makes it easy
for getting started quickly.
Kernel is configured for masquerading, firewall ... So for the beginning
there is not need to compile a Kernel.
As I'm writing this SuSE 6.2 with kernel 2.2.x should be out soon.

No, just turn off unwanted stuff in a menu and make ...
