The IBM ISA 4/16 and MCA TR cards are supported. Unfortunately you have
one which isn't. I have a drawer full of cards which don't work,
although I'm told Madge now has a Linux driver.

Hi Chris,

Unfortunatelly, I'm having the same trouble. I get an error during the make
thatit can't find the socks.h file. I've search for that file, and it
doesn't exist on my system. I think we are both missing a library somewhere,
but I'm to much of a newbie to figure it out. If I find a solution, I'll
forward it on to you. I would appreciate it if you would forward any
solutions you find as well.

Thanks,

Matthew

Sure, if U log on with telnet, you are working on one of the consoles
"ttypx"
where x is a number from 0 to f. If all ttys are in use, the next
console will
be ttyq0, till ttyzf.

The file /etc/securetty contains a list with consoles where the root
user can
login. So just add a few of the ttypx consoles to this file.

Good luck,

1.) Your Linux machine won't show up in Network Neighborhood unless you have
Samba running. http://www.samba.org

2.) nslookup gets information from an Internet domain name server. If this is
strictly a home network, you won't need it.

General help: Do things in small increments...don't try to tackle the whole job
at once. First, connect your computers peer-to-peer or using a hub, or whatever
your networking setup is. Use ifconfig to configure your network interface [man
ifconfig]. Use route to setup the route between the two computers on the
Linux end [man route]. Now, try to ping your Linux machine from your 98
machine. If you have set it up correctly, you will get a response. Now you
have connectivity. The rest I will leave up to you. Read the network-related
howtos at http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/
Good luck, and don't forget to have fun ;)

sounds like you performed a magic trick. you turned you perfectly
good modem into a winmodem wanabe. that's righ, soft v.90. the flash
to the modem only told the modem what to do with the new at command
but the modem still doesn't know the full v.90 protocal only enought
to compleat the connection phase. I doesn't know what to do next.
thats where the windos driver kicks in. I have see such external
modems and had some fun. when a connection over 28.8 is established,
the recieve light comes on and stays there. this dumps the raw data
into the serial port for the driver the handel the connection but only
after the driver tells the modem that there is a carrier.
bum deal for you man

I remember that same stuff happening when 14.4 v.42bis first came out.
was a soft driver.

No you don't need another card, you can add the following to your
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file:

# add aliased IP
/sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 207.250.91.49
/sbin/route add -host 207.250.91.49 dev eth0:0

: "the link is not 8 bit clean, bit 7 always set to ZERO"

One of the most (in)famous ppp faqs. It almost always means that
the server-side has not started ppp but is instead at a text prompt,
e.g. login prompt or menu. The chat script is not supplying the correct
responses to cause pppd to start and is reflecting the client-side pppd
LCP negotiation requests with the 8-th bit stripped.

One common cause is a client-side that uses an expect/send of <CONNECT ''>
instead of <CONNECT '\d\c'>. The first form sends an extra carriage return
that can throw the server-side off, particularly with a scripted login
rather than, say, PAP authentication.

Use the `-v' chat flag and look at the server-side /var/log/messages
for clues, comparing what you want the chat script to do to connect with
what actually happened according to the log.

There's also a whole section on "not 8-bit clean" in the PPP-HOWTO.

Subject: Samba Questions??
Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 21:50:19 -0800

Hi,

I recently started testing Samba and from my prelimary evaulation I just
love this service. But after reading all of smb.conf manpage. I still get
these strange errors. I'm not sure what these problems are. Below, I've
listed some issues that I'm having. If somebody can help, I would really
appreciate it. Here's the questions:

1) Is it true that the 'create mask' service does NOT accept most absolute
values? And is it true, that 'chmod' and 'create mask' only works for EXT2
filesystems.

2) Using 'smbclient -L computername', I get this:

load_client_codepage: filename /etc/codepages/codepages.850 does not exist.

start lmhosts: Can't open lmhosts file /etc/lmhost.

Question: What is codepage? And what does /etc/lmhost do and do I really
need these files?

3) When stoping SMB using 'smb stop', I get this:

Shutting down SMB services. smbd grep:2233: No such file or directory
nmbd.

Question: I know that nmbd is the NETBIOS name service. But I don't
exactly know why this error keeps coming up?

4) Login to a Samba server via Win95, a dialog box sometimes comes up (in
Win95). It looks something like this:

Resource \\computername\IPC$
Password

Question: Why does this sometimes come up and what is IPC$? Is IPC$ the
Samba server?

5) Using 'usermod -e 03/24/99 username', I get this:

usermod shadow passwords required for -e and -f

Question: I know -e and -f stands for expire and inactive, respectively.
But what is shadow password?

Well, those are the questions that I having trouble answering. If anybody
can help, that'll be great.

Thanks,
Vincent

Yeah, it could be becuse your modem is internally set at xon/xoff
software flow control and the ppp connection is trying to use hardware.
try issuing the xonxoff switch in your chat script or set your modem to
software flow control.

I had a similar problem where the Samba server would not appear in
Network Neighborhood. My problem was that I have set the "os level" to 0
at some point in the past and forgot about it. You may want to check
that particular settings.

Good luck,
