Feh. Why do *I* care whether a Winmodem will work under Linux?

Return it for a refund and get a real modem. *That* USR will pay attention
to.

Subject: remote x server problems
Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 01:11:55 -0700

Hi, I finally set up Exceed 6.0 on WinNT to run with my RH 5.1 system. I
have KDE set up and I'm playing with different themes. It seems that
whenever I go to the display properties panel, it goes REALLLLLLLYYYY
slowly, and it seems to depend on the size of the bitmap background. What
worries me is that I have a 100base-t point to point connection under my
desk, so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem, even for large images. Also, why
is the display panel sending so much data across the network, if at all?
Also, when I try to scale the background image (as opposed to tiled or
centered) it takes forever. I'm running a P-166 with 128MB on the linux
end, and a dual P-pro 200 with 64MB on the NT end, so speed/memory is not a
problem. This speed problem also happened with another x server I
downloaded.

Secondly, with the Exceed, the control panel at the bottom of the screen
comes on the for the first few seconds and then disappears entirely. when I
resurrect it with kpanel from an xterm, it dies out again. This did not
happen with the previous x server (before exceed).

thanks for any input
m.s.

Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 20:42:26 -0700

Hi All,
        Running RedHat 5.2 kernel 2.0.36
Had some trouble compiling diald so I'm attempting to get pppd demand
dialing for my home network.

I downloaded the source upgrade, patched the source, built the pppd
stuff, recomiled the kernel. I am the proud owner of a demand dial
capable pppd.

I'm currently stuck on the proper pppd execution line.

My ppp0 dials fine from activating it via the Network Config in X so I
know that's right. But no luck on starting it for demand dial.

I would greatly appreciate some gentle nudging as to how to invoke pppd
to demand dial. Been around the man page, etc but have not found any
pseudo HOW-TOs or web pages to help explain this part of diald.
TIA,
Bob

This is a stand alone network,
It has 4 computers
 H1[1]-> Router[3] -> Router[3] -> H2[1]
[x]= # of network cards on it.

So how should I give teh addresses to them.
It didn't ping and says

#traceroute 10.1.1.2
1.10.1.1.1 0.253ms !H 0.148ms 0.118ms !H
I tried teh same command on the host too but teh same result with
with IP address different.
Please help me.

there is the known issue about telnet and root ( not possible under normal

otherwise i suggest you look into /var/log for any messages, warnings etc that
were added just when you tried the access.
most of the time you find more details there

just to add my 2pc worth of experience,
i used cheap noname ne2000-compatibles for quite a while now,

True, and no gettys should use the cua device either. Use the ttySx device.

Someone informed me that if you use uugetty you run uugetty on the ttySx
device and use the cuax device for uucp and other dial-out programs.
With the upcomming release the cuax device is going to disapear, so you
probably get problems making uugetty work.

Hi,

I am working to install a red hat 5.2 linux box in a "full windows"

computer name is not mapped to its ip address in wins: I can access
linux box only with its ip address but not with its name...
If I put, by hand, name and ip address in wins, it works fine but my
network admin doesn't want to make a static map in wins saying it should
be automated...

I am sure this has been resolved by someone, please help... What do I
have to do in linux conf ?

If I want to use Samba, must I have my name problem resolved before or
can I use Samba with ip adresses ?

Thanks

First you create a kernel with firewalling and masquerading.
Add then install Squid as a caching proxy. This is the best solution we
run it in our company without any problems

Subject: PPP Connection w/ null modem?

Hi -

Disclaimer: Massive Newbie, limited time in the evenings.

The situation is this:

I have a laptop & T1 line at work, and a desktop & 56k modem at home.
Both computers have Linux on them. I bring the laptop home occasionally
and would like to use a serial null modem cable to swap files loaded
onto the laptop. The laptop does not have an ethernet connection
independent of the dock at work, so that isn't an option.

The current goal: Connect the laptop and desktop in the simplest way
possible to tranfer (largish) files.

Alternative 1: Set up PPP connection with each computer having a
separate IP address, etc. I haven't seen this discussed anywhere in
connection w/ the null modem cable, including the LDP. Any thoughts?

Alternative 2: Just open up the serial port and use the equivalent of 2
terminal programs (1 each) to move files back and forth. I haven't seen
this discussed either in connection w/ the null modem cable.

Thoughts?

Answers cc'd by email would be appreciated as well as to the group.

Thx,

Thanks for your reply. I configured Apache to listen to 23.24.25.26:80 as
well as 192.168.0.2:80. I still cannot bring up my web page by typing my net
ip into a browser.

In addition to using Listen 23.24.25.26, I configured my router first with:

ipchains -A input -p tcp -s 23.24.25.26 80 -j REDIRECT -d 192.168.0.2 80
This didn't work, so I tried an

ipchains -A forward -p tcp -s 0/0 80 -j MASQ -d 192.168.0.2 80
Which didn't work either.

Not sure if I'm barking up the right tree here ...

I installed Samba 2.0 and now I can't ftp to my Linux box from either 98

Other than that everything seems to be working just fine.

Can someone please help?

Thanks in advance
