Hi Ahmed,
there are two things to consider:

Are you using the right IRQ? Look up cat /proc/interrupts and
setserial -g /dev/ttyS* and make sure that the modem's IRQ is
not used by anything else.

Are you using the right INIT string? Look up the connection speed
reported after you connect (like CARRIER 26400); is it the one you
expect?
If you modem does not report the connection speed (or says something
like CONNECT 115200 only), try to append S95=44 to the INIT string
and I hope you will see CARRIER XXXX, CONNECT 115200.

Cheese,
Andrew

I don't want to start a flame-war here, but what with the number of bugs
NT has, and its sheer complexity, I think Linux would be a better choice.
The last argument is *quite* arguable, and in my experience, neither of
them are true. No one in any walk of life could have ther lives improved
by NT, and you can quote me on that. Ever noticed the demand for people
like yourself? That's because administrating NT is a *big* job, and more
of a headache than any other system. Around here, I think, we tend to
refrain from giving advice like this.

If you have a Dynamic IP, and want to host a Web, FTP or other Internet Server,
you can get a Dynamic DNS solution from someone like TZO.COM

http://www.tzo.com offers a static domain name for a dynamic IP. We have Linux
scripts, as well as Windows, Mac a java client software that sends your Dynamic
IP to our DDNS servers each time the IP changes.

Our software was rated 5 stars by Linuxberg and can also be found on
Freshmeat.net. For more information, you can see http://www.tzo.com or
http://www.dynamicdns.org

A typical TZO Subdomain costs about $25 per year, or $60 per year for a Private
domain name attached to a Dynamic (or Static) IP address.

Hi Pat,
I think that route is setup twice, first by the routine that sets up the
device and
second time by routed, if you have the route defined in /etc/route.conf.
But I think, that it's only cosmetic, because it should be no problem.

Try to change the order of your PCI cards in your system and check your
BIOS messages if some PCI cards share an interupt (and try to disable
this).

Yes, ther eare some bugs, but Microsoft is working hardly on it and thanks
to teh new Security Site Microsof topened recently we now have an extremely
fast reaction of M support personnel. So, if you have SP4 with the latest
hotfixes you hav enothing to worry about secutiry and bugs. Remember that
all NT bugs are nothing comparing to Linux complexity .

Should I be using dhcpcd-0.70? I'm running slackware with the 2.0.36
kernel and dhcpcd-1.3.17. It doesn't work giving the error:

 dhcpStart: socket: Invalid argument.

The docs say the kernel should be compiled with SOCK_PACKET. I can't
find any option for SOCK_PACKET anywhere. If dhcpcd-1.3.17 is only for
later kernels, where do I find dhcpcd-0.70? The site I got the other
version from didn't have it. Once I get it working I can play with
upgrading my kernel and such.

Did you ever get it working? I haven't seen a reply to email I sent the

Subject: Upgrade to 2.2.0 broke PPP dialup
Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 19:01:08 +0100

Hello all.

Recently I upgraded my kernel to 2.2.0, nicely provided on a magazine
coverdisk (PC Plus). I upgraded all the files mentioned in the relavent
file in the Documentation/ directory. So now I have pppd 2.3.5, and its
accompanied PPP code in the kernel.

The trouble is, somewhere along the road, the PPP connection stopped
working. Here's a chunk out of the error log which accompanied the
failure. I haven't snipped, since I know not what's relevant to the
problem - that's the problem.

I hope it's properly formatted - I think I've forced netscape into being
rational...

Subject: Can't ping Windows 95 from Redhat Linux 5.2
Date: 28 Mar 1999 19:31:57 GMT

Hi,

I am a newbies in Linux world. Recently, I have set up a home network
that only connect a Linux machine to a Windows 95 client. The machine that
have Linux installed can also dual-boot to Windows 95.

When I boot both machines in Windows 95, they can ping each other with
no problem. However, while I boot one in Linux and one in 95, they can't
ping each other. In Windows 95, ping keeps giving messages "request time
out". In Redhat Linux, ping command has no response. Would you know what the
reason is?

I have already checked the TCP/IP settings and they are correct.

Windows 95 box - IP: 192.168.1.2
                Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Linux box - IP: 192.168.1.1
          Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

I also have checked the /etc/hosts in Linux and file HOSTS in Windows
directory. They are both identical. I have added LMHOSTS in Windows already.

I have added the route command - 'route add -net 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
eth0" in Linux box.

I have tried to ping the IP on their own and have no problem.

Would you help me to resolve this problem? I have tried many times and the
result is rather frustrating.

Thanks.

Regards,
Rory Chan.
