I don't understand how not having a default route to the LAN on the Linux
box can keep the MS machines from getting to the internet. I'd think
you would only need to have a network specific route to the LAN on the
Linux box (assuming a LAN of only one subnet) and perhaps set the Linux
box as the default gateway for each of the MS boxes. But then I don't
have much to do with MS products anymore.
If you insist on keeping the Linux default route you could put
/sbin/route add default ppp0
in /etc/ppp/ip-up (and remove the pppd defaultroute option). This will
make ppp0 interface the default route during the ppp connection and when
ppp0 is torn down at the end of the connection the eth0 default route
will reassert itself automatically.
I'd recommend that you at least try keeping the pppd defaultroute option,
use a network specific route to the LAN, and remove the existing default
route. That's really the way to do it for a LAN with one subnet. Take a
look at the NAG for examples and enlighenment about networking in general.
The files for routing are usually one of the boot-up /etc/rc.* files -
it's called rc.inet1 here.

Huh??? That won't stop broken connections from happening.
The ftp client here has a "reget" command to continue ftp downloads at
the point where the connection failed. Try "man ftp" to see whether
yours does.

I couldn't find IP tunneling in my HOWTOs or MINIs but I did on the Web. It
looks like it is talking about VPN and PPTP. That is what I am doing
ultimately but my problem right know is forwarding a port. I want to setup
a VPN on my NT server at home going through my Linux IP masquerading gateway

server. I need a way to get the Linux box to forward the request for the
port to my NT server.
I would think that this could be done but I can't figure it out.
Thanks for the help,

Hi,
This is another very grateful newbie who wants to thank the many people that
have posted and sent responses about my modem problem. I can now dial out
to my isp through Minicom and it appears to work well. the solution wsa to
reset the jumperson my USRobotics3.6 modem to COM 2 and IRQ 3.and rerun
Modem tool and then netcfg.
Now the econd reason for my new post. I can dial in to my Isp but it would
be kind of nice to be able to browe the web and use e-mail. Ok I kow this
sounds dum but the only application that i am aware of that has these
functions is netscape. It is installed on my system but i cannot get it to
access any thing.
When i entera url into the location area all i get returned is an error
message that home.netscape.co cannnot be locted, it does not have a DNS
entered. I also cannot get it to accept my user name, POP or SMTP server.
from my previous post i am aware that i must be on line and i am connected
to my ISP via netcfg when this info is entered. again i get a error message
that staest the server (mail.the-den.com) is not erecognized.
if i am doing something wrong can someone help or if there is a different
browser available for LINUX xould some one please tell me the name of
it???????
again i want to thnk you all for your help and aplologize for fulling up
thegroups with the my questions. I am just so close now I am excited and
want to be able to use my Linux system to its full potential (for me).

If it's on a MS machine it probably needs to loose the .sam extension
to be recognised also. That's the case with NT so I assume 98 is similar.

I'm trying to phase out an NT fileserver/PDC in an organisation of
<100 users with a couple of routed subnets. All users have Unix and
NT accounts and most are using NT workstation clients. I'm currently
using Intel/SPARC Linux 2.2.5 and Samba 2.0.3.
How do I set up Samba on the subnets to get NT login authentication
via the PDC on the main net (ie. NT4 WS reports no PDC)? I have
slave NIS servers on some subnets and would much prefer if the NT/W95
users could authenticate locally via the NIS database.
Is the NT PDC always the WINS server? How do I distribute browse
lists to/from clients on the subnets using Samba.
Is there a way to make the Samba printers available to NT workstation
clients in the same way they are shared from NT server where drivers
are available to clients without requiring administrator (or Power
User?) privilege to install them on each client?
Thanks,

Subject: samba not working
I have samba 1.9.18p10 installed on my Linux Box
running with SuSE 6.0, which I use as a gateway to the internet
and file server.
When I restarted the server today samba just wouldn't work anymore.
when I do "sbin/init.d/smb status" I get this funny msg:
"no process ./smb: checkprog: command not found"
When I just do "/usr/bin/smbstatus" it tells me I have no
Samba services running.
I know for a fact my smb.conf is totally OK and it has two services
[homes] and [public].
Why is Samba not working anymore?
Thanks in advance for any answers...

download qmail and follow the INSTALL instructions step by step
installation (after downloaded) only takes about 30 minuts. most of
it you can use gpm (you mouse) to copy/past the commands right out of
the INSTALL.* files. (hint, for easy installation use procmail instead
of qmails delivery agent...not as secure but easier to get working,
and redhats (5.x versions) tcp wrapers have a bug that won't allow you
to specify relay clients as described in /var/qmail/doc/FAQ section 5.
I downloaded slakwares version to correct the problem.

It may not support it, but I smbmount shares from both the other Win95

smbmount is from my previous installation of Samba (1.9.7 something).

I have AT and PCI cases of this network card, the AT used under Linux
and the PCI under NT & Linux. I use the "ne" driver for the AT and the
"ne2k-pci" for the PCI card. If you have PCI, set the BIOS to sense PCI
cards and it should autoprobe in Linux without specifying io & irq.

Did you do a 'man setserial'? If you're changing the irq, the syntax
would be 'setserial /dev/modem irq new_irq', where /dev/modem is your
modem device and new_irq is the irq you want it to use.
