I would suggest posting to 'comp.protocols.smb' as this is the newsgoup
that most of us monitor for Samba info. KAS

Look at Speed.txt and Speed2.txt in /usr/doc/packages/samba
You say you have the newest versions of the kernel and of samba, SuSE 6.1 comes
with 2.2.5 and 2.0.3 respectively. The current levels are 2.2.10 and 2.0.4b. The
only problem I know about with the SuSE levels is that smbmount does not work.

Thanks for all the replies everybody. Now that I know it's possible to do,
I'm going to get started. I don't have too much experience in Linux.
However, I'm intent on learning to use Linux, and I know I can do this
project. I bought Redhat 5.1 about a year ago, installed it on my PC along
with other Linux apps, but soon ran out of things to do with Linux and I
eventually stopped using it.
Now that I'll be getting an ADSL line, I can learn much more about Linux by
putting together this server. :)
Thanks again everybody. Hope you had a great 4th of July!

Subject: Room temperature question for home network.
Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1999 23:42:05 -0700
Hi everybody,
I have a Windows peer to peer home network, and will soon have a Linux
Internet gateway server. I have a problem with my home network. The
problem is that I don't have air conditioning in my house, and it's summer
time right now. In the day time, it gets really warm in my computer room,
and sometimes the PCs act abnormally. I have to shut them down every once
in a while, and restart them to get them working again. (I presume because
of the heat). By the way, I have to keep the PCs turned on - because one of
the PCs is our answering machine.
So, my question is: What would be a good room temperature for my computer
room. And, what alternatives are there to keeping the room cool, besides an
air conditioner. Air conditioning can get expensive, and even if I get one,
it would be a window unit. And I don't know if I can run a window A/C unit
all day (besides, that too can get expensive). I've got an extra fan in
each PCs case, but I still worry about the warm room temperature. What
else can I do to keep my room cool? Do ceilings fans work? Maybe a block
of ice and an oscillating fan? :)
Please help, my PCs need your help, they're dying from too much heat.
George

I forgot to mention, if it matters, below that I have already configured
smbmount on the linux machine to have access to the NT's files. Also, IP
Masquerading is installed and works for the network machines to gain
access to the internet through the linux box.

I'll try this but why would I need NetBEUI if I'm already using
TCP/IP?
I've already got file and print sharing on but I thought the file and
print sharing was to do with the local computer letting remote
computers use it's drives rather than trying to find files/printers on
a remote computer. As I can already see the Windows files from Linux,
this part is working fine. It's the Windows machine seeing the Linux
one I'm having problems with.

I recommend that you connect to your Linux box via any 'common, everyday'
username (NO special priviledges) and they type 'su -' (don't forget the
dash in the command) which will allow you to log in as THE superuser.
Then you can do anything that you want. If you are worried about
security, look into running 'ssh' (secure shell) which will encrypt all
your keystrokes so that no one can 'tap' the line and find out what your
user name and passwords are. KAS

It would be better to impliment encrypted passwords on the Samba/Linux. You
would not have to worry about modifying your MS systems and having security
holes show up. KAS

I suppose I ought to start a thread of my own on comp.protocols.smb
but I've spotted a couple of threads on linux.samba that seem to fit
the specific problem I have.
There's also a few other linux. sites that interest me that don't seem
to have an equivalent anywhere else on usenet. For instance there's a
linux.postgres newsgroup where I have a similar problem with posting.
Where else could I go for help with Postgres?

Subject: Re: IP Masquerading problem
Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1999 00:02:49 -0500
I am having the exact same problem (with buy.com, hotmail.com, aol.com), but
I do not believe it is a problem with IP masq. If you try to ping these
servers from your linux box or any computer using your ISP you will probably
get no response. From what I have been told, It appears that somewhere
between us and these servers ICMP has been disabled or blocked. This
prevents our computers and these servers from properly doing mtu discovery
(not sure exactly what this is yet). The mtu (max transmission unit), I
believe, sets the packet size that particular interface uses.
I did find a work around. You must set the mtu on all client computers
(don't modify you IP masq server) from which you want to access these sites
to 296. In linux do 'ifconfig eth0 mtu 296' and in Win95-98 modify this
registry key so its value is 296:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0000\Max
MTU
The problem with this is that the mtu of a ethernet connection is normally
1500 and reducing it to 296 can have a negative effect on network
performance. The sites work on your modem, because the default ppp mtu is
296.
I have been unable so find any other solution. I have contacted my ISP and
they say its not their fault.
Hope this helps,
Lucas
