I've been hacking away at this for several days now. I set up ttyS1 with
getty as my modem. I can access the modem and even dial out on it sometimes
but it does not want to answer when a call is incoming. It's a USR 56K v.90
on a Pentium system running RedHat 5.2 and kernel 2.2.0. I've read through
all the howto's and troubleshooting tips but have yet to find an answer. If
anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Chris

I wish that that were the problem. The directory can be read access enable
for all users and there is an index.html file. In the access.conf file I
basically copied the entry for /home/httpd/html/ and changed the directory
to /home/*/public_html/ Is there something I am missing?

Subject: Radius Problem. Getting rid of the capital P
Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 22:34:36 -0700
Rebuilding a main server for the isp we run. The way the radius server is
setup now is that users are REQUIRED to put a capital P in front of their
username to logon, looking to migrate off of that capital P to a P-less
society. Problem lies in that we need to be able to authenticate both users
with the capital P and without it, (saves the daunting task of informing
3000 people of the change, email doesnt cut it because some of the users
dont even check their email). Need to get in touch with someone who has ran
into this similar problem, and has come up with a solution for it.
The isp was originally hopping off of a server that used slackware, their
radius was setup so that users had to use the capital P. The new server is
going to be a debian 2.1 system, running radius 2.0.
ANY informaiton would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: multihomed machine + different services for each address
Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 23:29:58 -0400
I have a host on the Internet with 1 static IP. I plan on offering web
space/services for a few local companys/organizations. I also plan on
getting more static IP's for each.
ie. "my.original.org" has address 000.000.000.000.
"www.company1.com" will have address 111.111.111.111
"www.company2.com" will have address 222.222.222.222
All address's will actually be the same machine.
I understand how to setup Apache to serve several different webpages/domains.
But what should I be reading about to prevent other services; such as
telnet, anonymous FTP, ping ....; being offered for "www.company1.com" and
"www.company2.com" yet still offer these services for "my.original.org" ?
Is this a function of the basic Linux configuration files such as
/etc/services, /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/hosts.allow..... or separate firewall
software ?
Thanks,

Date: 8 Apr 1999 22:15:05 GMT
I just received a dual-boot system from SW technology, with
Debian (slink) and Win98. I have a weird problem getting connected to my
LAN.
I cannot ping, let alone telnet or ftp out of the new box from
Linux. It works just fine from within Win98.
When linux is running, I can ping successfully to it from another
box.
I have tried about 4 different tulip drivers for this card. I
have access to another system with the same motherboard (Asus P2B) and
same ethernet card (Bay Networks/Netgear FA310, rev D1); when I swap the
card from the malingering system into the working system, the working
system *stays* working. Thus, while SW Technology (the vendor) is going
to send me another ethernet card, my guess is that it won't do any good.
One of the last strings that you see if you do a 'dmesg' is
that the transmitter stopped, and it is switching to half-duplex
operation. This message does not occur on the system that works.
There does not appear to be any IRQ conflict.
Anyone have any insight into this? I am mystified at this point.
Many thanks for any insights into this mystery!

Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 05:39:39 GMT
Hi all,
I hope someone can help us out. We just signed up for Ameritech's ISDN
service yesterday, and we have an Eicon DIVA T/A ISDN modem (version
2, Release 0). We are trying to set up a computer we're using as a
server (runing Linux RH 5.2) so that we can access the internet from
both of our computers (aka network :-) Now, we can connect to
Ameritech just fine through our regular modems, but for some reason we
get disconnected for no reason after successfully connecting. It
almost appears as though we're getting disconnected FROM their side,
but Ameritech knows nothing about Linux and offers no technical
support regarding this. (Besides, we really don't need to hear them
ask us, 'Are you sure you have your computer plugged in? Are you sure
you have this set right?' My husband is a network administrator, and
has set up servers using NT, Windows 95, and Unix, so neither of us
are dummies.)
I realize this is probably a longshot, but if someone with a similar
setup could help us...maybe send the dialup script that you've found
to work, it would be a great help. Once we get this working we will
certainly share the details so we can help someone else who might be
having the same type of problem.
Frantically,
Beth Orr

Subject: Service Location Protocol
Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 22:16:52 GMT
I'm trying to build a multi-task Linux router for my company's Netware 5.0
network running TCP/IP.
It's function will be to route TCP/IP packets over four distinct network
segments, DHCP serve those segments, and supply access to the Netware 5
server. Well, the first two work just fine, but it doesn't seem to provide
login access to the Netware 5 server. It looks to me like this is because
Linux isn't routing/forwarding the Service Location Protocol (SLP) ports that
Netware is now using (instead of IPX SAP). So bascially, I need to know if
it is possible to make Linux do this (RedHat 5.2) and if so, how? Is there
just some obscure command that I need to include in a config or the rc.local
that will enable the SLP forwarding (I think it's ports 1440/tcp & 1440/udp)?
Is there a daemon that I need to be using? Does this functionality even
exist at all?!?!
This project could really make inroads for Linux in our company if I can get
it to work and take some strain off of our Netware server.
(feel free to copy to my e-mail, it's at work)
Thank you,
Kirk Lawson

For what it's worth...
I just picked up a new machine and installed 2.2.5 and ran install all
sorts of odd problems. ifconfig would report all sorts of errors when
trying to talk over my tulip based ethernet card and I never could get
ppp to work. I switched to 2.0.36 and everything works like a champ.
It's possible I misconfigured something or missed at item in the 2.2.5
docs that I needed to tweak, but for now I'm sticking with 2.0.36.

smtp stream tcp nowait qmaild /usr/sbin/tcpd
/var/qmail/bin/tcp-env /var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd
Make sure the /var/qmail/control files are correct?

do you get something like?

Did you make sure it would allow for local relays?
in /etc/hosts.allow soemthing like:

That's quite easy:
Open /etc/inittab and change id:3:initdefault to id:5:initdefault.
That should work.

Both are running Samba 2.0 and have Windows NT 4 Clients.

Subject: Auto-dial multiple targets
I have a need to be able to auto-dial to at least two different ISPs at
the same time.
Can two copies of diald be run concurrently with different config files
so that any traffic to I.P.address.1 causes a dialout to phone number1
and any traffic to any other external IP address causes a dialout to
phone number2.
I would also need to run IP Masquerading on the second of the above
dialout lines. Does this complicate the above?
Cheers and thanks,
