in the most icq clients you can set the port by hand ,( done it before on
our school port 53 works perfect ( dns )

Hi,
I have a problem with either my ISP or my pppd config. I am using
default RH5.2 config (i.e. kernel 2.0.36) and the pppd that comes with.
The scripts all seem to work, i.e. I can dialup okay and stuff. After
about 3 hours of intense use, my connection falls over for apparently no
reason. examining /var/log/messages often reveals nothing, but
sometimes has this:
Apr 5 06:06:43 fantasy pppd[1763]: CCP terminated by peer
Apr 5 06:06:43 fantasy pppd[1763]: Compression disabled by peer.
Apr 5 06:06:43 fantasy pppd[1763]: LCP terminated by peer
Apr 5 06:06:46 fantasy pppd[1763]: Modem hangup
Does this mean that my ISP has terminated the connection? Has anyone
else had similar problems with Prodigy Internet? (who btw will often
tell you if you dial Support that it is impossible to connect to their
service using any UNIX).

Take a look in /etc/passwd. You can fix the home directory there with an
editor.

I don't think most daemons support this. 2 exceptions that I know of are
socks and named,
they will only respond on specified IPs. You probably could inspect the
code on these daemons
and modify the others you with to run to operate the same.
I'd probably just setup different systems if I were you, but I'm not.

is there a port of the squiclient (squid companion program) for Win32?
note that I do not want to run squid on a Win box (it is allready

this seems more serious than what I've heard about.
however with kernel 2.2 I've heard about other problems with the new "lockd"
locak daemon, that is moreover absent in kernel 2.0.
this apears when linux is nfs server.
but for linux nfs client I've heard that patches, solaris 2.6 or kernel 2.2 do help...
I'm a little frightened now...

Subject: Default route through virtual ip? (kernel 2.2.4)
Date: 9 Apr 1999 11:54:36 GMT
After updating from 2.0.36 to 2.2.4 we are no more able to configure
default route through virtual (alias) ip.
The significant part of the configuration:
route add -net x.y.z.128 netmask 255.255.255.192 eth0:0
route add default dw x.y.z.129
When I type route -n in 2.0.36 after the above commands
the interface for default route is eth0:0. In 2.2.4
the primary interface is used (eth0) instead.
Any ideas what might be wrong with our configuration?
Best regards

Yes!
In my newbie days (last week, actually) I encountered the same problem.
Your ISP doesn't understand that you want a PPP-connection. If you make
the same connection using minicom you'll probable see a wellcoming text
after you login.
In my case the solution was preceding my username with a P.
Go back to LinuxConf and change your username to e.g. Prcga.
I found this solution somewere in Dejanews, not unknown to you, me
thinks... Look there for more options, if your problem persists.
Success!

All clients fail, all at the same place. I suspect PPP is the problem, but

I'm not sure. I use KPPP to connect, and I used EZPPP before that, and I
wouldn't even know where to start to configure PPP (other than the cryptic
HOWTO which I couldn't make heads or tails of.) I'm a newbie, so I'm trying

Done. No difference. 30 miles far enough from the original spot? :-)

Definitely. They all download without problems via Windows. If I installed
FAT32 support in my kernel, I suppose I could download them there and then
read them from Linux, but again, I'm trying to avoid doing things the hard
way. I *should* be able to download these files from Linux, thus I
*shouldn't* have to reboot into a despised OS to do so.

I'm trying to setup a home net with a RH 5.2 server and 3 win98 PCs. The
server will be a web/mail/news proxy and file/print server. My ISDN TA
(Adtran XRT) is hooked up to the server, connecting to Bellsouth.net (single,
64K channel). I've read the HOWTOs, etc., but cannot get most anything to
work, and I don't have alot of time to figure it out - working long hours :).
Does someone have this configuration, and if so, can you send me the settings
for DNS, PPP scripts, Samba, etc.?
Specifically: 1. I can't get caching DNS working correctly (I'm using
192.168.1.2 for server, 192.168.1.3-5 for win98). I can ping/telnet the
machines on the local net, but I can't get to anything outside when
connecting to Bellsouth. I think I've got win98 setup correctly. (Please
note: I'm running TCP/IP and NETBEUI on win98; I need NETBEUI to network a
scanner from one win98 machine to another). 2. How do I get the dialup screen
on Win98 to turn off when telnet'ing into Linux (some netbios problem or
setting?)? 3. I've got ppp dialup working on Linux with the Adtran TA, but
again, I can't ping anything beyond the ISP's server, even using IP address
instead of name. 4. I can't get Samba configured to mount win98 disks (win98
has sharing on for all disks). Is there a way to do this automatically? Note:
Samba is working to the point where I can see the win98 PCs, running
smbclient -L <host>.
Any help is appreciated...
