The only differences from my working setup and yours are:

GATEWAY=0.0.0.0
GATEWAYDEV=

in /etc/sysconfig/network

and for my /etc/ppp/options only:

lock

Have you tried to do nslookup or traceroute ?

Have you tried setting up your ppp connection via 'network configurator'?
That's what I use, and it works with no problems.

Nothing, it is standard unix file maintenance. These processes run
everynight and do rebuild various tables throught the night. It is
nothing to be alarmed by and quite normal on any unix environment.

Uh, James, that's "soothe", not "sooth". And it has nothing to do with
insecurities - it is an expression of contempt for what is arguably the
least stable and least capable of all OS choices for the Intel platform.
Always presuming that it can even be properly dignified by referring to
it as an OS, since it really isn't.

I call it TWMWDCV - "The World's Most Widely Distributed Computer Virus".
Da Virus for short. I keep it isolated on its own separate, hidden-unless
-invoked C: partition, so that it cannot indulge its penchant for mucking
about in the filesystems of its betters on seek-and-destroy missions.
I wake it up maybe once a week. If folks want to refer to it as "MS Windoze"
that's fine with me. I seriously doubt it has much of anything to do with
any of their possible insecurities.

Sounds like a nice work-around, and I also will use it. But why do
we need a work-around?
When I compiled my kernel, I excluded those as I knew they would not be
needed... so why
is Modprobe looking for them?????

Greetings,

I am trying to get the new version of Network Edition for DPC from
Helius running on my Linux (RedHat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36) system.

My DPC setup works fine when I reboot into Win98.

I think I am having routing problems, but am not sure. I have a good
signal, registration keys and license data. The status panel shows
everything normal. I have tried setting it up with PPP as my outbound,
I even installed diald and tried that as the outbound. No luck.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone actually using the Linux version
of this software.

I'm surprised none of the other responses addressed the legalities of
what you're trying to do.

Have you checked with your local authorities to find out if it's legal
for you to set up a network like this?

You may find yourself suddenly in the category of being a "common
carrier", and subjected to all the red tape associated with being a
baby bell or cable company.

Of course you can just do it and hope you don't get caught.. but then
there are the civil liabilities.. like when lightning hits a tree at
one end of your network and the house at the other end bursts into
flames.

Are you going to install all the protective devices like grounding and
bonding and lightning arrestors? And carry a $1.000.000 insurance
policy?

Things to think about...

As for actually wiring a network like this, use fiber.

That will avoid the problems of ground potential differences and
lightning damage as well as eliminating RF interference.

It will also avoid the length limitations.

It will however cost more.

I'm using RedHat 5.2 and having problems getting an IP address over cable
modem. Here's the details:

@Home cable modem (DHCP)
I am not booting with DHCP, I'm doing it manually; I tries it first on boot
and it failed. Anyways, i've tried using the -h command to specify my
hostname, no go. when I run dhcpcd, my pc light on my cable modem comes on,
and the TD and RD lights both flash a couple of times, then the PC light
goes out and my session is stuck with DHCPcd still running. I am using a
3c509B-TP card, and the 3c509 driver off of the release CD. Any
suggestions?

Many Thanks! Bregt,

It worked. I can see those message about 3c509 for eth1, I never know we need x11
to configure. It did what I need to do on *ifconfig* also. Before, I always believe
I need to complete my work in command prompt console first and run ifconfig to
assign network information.
I suggest we may need to send this step to those people to update Ethernet-HOWTO
which I could only find two files we need to edit for 2nd NIC.

Many Thanks,

Subject: Re: Multi-homed Linux Box

Although what you want to accomplish is perfectly possible under linux, it's
not really practical. A single Ethernet card should be adequate for all of
the functions that you described, unless there are a zillion people in your
organization, all of whom want to hit your linux box. If there are a
zillion people who want to hit your linux box, the best solution is multiple
boxes, not multiple cards in a box. However, to answer your question, I
recommend that you use multiple cards of the same kind (eg. all 3coms or all
Intels). Make sure that you don't have any hardware conflicts between the
cards, such as IRQ or IO port problems. There is an ethernet howto on your
RedHat CD which has a section explaining how to configure RedHat for
multiple NIC's. RedHat will work with Token Ring, the only card I've seen
it work with is an Olicom OC-3137 PCI card. Olicom's FTP site has a driver
for that card, along with some excellent installation instructions.

Good Luck

Check the following:

1. Make sure Linux sees BOTH of your ethernet cards. Check by typing
ifconfig. If you only see eth0 or eth1 and not both, than you need to
configure Linux properly for multiple NIC's See the ethernet howto on the
RedHat CD for a procedure on how to do this.

2. If both NIC's are working, make sure that IP Forwarding is turned on.
The easiest way to do this is to start up X and use the Network
Configuration Tool provided.

3. You will obviously want TCP/IP compiled into the kernel if you intend to
connect to the Internet with your Linux box. You will only need IP
Masquerading if you intend to use your Linux box for address translation.

Good Luck

It sounds like you need to grant read permission on the html files in the
user directory to everyone. To do this, change to the directory where the
file exists (assume it is called chris.html) and use the following command:

chmod o+r chris.html

this will give all users permissions to read chris.html, which is something
that Apache may not have, as it operates as user nobody. You will still
need the symbolic link to show Apache how to get to the file.

Good Luck

1. You need to find out if Linux supports the network card that you
mentioned. Check the web page for the distribution of Linux that you are
using, as they sometimes have a Hardware Compatability list. You might also
obtain a driver from the card manufacturer. I've never head of Realtek, so
you might have to switch to a supported NIC.

2. Assuming that you either obtain a Linux driver for your Realtek or
switch to a supported NIC, you will need to compile your Linux Kernel with
the proper driver in it to support your card. There are many, many
resources for how to do this out on the Internet and at your local
bookstore. It is also somewhat dependant on what distribution of Linux you
are using.

3. FYI, eth0 is a device name, not a file. The first ethernet card in your
Linux machine is referred to by Linux as eth0, the second as eth1, etc.

Good Luck

Try this book:

Samba Integrating UNIX and Windows by John Blair. ISBN 1-57831-006-7

There are many, many Linux networking books out that cover this. I would
suggest checking at www.linux.org for a list and reviews.

Subject: IP Chains / IP Masq FTP Problem
Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 05:02:46 GMT

I've used IP masquerading via ipfwadm for about two years now with
great success. I just set up a new gateway for a cable modem, and I
decided to try IP Chains instead. I downloaded the source and the
2.0.34 patch, and I applied it to my 2.0.36 kernel. I spent some time
creating a firewall script, and everything seemed to work great! Or
so I thought.

I tried to use ftp - I would log on to a remote host, and as soon as I
tried a command like ls or get, I would lose my connection. I then
realized that I forgot to load the ip_masq_ftp module. I loaded it
and everything seemed to work great again... or so I thought.

I tried to use LiveUpdate for Norton Utilities and Norton Antivirus on
my Win95 machines. I would connect to the Symantec ftp site, but
would then lose the connection through the LiveUpdate software. I
tried to connect to the ftp site manually, but when I would try the ls
or get commands, I would lose my connection (just as I wrote above).

I re-installed ipfwadm (a new kernel), and the problem went away. I
like IP Chains because it seems more flexible, but I need to be able
to update my Norton Utilities and my virus definistions.

I tried compiling different kernels with the IP Chains patch, but I
couldn't solve the aforementioned problem. I've even loaded every
ip_masq* module, but I cannot correct this problem.

Does anyone know what's going on, and how I can fix it? I've tried to
find other IP Masquerading tools, but everything that I see mentions
ipfwadm.
