It's possible that your cable modem provider is using a proxy server or
is otherwise blocking some ports. See if you can telnet in to your
server on the ports you're tunneling.

I think the most common problem is that people with an ethernet
interface accidentally assign a default route to it, and then
the ppp connection won't override it as you connect.

That doesn't make much sense: PPP connections only have 2 endpoints
and you can send to either interchangebly. You shouldn't be
sending other addresses to your ppp interface because of the
netmask, you should be sending packets to it because it should
be assigned as your default gateway.

Subject: Increasing the number of allowed hops in IP masquerading
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 00:50:17 +0000
Hello,
At work we use Red Hat Linux 5.0 (kernel 2.0.34) for a firewall and IP
masquerading. We've discovered a problem with some PC's that can't see
a particular web site, apparently because it's too many hops away. If
you run tracert (for trace route) on that PC, you find that it gives up
at around 15 hops. Is there a way to increase this in the Linux box (if
it's in the Linux box at all--or is it a PC/Windows 95 thing?)? I've
checked all of the sources I could find: the IP Masquerading HOWTO,
FAQ, source code, source code documentation, etc. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Your belief that all mail servers are configured to require a correct return
address is groundless. Most of the spam not generated by 'throwaway accounts'
is sent through mail servers that have not been configured properly.

It sounds like you've got the pop server running. The next thing to try is
to connect manually to the server to see what the problem is. Try telneting
to the server on port 110 (which you can specify with windoze telnet). Once
you connect, issue 'USER <your username>'. When prompted for the 'PASS'
command, enter 'PASS <your password>'. If there's a problem with the server,
you should get the exact error here. Another thing to try is to look in the
/var/tmp/.pop directory (at least, that's where it is on my Slackware box)
for a lock file with your name on it. If there is one, remove it, and try
connecting with Outlook again. Good luck!

I've just been playing with the same things myself. The PPP-HOWTO
document shows you how to set up the pppd to use scripts for initiating
the PPP connection automatically - minicom not required (though it is
handy for seeing what's going on during installation).
I found it very easy to follow and all I have to do now to start PPP is
type "ppp-on &". Once I'd fixed my broken modem cable, that is.
[The rest of my network can't share the PPP connection because I can't
recompile my kernel for IP4 packet forwarding - my stdio.h and sys/*.h
files are missing. But that's another problem ...]

If it works with minicom it should work with pppd...
If it was a HSP modem (windows dependent driver) it would not work at all...

Subject: TCP send & Receive Buffer limit
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 17:45:04 -0500
Hi,
I would like to know how to increase the send & receive buffers
maintained by the TCP/IP. I know that one can increase it by using
setsockopt(SocketFd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_SNDBUF, sendBufSizePtr, length)
setsockopt(SocketFD, SOL_SOCKET, SO_RCVBUF, recvBufSizePtr, length)
But it does not allow me to increase it beyond 65535 bytes. Is there
anyway to increase the buffer to like 1Mbytes or something.
If I increase it more than 65535 bytes and try to use getsockopt to
check the size of the buffer, it always returns 131070 (I guess
send+receive). but not beyond that.
I have heard of TCP Window Scaling option at the connection
establishment phase to go beyond the 16-bit limit in the TCP header. But
don't know how to increase it exactly.
can somebody help on this please.
Thanks
Umesh

Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 22:33:31 GMT
I have wrestled with ipfwadm for about a week now. I am using RH5.2,
and ipfwadm 2.3.0-6. All other aspects of the network are working
fine. The problems that I am having now are:
1. I can send mail from my ISP, but can't retrieve any mail. I can
retrieve messages from the news server, however.
2. I have limited www use. I can get to some sites, but not all. Using
dotted quad numbers doesn't seem to affect either way.
I posted earlier this week, with some nice responses, but none seem
to have helped. Here are some pertinent files, I hope someone can
point out what I have wrong. They are the output from route and
ifconfig, as well as the masq script that starts the ipforwarding.

Subject: Linux networking "hangs"

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hiya,
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for this problem. I'm running kernel
2.0.35 on a P200. The config I've got at the moment, for everything, is
one I've had for about 6 months now, with no major problems. Until around the
28th of December.
What happens: Linux seems to forget how to route, or how to send packets. A
telnet into 'localhost' resolves into 127.0.0.1 okay, but then doesn't get
any further. This is caught by TCP wrappers, which, after a while, sends me
an email (via a trap-door rule I have in hosts.allow) that reads:
WARNING!
--------
Hosts.allow detected host that has been denied access:
Remote address: unknown
Remote hostname: unknown
Remote user: unknown
Attempted daemon: in.telnetd
tcpd cannot resolve my machine name. It is *not* DNS -- I've checked that,
restarted, and used nslookup. No problems - it responds.
It happens to all services, not just inetd. The web server, is affected as
well (which runs as a standalone daemon). It's acting as if TCP connections
cannot be made, or are being refused.
Whilst I cannot connect to the remote sites, or even my own machine, I can
still ping and traceroute, so the IP layer is still working. Doing a netstat
reveals the packets getting stuck at the SYN_SENT or SYN_RECV state:

No errors are reported in the /proc files, netstat -i reports one dropped PPP
packet, which I would doubt is the cause...not for a telnet localhost.
I have a firewall running, but I haven't changed that for a month and a half
now, and it's been fine, no problems. It was only last week the problems
kicked in, with no known reason.
I have recompiled the kernel - still the same problem. I removed SYN_COOKIES,
but that didn't fix the problem.
This state persists for varying amounts of time. Sometimes 15mins up, other
times, a couple of mins. It's not constant. Existing connections have no
problems - they can communicate. It's only *new* connections which fail. I'm
not sure if I have the same problem with UDP...not done as much extensive
testing.
I only get the problem when ppp is up...but the problem persists even if I
shut pppd down. This implies something is going on *out there* to cause this,
but I'm only speculating...I have one other network card, a PCI NE2000 clone,
that resides on the 192.168.1/24 network, so doesn't get routed.
If anymore information is needed, please ask for it. I'm confused - nothing
seems to be wrong...do I need to shout at my ISP? :) Suggestions welcome.
TIA,
Chris...

Subject: database suggestions, please?
Hello:
I'm setting up a Linux web server, and need to choose a data base
as well. The data base, when it's actually implemented, will be
updated periodically through the day and needs to be accessible
via CGI. It also needs to interface with Java servlets, SQL, and
ODBC. I have no other criteria other than the database will
become very large, lots of records, say 200 MB to 1 GB file
size. It also needs to be transferable back to Windows NT in
case the boss says we're moving back to NT.
I've looked at SAL's home page of databases. There are just so
many to choose from. The big commercial guys (Informix, Oracle,
IBM DB2) offer mostly vague marketing material on their web
sites. I've been interested in some of the products from Europe.
Without rambling on more, I'm interested in whether one of you
could suggest a database for me. The only real requirement is
that the database/server have quick performance given it will
likely be big, be well documented (I'm coming to Linux from
Windows), and be the Relational type. I don't mind spending big
bucks on it if there are obvious advantages.
Thanks. Really appreciate any replies.

Subject: PCMCIA 3com 3c589 Redhat 5.2
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 22:32:55 GMT
I am having trouble getting 3com 3c589 Ethernet card working under Redhat 5.2
Looking at /var/log/messages I get the following:
eth0: 3Com 3c589, port 0X300, irq 3, Auto port, hw_addr 00:10:4B:ED:12:3C
starting, version is 3.0.5
watching 2 sockets
intitializing socket 0
socket 0: 3Com 3c589D Ethernet
executing: 'insmod /lib/modules/preferred/pcmcia/3c589_cs.o'
executing: './network start eth0'
+ usage: ifup <device name>
It seems to me that there is no name associated with the device:
executing: './network start eth0'
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Gavin LaRowe
