Hello,
i found out that ftp needs two tcp connections to the server.
The first one is to port 21, and for dir/ls the port 20 seems to be
used. Are these default values always the same? (i mean esp. port 20)

And if so, is it secure to allow incoming connections for this port?
Thanx,
Arash :-)

I found that the entry in the /etc/ppp/options file was telling ppp
not to go into the background when the connection was successful. I
changed it from the SuSE default and I get my command prompt back to
go on to launch other things.

O.K. here's it..

2 machines , 1 pentium and 1 486DX the pentium has a dialup connection
to an ISP.

I've build the network and got it working at least that is, telnet and
ftp without using an DNS.
the pentium runs win98 (also linux but this is not the primary OS here).

the 486DX runs Linux with samba server.
the pentium only has one user.
When that user try to access the shares on the 486DX there are 3
possibilities.
1 No access what so ever.
2 Request for a password, wich was given in previous sessions and to
be stored.
    3 No problem.
I can't find out what the differences are in those session.

A speed test with a file of 850kB downloaded from 486DX with ftp in
win98 takes me 6 sec.
the same file downloaded from 486DX but than with linux on yhe pentium
only takes me 1 sec.
any suggestions here ?????

Last issue,
every time when start a telnet or ftp session (in win98) to the 486DX
,first an attempt is made to try the ISP (so I cancel the dialup
sequence) then it connects.
I tried using a DNS (ofcourse imight have missed something there) but
the only difference was that instead of using the IP-addresses icould
use the names of the machines (naturaly).

Anybody with any answers and/or suggestions.

Telnet from a PC under Windows to Linux works correctly, excepted for
root.
It is a home LAN (2 PC !) without security problem.

Where is the key ?

I'm trying to set up Samba on my Redhat 5.1 Linux (i386) box and the nmbd
daemon loads fine (and the Win98 machine on my network can find the linux
box ), but the smbd daemon errors out with the following message:

bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=0.0.0.0 (Address already in use)

Any ideas what the problem might be? Or even what might help me track it
down?

Thanks in advance for any help,

That is a long way to go to get to the server. Install apple protocol and
name service on the Novell server then download and install the Novell
client for the g3. You will then be able to login to the Novell server

I reckon your network is back-to-front. Get linux to do the connecting to
the cable modem, run ip-masquerading, and you can have much more fun. IP
masquerade is not a proxy - it is a complete network address translation.

The Wingate product (from what i know) is a www Proxy - which means it
basically only works for web browsing. Without getting too technical,
wingate only does ip-translation for the web browsing. Whereas IPMasq does
translation for ALL.

This is why PING, (Active Mode)FTP and TELNET will not work with wingate but
will with ipmasq.

Simply Linux has no problem with "general tcp/ip" configuration, but NT
does, and Wingate is only a patch to allow web browsing on multiple machines
via NT.

Yes, that is how it is setup normally by default. Other users can
login via telnet, but root is prevented from "direct" login, i.e.
you can still login as telnet as another user and then "su" to root.

I believe you can modify this by creating/editing the file
/etc/securetty,
just do a "man securetty" to get the syntax.

Best regards!

Ryan,

I did check out the url provided by ts and found it to be useful. I had
exactly the same problem as you for my new RHL installation. Configure ppp
using linuxconf and make sure you enable PAP; you should be connected to

That didn't work with "ln -s". And my first tries with the <directory>

I am using proftpd. Any hints?

Nothing to it! Earthlink does not run PPP or CHAP so there is no
script secrets to use. Just edit your /etc/ppp/ppp.chat file to
respond to the Earthllink prompts for username and password. Make
sure that their nameserver addresses:

207.217.126.81
207.217.77.82
207.217.120.83

Are in your /etc/resolv.conf file. There might be some options in
your /etc/ppp/options file that you might need to set to make ppp a
background task. I use Earthlink and that was all that I needed to do
to SuSE 6.0 Linux out of the box to make it connect to my local
Earthlink number.

Is there a way to disable PnP on a 3Com EtherLink XL PCI 3C900-TPO?
When I try to change the IRQ with the 3C90XCFG.EXE that came with

Rogers @Home gave me the choice of what I wanted. I chose PCI. But I'm
sure you can get an ISA card. You may want to check out the web site for
whoever you @Home provider is. They may specify that a free PCI slot is a
requirement, if they don't, you'll probably get to choose your card either
when they set up your installation appointment over the phone, or when
they come to your house to install the modem.

Whatever card you'll get will be 10Mbps. You cable modem will never use
all this bandwidth anyways. A 100Mbps wouldn't make your connection any
faster.

Good Luck,

        Mike

I found out myself that it is possible (in my config)
It is very simple : type the Ip-address and the port number of your proxy in
the right place and it works!

Thanks for the info. Going for a floppy-based setup
sounds like a good idea, although I'm not sure how
well that will work on only 12 mb ram. If it doesn't,
I might try having the hdd spin down, which is almost
as good from a mechanical standpoint.

Yes, I get the same response when ftp'ing to localhost. I've checked the following:

/etc/ftpaccess (lists my user name)
/etc/ftpgroups
/etc/ftpusers (my user login not listed here)
/etc/ftpconversions
/etc/ftphosts (lists my user name with win98 ip)

/etc/hosts.allow (here is the ip address of my win98 box)

I believe I have them setup correctly but am not %100 sure. Can't seem to find any
documentation that explains the difference (like ftphosts & hosts.allow) etc...

Thanks again,
