Subject: NFS Install on RedHat 6.0
Date: Thu, 08 Jul 1999 13:18:35 GMT
Ok. I am having problems getting RH 6.0 to properly export a NFS share
so I can install from it. Here is the situation. I have RH 6.0
installed on my main tower, w/ copious amounts of hard drive space. I
intend to copy the cdroms of the various distro's I'm playing w/ to
the /pub directory. I have several 486's w/ LinkSys Ether16 cards, but
no cdrom. I have one of the 486's w/ Slackware 4.0 on it (before it's
cdrom crapped out), and I am trying to iron out the wrinkles of NFS
permissions btwn the slakware box and the rh box so I can install in
the rest of the 486's. I am using the home network address of
192.168.1.0 w/ netmask 255.255.255.0. My /etc/hosts on the rh box
looks like:
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.1 shaitan.milanuk.net shaitan
192.168.1.3 sammael.milanuk.net sammael
192.168.1.4 asmodean.milanuk.net asmodean
192.168.1.5 lanfear.milanuk.net lanfear
My hosts_allow file is somewhat unclear at this time. I would really
rather not have ALL:ALL in it; can I
have 'nfs:192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0' to allow nfs to the local network?
/etc/hosts.allow
portmap: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
# per Caldera 2.2 manual ?
My /etc/hosts.deny is currently blank
I would not like to give widespread access in my exports file,
so here it is:
/etc/exports
/pub *.milanuk.net (ro)
After setting all this, I did /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs stop,
then /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs start
My slackware box will, depending on which way I have my files
configured, either say 'permission denied' or else successfully mount
w/ 'mount -t nfs 192.168.1.1:/pub /pub', then allow me to browse the
volume, but when I try to copy a file from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.4
(the slackware box), I get '192.168.1.1 not responding, keep trying'
twice, then usually a complaint about not being able to get or request
a slot or something, and it hangs, and I cannot kill the 'cp'; the only
way to break it is to stop nfs on the rh box. The funny thing is, as
the nfs is shutting down, it suddenly copies the file o.k. WTF?
any help would be appreciated. I have been going thru my RH manual, my
SuSE manual, my Caldera manual, my FreeBSD manual, The Linux Network,
Essential System Adminstration, the man pages for export, nfs, and
mount, and the NFS howto. Everything seems to assume that something
prior to /etc/exports is set up properly, which apparently it isn't.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your time,
Monte

Hello World !!!!!
I've a question referring to the modem above. I heard that it should be
supported bij the kernel. Nevertheless I'm not able to find it. But the
modem is recognized bij linux, but as an unknowned device. Oh, right I'm
using kernel 2.2.5.
I also checked th /init.d/serial for the right settings, but either the
modem is not answering or busy.
PLEASE HELP ME. I HATE MICROSOFT (MOST OF THE TIME).

I want to use Linux Server as print server, with samba I can share the
printer for Windows Platform. Sure I can directly sent the print job to Jet
Direct Printer Server, but I would like the Linux Server handle the print
queue.
There are two points i am confusing:
1. If there is no driver for a particular printer under Linux, can that
printer be configured to print Microsoft Word Documents via samba? Does the
Windows Platform need to install the printer driver?
2. If the printer is not configured using print tools, i.e. no entry in
/etc/printcap, and I add the printer directly from samba and share it, will
it be able to print documents from Microsoft Windows Platform? Need driver
installed on the MS Windows workstation?

Hi again,
There are still problems with my PCMCIA - Token Ring card ....
Remember:
I have installed SUSE Linux 6.1., Kernel 2.2.5 compiled with TOKEN RING
as part. Meanwhile I used the PCMCIA package 3.0.12 (does not work) and
now I use it combined with some files of PCMCIA 3.0.5 as one of you
suggested. I changed the high memory window.
The result: My laptop boots, but there are errors as "ibmtr:
register_trdev( ) returned non-zero", "tr0: Hardware timeout during
initialization", "ibmtr_cs: register_trdev( ) failed", "tr0: unexpected
interrupt from tr adapter", "kmem_free: Bad obj address" etc...
If I connect my card to the ring after booting, ifconfig -a sometimes
gives back a tr0 interface (with Hardwareadress 00.00 ...), sometimes it
doesn't and sometimes (most times) it gives back "segmentation fault".
I have no idea where to look, so, please help !!!!!
Bye,
Gabi

I was reading a some messages from a couple weeks ago on ethernet to
serial. But they never mentioned how to do it. All that was said, is
it is easy to do in Linux.
What program do I use or how do a set it up? I have a serial device
that runs at 4800 bits/s, no parity, 8 data bits, 2 stop bits. I have
seen a program called serial redirector, but not sure if that will work
to the settings that I need. I want to be able to control it over a
network with a win95 machine. I'm not sure what I would use to access
it. I'm thinking through a telnet session or something of the sort.
To give some foresight, I would like to have a user interface for
the client, such as a Visual Basic form, or java applet from a web
page. Neither of which I am quite sure on how to program.
Thanks for your time.

Do you have fetchall in your ~/.fetchmailrc? This forces fetchmail to

Subject: NFS problem between Linux & AIX

Hi,
I have an E20 running AIX 4.2.1.0 and a linux box running redhat 6
(2.2.9). The two are connected across a PPP link through a series of
routers etc.
On the linux box, I have an NFS directory exported as:
/dir_name (no_root_squash)
which I can happily NFS mount to all the other machines (Sun, Linux,
hp-ux ...) in the same location, but not the AIX box. The AIX box gives
the error message:
mount: 1831-008 giving up on:
client_host:/dir_name
vmount: Operation not permitted.
and the error message generated on linux says:
Jul 8 17:37:02 <server_host> mountd[20468]: authenticated mount request
from <client_host>:990
Jul 8 17:37:02 <server_host> kernel: nfsd: request from insecure port
(cb08aa26:1124)!
I have tried mounting it with NFS version 2 (vers=2 in the mount
options), and with/without secure option (secure in the mount options)
still no success. Any help is appreciated.

You can try this command on AIX box before you wount the FS :
# nfso -o nfs_use_reserved_ports=1

Date: Thu, 08 Jul 1999 14:44:30 GMT
Hi,
I think this won't be a great help, but maybe this is a clue for
another -more competent- reader: I have the same problem but other
preconditions: I'm trying to mount a Linux machine to another Linux
machine via NFS. Both are running SuSE 6.1 (kernel 2.2.5). My exports
file looks similar to Halfdan's except for replacing map_nis=pison.com
by map_static=/etc/nfs/user_map. The result is the same as described
by Halfdan. All entries of user_map are simply ignored and each
UID/GID is substituted with user nobody. When I launch nfsd with
maximum verbosity I can see that the user_map is parsed correctly but
-as I said before- everything is ignored at all. So may it be that
mapping is not implemented at all? Or if it is implemented, how can it
be activated ?

This is basically a guess since I haven't done this yet, but I plan to in the
future. You should be able to run dhcpd and use it to assign an ip to your
other computer. let me know if this works. Another idea would be to assign
your other computer an ip address and use your linux box as a gateway. Like I
said I haven't tried this so I'm not sure. I'm used to working within an
assigned range, not just one host address.

Ok, I did this, and got a little bit more information:

Has anyone seen this before? I have a timeout of 90 set up for the

The chat script doesn't seem to complete, because I see this:

The ppp0 interface never gets brought up.
Any help would be appreciated...I've been hitting my head against the

It seems that whenever a certain acquaintance of mine
sends me an email, it becomes "stuck" in the system.
The POP3/SMTP server is a Linux box running Slackware
3.5, Qmail 1.x. The clients have all been Netscape
Communicator, v4.05-4.6, Windows and Linux.
It's only messages from this guy, and it's *every*
message from this guy. Each time I go to retrieve
POP mail, I get a new copy of any mail he might have
sent me. If I go in via pine and manually delete
the offending messages, it throws Netscape and my
Inbox out of sync, and the entire Inbox gets
reloaded to my browser (over a modem line... yawn)
I've attached some of the recent headers.
Anyone have any ideas? Danke.
