Hello!
I wrote here once before conserning this, but it don't seem to be posted, so
I'll try it again:
Me and some friends have connected our 3 PCs (Windows 98) into a little LAN
(Only using the standars TCP/IPX and IP stuff that comes with win98).
Now we have been offered a Cable modem so we are planning to use a linux box
as a router. the problem is:
Exactly WHAT do we need to be able to get all 3 win98 machines connected to
the Internet. I haven't got that much experience with linux, but I now some
stuff.
As far as I know, i need a machine with 2 NICs, and put that between the modem
and the LAN:
|------| |------| |-------|
|Modem | <-----------> |Linux | <-----------> | LAN |
|------| |------| |-------|
The thing is: WHAT kinda stuff is needed on the linux box?
Ip-masquerading?
I'll get right to the case:
I need HELP! :-)
Tell me ALL kinda stuff that is needed to be installed, and are there any
other HARDWARE needed (I can't possibly think of any)?
All protocols, all programs, just letmeknow! :-)
In advance, thanks ALOT!

You have to use the Ne2000 compatble PCI nic driver. It is included in Suse
5.3 and 6.0

Subject: Cisco router help

I inherited a whole network system which included a Cisco 2500 router.
The PC's on the network are running Linux 2.0.34.
I want to use MRTG to monitor my the bandwidth of my leased line going
through the router.
I installed and compiled MRTG and the software needed for it, but when I try
to run MRTG the connection to my router gets refused.
I am told my router will not accept SNMP connections, which is what MRTG
uses.
I am not sure what to really do, but I think it is something to do with the
configuration of the router.
I try telenetting into my router and get asked for a password, which is one
thing I did not inherit.
Do I need to access the router to configure it to accept SNMP connections?
If so how do I do this, and configure it to do so?
Has anyone come across this problem and solved it?
Any help would be appreciate.
Thanks
Tony

Subject: Ipchains on a LAN...?
Date: 11 Apr 1999 22:51:19 GMT
Hi,
I'm a newbie to networking with Linux, and I've struggled with this
for a while now. I have two computers on a small LAN - one is a Linux
box with a cable modem connection that is split between the two. I
have been trying without any success to get the second computer to
access the cable modem, and have gotten nothing but frustrated. I've
read the Net-3 and the Ipchains HOWTO and am still no further along.
On the Linux box, eth0 is connected to the LAN and eth1 to the 'Net;
eth0 has an address of 192.168.0.1, and the other computer
192.168.0.2. What I tried to do with Ipchains was detect all packets
coming from 192.168.0.2 and send them on to eth1, but this did not
work:
ipchains -N LAN
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.0.2 -d 192.168.0.1 -j LAN
ipchains -A LAN -i eth1 -j ACCEPT
The LAN works on TCP, specifying the protocol made no difference.
I know I should add another set of rules for packets going to the
other computer from the 'Net, but I'm not sure how to go about that;
I would like to masquerade the packets. Is there anyone that has
had success with this? Is there any documentation I should be
reading - I couldn't find anything else in the HOWTOs. Any help
would be greatly appreciated,
Peter

Here is the scoop. I have a Win95 box and a Linux (RedHat 5.2) box. I
only have 1 modem and I want the RedHat box to act as an IP and file
server. I also want to be let either machine borrow the other's printer.
The Winbox has a color printer (Canon BJC-250) While the Linux machine
has a Panasonic dot matrix printer. (not set up yet.) I also want to be
able to retrieve files between the two.
How to I set up the Linux machine to talk to the winbox? How do I set up
the Winbox to talk to Linux? What is best to use Samba or IP Masquerade?
Are they one and the same? HELP!
I have asked these questions in this newsgroup before but I was unable
to retrieve the answers before they were dropped from the server. Any
reposting would be appreciated. How about top notch books on the subject
that are not going to make me run up the national debt trying to figure
this out.
The whole idea again is I am trying to make Linux do the dialing for my
Windoze box. (and act as a firewall.) along with the basics of printer
and file sharing.

Yes, you need to telnet to your router to be able to change its config.
Therefore, you need either to get the password or call Cisco to reset
your router.

I'm already using John Hardin's PPTP Masquerade patch. (Very good work,
John!)
Now I have different scenario. I was helping somebody out... their
configuration is as follows:
NT domain with PDC BDC etc
|
Linux Masquerading Router/Firewall
|
98 Client
I know all about LMHOSTS etc. But that only works if the linux box is a
router and not a masquerading firewall... this is because the MS domain
stuff uses a lot of RPC and masquerading interferes with that. (I'm
infereing here.... i may be totally wrong).
I'm wondering if anyone has managed to get this scenario to work...
whether there is any "netbios masquerade" patch similar to John Hardin's
PPTP stuff.

Did you unpacked the kernel.tar under /usr/src???? So it will make a directory
called linux under /usr/src.

I don't think that the 'internet is busy' applies in this case. I've
experienced similar problems, but my PPP connection is actually through a
win95 box running SyGate.
I get to about 100k to 125k and my Netscape download window displays
'stalled'. At other times, it will seem to download the entire file, i.e. the
window says 100%, but the window just hangs there with that stop button just
staring at me. Of course, I can see the file in the dir I downloaded it to,
but if I go hit the stop button, kiss it goodbye.
I know someone is going to flame me, but I can return to my win95 box and
download the same file with no problems. <:/
I know some may suggest it's a problem with SyGate, but sounds like Scott is
having a similar problem with PPP on his box without the gateway software
thrown into the mix.
Any ideas, anyone?

Hi,
I have two computers here, one is a linux/win98(192.168.0.2) machine and the
other is a win98 (192.168.0.1) computer which is a proxy host to the
internet. They are connected to each other via a 10mbit ethernet connection
which works fine under windows 98. I am now trying to connect the linux to
the windows 98 so I can transfer files, telnet etc, hopefully get the linux
machine onto the internet someday. I have configured the ethernet card
under linux and I think it is ok as a confirmation message is shown at
boot-up, and the interface 'eth0' is up and running and pointing to the
'tulip' module which corresponds to my ethernet card.
However, I have tried going through the NET-3-HOWTO and other docs but I
dunno, I can't seem to understand what it is saying. If anybody could give
me a basic configuration for this (I am trying to using 'netcfg') just to
get something up and running. I simply do not know what to put into the
edit boxes here. I am not sure if samba is called for or not.
Any help or pointers would be much appreciated. I know I'm clueless but
hey, I'm learning.
Also perhaps a mini-howto on how to set up basic functionality as this would
be helpful.

It's an HX chipset, and disabling UDMA in the bios took the errors away.

Truthfuly, I don't know, but I'd guess that you may need to boot to DOS, and use
their setup program to initialize the card first...
