My department here at the University plan to install a WWW server but
someone needs dynamic html pages linked to a DB server. They are planning
to install a W. NT server (can you belive it?) since they know how to do
that on that OS, and replace the current Debian GNU/Linux.

Please help me to solve this terrible mistake and point me to an easy way
to install such a system on Linux.

I know I need:

1. WWW server (Apache, ofcourse)

2. DB server: PosgreSQL, msql, mysql, ... PosgreSQL seems very convenient
as I think follows an Open Source spirit.

3. The linking stuff: cgi? perl? Here is the main problem, as I have no
experience with this and the people going to write WWW-DB pages have no
experience on Linux either.

Please, help to avoid this horrible crime (NT instead of Linux).

Jorge.

You don't use DHCP over PPP (despite some badly-labeled Microsoft control
panels).

PPP clients always receive their IP addresses from the NT RAS server by means
of the standard PPP negotiation (IPCP). It sounds like you have this working
fine.

You have to enter the DNS server IP addresses manually; you do this in the
kppp setup.

If you don't know these addresses, run winipcfg at the Windows Start>Run menu.
Choose "More Info" when the panel shows up.

Windows clients can get this information automatically by using a non-standard
extension to IPCP. However you have to enter it yourself in kppp (pppd).

Richard

Subject: struct ip_options -- porting help
Date: 12 Apr 1999 19:38:50 GMT

struct ip_options seems to be similiar to the AIX(BSD) struct ipoption,
except that the definition of 'saved first hop address':
   AIX:
        struct ipoption {
        struct  in_addr ipopt_dst;      /* first-hop dst if source routed */
        char    ipopt_list[MAX_IPOPTLEN];       /* options proper */
        };

   Linux (glibc 2.1):
        struct ip_options
          {
             u_int32_t faddr; /* Saved first hop address */
        [snip]

   Linux (2.2.5-ac6 kernel source):
        struct ip_options {
          __u32 faddr; /* Saved first hop address */
        [snip]

The code I'm porting does this with the field:
        inet_ntoa(ipopt.ipopt_dst)

What do I need to do to the Linux int to achieve the same results?

Subject: 3Com 3C900 Broke With Kernel 2.2.3 Upgrade (help please!)
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 21:18:27 -0700

I'm getting very desperate. I installed Mandrake Linux 5.3 (Kernel
2.0.36) for the first time a couple weeks ago and have been using it
problem free. But I recently installed the RPM's for the Kernel
2.2.3-ac4 upgrade using kpackage, updated the lilo.conf file, and the
new kernel booted just fine, except that my ethernet card has suddenly
stopped working. The "using DHCP for eth0" line found during the boot
process now says "Failed" after a few seconds. It's a PCI card, 3Com
3C900-TPO connected to a RoadRunner cable modem (uses DHCP server). When
I upgraded I installed all the RPM's available on the FTP site,
including the DHCP update, and as far as I can tell they all installed
with no problem.

The card is detected properly during the boot and has no conflicts with
any other hardware. Here's some of the output from dmesg:

So I went to the /var/log/message file and had a look through it for any
info
that it might give about why it's not working... this is what I found
that was
related to my network card:

I can ping my own IP, but anything else just doesn't work. I've tried
specifying addresses manually (nameserver, gateway, etc) using ifconfig
and netcfg in X, as well as Linuxconf but nothing works. I usually get
the "cannot assign requested address" or some other such message. If
anyone has any ideas as to how to solve this, I'd be very grateful :)

PosgreSQL and msql are buggy and often slow. MySQL is not quite free,
but cheap and with a liberal license policy. Besides that it's fast
and stable. Try it out. If you can live with its limitations, keep it.

You can use Perl, but for newbies PHP might be easier. There are
Apache modules for both languages, so you can avoid the CGI overhead.

About this part i think the best would be to install apache, php3 and
mysql server.
You can find very fine tutorials on the net.
www.mysql.org
www.php3.net ou www.php.net not sure...

Unless your network is switched and you can log-on to the switcher and query
those for the port-to-mac tables, your only chance is to inspect the puters
one by one.

Hi,

I have read both HOWTO's but I couldn't figure out what sort of
additional hardware I have to acquire.
I have three machines (of which I have to network at least 2) sitting in
one room: 2 Linux boxes and 1 NT box. The linux box has a network card
and is networked by means of a cable modem.

I'm guessing I should stick an NIC card into each of the other machines
and get some sort of a hub, but what exactly? Where do I find out?

Thanks a lot in advance!

GLIBC 2.1.1-0.2

IIRC, gethostbyname was implicated at first, but I think others got
beyond that and hit other problems ;-{

Has anyone seen (and hopefully) found a solution (other than downgrading
to GLIBC 2.0)?

Take a look in your Apache configuration file, usually
/usr/local/apache/etc/httpd.conf. There should be some line saying
"TransferLog /usr/local/apache/var/log/access.log" (or something like
that). Well, this directive uses the standard NCSA log format. Change
this line to "CustomLog /usr/local/apache/var/log/access.log combined"
to log the refering IP and used browser type. I guess you have to use
Apache 1.3 or higher to do this.

Subject: Apache Virtual Hosts
Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 21:57:15 +1000

Hi All,
I have this interesting problem when trying to configure Virtual hosts on
my box.

The problem is due to the fact I have a static hostname, on a dynamic IP,
and the updating of the IP is done by DHCP (I think). I use the service
provided by http://www.ddns.org to complete my tasks.

Seeing I only have 1 IP, I attempt to use the NameVirtualHost Directive
with a fully qualified domain, so I have name based virtual hosts, so I
have the following:

NameVirtualHost shortboy.ddns.org

<VirtualHost shortboy.ddns.org>
ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /home/bshort/public_html/sbp
ServerName shortboy.ddns.org
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost shortboy.ddns.org>
ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /home/bshort/public_html/pp/
ServerName gottabe.penguinpowered.com
</VirtualHost>

However, this produces the following error:

httpd: [Tue Apr 13 20:47:18 1999] [warn] _default_ VirtualHost overlap on
port 80, the first has precedence
httpd: [Tue Apr 13 20:47:18 1999] [warn] NameVirtualHost
shortboy.ddns.org:80 has no VirtualHosts

And then all virtualhosts go to shortboy.ddns.org

If i replace the shortboy.ddns.org with my IP, then everything works
fine, but for relatively obvious reasons, I dont want to have to edit the
conf file every time my IP changes.

Any ideas anyone? :)

Thanks
Ben

I have an Eicon ISDN 2.01 PCI which works painlessly, but I had to get
a new driver from someone, who said that I needed kernel 2.0,34, 35 or
36. You can find the driver here: <url:

However, the Eicon 2.0 PCI should work from scratch I guess, but I am
not familiar with the SuSe distribution. (Warning: don't get the pro

I tried Phil Karn's source and things worked fine...now on to ip_masq...

hi chris
 this is absolutely too inspecific -
read the howto on samba,
try it out
and if it doesn't work,
describe WHAT isn't working and what you have done so far
( smb.conf .... etc?)

your network-server needs at least an ip-adress plus subnet mask , in the
same segment as the win9x clients, plus a name for the machine, and be sure
to decide whether you want a peer to peer network ( workgroup) or a
client-server ( domain). with just a few win9x machines peer to peer seems
the better option.
