Did you follow the instructions for recompiling the kernel in the HOWTO?
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make zImage (or make bzImage)
make install (or copy the kernel manually to /boot)
make install_module
edit lilo configuration /etc/lilo.conf
/sbin/lilo
Note: enable the "Development and experimental drivers" option in
menuconfig, or you will not be able to see the option for the EtherExpress
Pro network card. This driver (eepro) is still considered as under
development.
The eepro driver has been updated for the 2.2 kernel, and it worked fine for
me under both 2.0.36 and 2.2.4 (I have a RH5.2/kernel 2.2.4 box with two
eepro's working as a firewall)
BTW, it's always a good idea to make a backup copy of yout old kernel _and_
the kernel modules directory (/lib/modules/2.0.36 in your case). Setup lilo
to boot either the new kernel or the old kernel.

Looks like a problem with MTU Discovery. How is L1 connected to
the Internet ? Directly from the L1 Linux machine, or from a
router attached to the L1 local net ? Is any firewalling
configured on the Linux machine (or on the router, whichever
applicable) ?
In brief: You must not filter out "ICMP Destination Unreachable:
Fragmentation Required but Don't Fragment Bit Set" packets. Or,
try configuring the PPP link with MTU equal to 1500 on both sides.
If this is not the solution, ask again ...

Not really. The other card should have 192.168.87.1 (private network)
and i should catc the routed network (193.138.44.64) on 193.138.44.23..
Here's a picture how my network topology looks like:

I'm saying that if I traceroute from a distant machine to the other -
routed IP (193.138.44.66 for example), it starts looping. I tried to
alias one other from the "default" net (193.138.44.25) and I could get
on no problem - e.g. telnet/ping/etc from distant to alias worked.
I'm adding output of traceroute to the default IP and to the aliased one
below..

Am i right in assumption, that if another network was routed to this IP,
I should be able to catch those IPs, if I had matching aliases on the
card? At the moment I have the feeling that those IPs are not routed
right..

So I would rather have

I noticed this, it's fun reading /var/log/log.nmb. :-)
But now something new appeared: cannot find domain master browser. The samba
server is not configured to be a domain master and I thought it wouldn't be
necessary since the time samba was a domain master the problem was even worse,
sometimes samba couldn't even be found with Find->Computers.
Perhaps some more information on the configuration might help:
Samba server:
Samba 1.9.18p10
domain master = no
local master = yes
preferred master = no
os level = 2
2 NT Workstation with SP4 (in the same workgroup as the samba server)
Another odd thing: On one NT box (NT1) I can see the other NT (NT2) and the Samba
server in network neighborhood, but smbclient -L //NT1 states as browse list NT1
and NT2 with NT1 as master.
And to make life even more complicated: on the same subnet are some more Linux
boxes (without samba, I think they shouldn't matter) and, also on the same subnet
but behind a switch, two other NT domains with one NT Server each.
Since I've tried nearly every combination of the master lines above (even setting
os level to 255) and all didn't help I'm pretty clueless now. At least one can
connect to the samba server, but I have the feeling there is something going
wrong.

Topic sums up the configuration..
I SSH (3DES encryption) into the Linux box with SecureCRT 2.4b1, and export
DISPLAY to my NT Workstation.
Now do I make X11 *secure*?

Hey, is this an advertisement?
I can't believe that a newsgroup is the right place for your
concern. I suppose you should really invest some money an get
someone to you you place.

I'm not sure why you would want to use the Linux box as your router for the
two realworld static IP boxes, security? Using linux as a router is great
for the internal subnet but if your other two machines need their static IP
addresses available to the outside world, why don't you just use the same
external gateway IP as the Linux router box on the other machines? It may
not be what you want, but it'll get them on the net without showing the linux
ip.
