I have ste up a linux server running samba and it seems to work.
<detial of disaster recoverys snipped>
Generally the system can be made to automtaically reboot in the case
of a panic and it works again. However it is not really an issue: uptimes
of years are easy (if not common, due to kernel upgrades).
>The second is domain controlled file / directory access. Does linux

NDS is avialable for linux. Apart from that Unices generally have little
need for them, as eveyone never notices crossing mount points, the difference
between remote and local printers, etc. They all work the same. (Directories
are very useful to bad guys).
Samba supports windows * network browsing, selectable on a per share
basis, for those using systems where this sort of things is required
(instead of just saying the stuff is in /usr/local/tex and not needing
to worry about which of your 42 file servers stores that
directory). Windows 2000 will allegedy have this feature (I will
believe only if I see it).

Samba will authenticate against a NT server. You generally have to
work into the server first. This is a NT problem not fixable from
samba. You can use local passwords and the latest samba has some
domain control features (this may currently be experimental). PAM
aware stuff can authenticate against virually anything (standard
password files, NT, radius servers, NIS/NIS+ servers, securID, and
whatever else you can program).
You might want to migrate gradually.
Setting the owners, groups, etc is even easier than NT. Users can be
members of as many groups as you like (possibly up to some maximum
which is at least 16). There is more two: unicies, including linux,
support quotas as well. Only the super user can change ownership to
stop quota evasion.
>Or do
>we need to run another machine as a Linux PDC? If so this would
>mean converting to a Linux proxie/mail server and domain controller.
In my experience linux is a better mail server, period. A few days of
bugtraq was sufficient to cause one mail server to choke and I think
it was running NT. Practiacal experience shows that NTmail is *very*
unstable. I managed more than 4 weeks of bugtraq with a Linux IMAP
server... and sendmail is very stable. (This did take a while over a
56K modem).
As for proxies windows is generally less stable and a lot less
secure. The latter is a serious reason for not using NT (and windows *
in general). A non routing proxy running windows is proabbly a *big*
mistake for security reasons.
>Last is a little feature that NT offers over 98 is the "who has the file open"
>feature. After many many "users running around the office saying
>who has the file open and every1 says not me", we want the ability to see/control
>what user is accessing what files. NT offers this, but what does Linux

You can find which processes have a file open and their user and group
with standard tools. Keeping track of who has what inode and what
device open is not something the kernel does (but could be done if you
need it, you have the OS source code to hack if you feel the
need). RCS and various other version control systems will keep track
of this sort of thing too, with the bonus you can undo their changes.
A lot of free software users CVS.
Access control is by users and groups. ACLs are not yet supported but
99.99% of the time creating a special group and putting the right
programs or users in it does the trick. If you do need ACLs Cygnus,
and their competition, would probably add them for your given
sufficient funds.
>Any comments?
FYI samba has some cute substitutions you can put in path, for example
the user name, and beats NT when serving NT clients. The former could
be used for some sorts of access control, by exporting different bits
of a given tree to different users.

Does your Linux box act as a mail exchanger or mail client? Does it have

I'm afraid you're right --- they use the abbreviation ACAD a lot in their
documentation, but they don't appear to have registered it as a
trademark --- understandable, but it lets shysters like these folks
advertise shoddy products as though they were legitimate....

with respect to this there exist an interesting german article in the
"ct" magazine (Heise Verlag):

This article adresses issues like SMP performance, etc, and explains
why Linux might turn out comparatively weak in the mindcraft-specific
setup. I think it would be worth the traduction!

No need to appologize. The DND site isn't going to say that we joined
an unpopular war. I've read extensively about Canada's political
history during and including the period between both wars and the 3 to
1 figure just isn't supportable outside of Quebec. Anyway this is way
off topic for these newsgroups.

When I attempt to print a document, it can't find the print queue. Does

Depending upon your modem..... some have initialization string
commands that allow you to not wait for a dial tone before dialing.
If you have one there's your answer just add that switch to the init
string.

Hi,
Here is something even simpler (but dumb). It will always work and
doesn't even need awk.
Just put the line
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth1.info
in your script and the ip address will be in $IPADDR

Hello,
I have been using ppp, but just got ADSL, and want to use them
(temporarily) as simultaneous connections to the internet.
The reason for this is I am currently running my own DNS and web
server, and they are currently configured for the IP associated
with ppp. I'd like to reconfigure so that I am able to answer
DNS and HTTP requests over either interface, then once that's
working, move the default for both to the ADSL line.
However, if I configure either as the default route, then the
other one doesn't seem to work, since the replies seem to be
coming from the wrong place.
Is there a way to configure the routing so that requests coming
in on each interface are answered on that interface?

Try removing the cache file:
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth1.cache
before starting dhcpcd. Try it by had first and add this to
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup if it works.
I had to do this in my setup.

The X-Terminal (its an "hardware" X-Server that has no hard disk, just a screen,
keyboard and mouse plus a few ports including BNC network).
Actually its a Sun 3/50 (well, we have more than one, some higher specs) which of
course needs its own version of the X-Server in order to work correctly with Linux.
There is a hacked Xkernel for Linux and this version of the Sun terminal but I dont
know where to get hold of it.

Just go to www.SAMBA.org and download samba-2.0.4b, install it and all
will be hunky dory.

available right now?
Yes. There are many distros that can help you
directly and indirectly. Take a look at Linux
Weekly News (www.lwn.net) in the distribution
section. There are several micro (single
2-4MB floppy) distros that can get you started.
Most of these are made for the Intel processor
family, but one should get you started.

Yes... in a sense. I do not know of a
set of commercial tools, but there are plenty of
HOWTOs for creating a bootable floppy which can
then be converted into a bootable ROM.
> -are there companies that might be able to aid
us in development of kernel specific and/or
application code?
Yes. RedHat/Caldera/SuSE offer contract agreements
for assisting professional development. There are
several programmers that would love to help out.

Subject: LPD to a remote printer!

Does anyone know how exactly to set up the "printcap" file to spool
files to a remote printer.
This will of course be from Slackware Linux 3.5 to another machine
running exactly the same release of Linux.
Just cant seem to get the Printer Server to allow it in.
Telnet, Ping etc work fine and all the computers I plan to print from
are listed in the Hosts and Hosts.allow files on the Printer Server.

How do we know you're not going to configure your friends computer to e-mail
you *his* dynamic IP thus creating a small security risk?
