Try to disable the option "plau and play OS" in your Bios, that did it for me,
else you could try to disable the PnP option with the driver disk
(3c5x9cfg.exe)
Kind regards,

Hello,
I have a RTL 8139 Fast Ethernet Adapter Card and RedHat 5.2 in my PIII
box. I recompiled the kernel to include the driver for RTL 8139.
Everything, including the network, works fine during the first few
moment of machine startup. However, after a while, maybe about 15
minutes, I keep getting an error message on my screen.
eth0: Transmit timeout, status 0d 2000
sometimes I get
eth0: Transmit timeout, status 0d 0000 message.
I also have NT on my machine and everything works great and no complain
from NT. Anybody have any idea what the error message means?
Any advise is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Simon

Is this possible with Linux:
I would like to have one Linux box do NAT and firewalling, and another
as a Samba server for a workgroup of about 30 win95 clients. Is it
possible for a win95 user at home to access the Samba server through
their own ISP? Would the Linux firewalling box have to do some kind of
port forwarding? What are the "securest" ways to do such a crazy thing?

Subject: Configuration problem with xntp and Linux...
Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 10:37:12 +0200
Hello,
I try to use xntp on a Linux Box (RedHat 5.0, kernel 2.0.35). Under
Solaris have I any problem
to configure xntp, but under Linux, xntp does not work.
On the server, I wrote in /etc/ntp.conf :
# Serveur de l'heure locale
server 127.127.1.0
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 0
# Historique
logfile /var/log/xntpd
# Deviation moyenne
driftfile /etc/ntp/drift
# Statistiques
statsdir /var/ntp/
statistics loopstats peerstats clockstats
filegen loopstats file loopstats type day enable
filegen peerstats file peerstats type day enable
filegen clockstats file clockstats type day enable
# Dialogue reseau
broadcast 194.214.104.127
restrict default notrust lowpriotrap nomodify
restrict 194.214.104.127 mask 255.255.255.128 nomodify
disable auth
'ntptrace' returns:
localhost: stratum 1, offset -0.000010, synch distance 0.01067, refid
'LCL'
It seems to be correct...
On the clients, I wrote:
# Historique
logfile /var/log/xntpd
# Deviation moyenne
driftfile /etc/ntp/drift
# Statistiques
statsdir /var/ntp/
statistics loopstats peerstats clockstats
filegen loopstats file loopstats type day enable
filegen peerstats file peerstats type day enable
filegen clockstats file clockstats type day enable
# Dialogue reseau
broadcastclient
broadcastdelay 0.008
disable auth
And a 'ntptrace' always returns:
localhost: stratum 16, offset 0.000001, synch distance 1.15657
0.0.0.0: *Timeout*
Why? The network works fine.
I have tried to see the dialog on the port 123 with a 'tcpdump host
aboulafia and port 123',
but this command returns anything.
'ifconfig' on server returns:
Root Aboulafia:[~] > ifconfig

(une sur chaque port srie), RH5.0 patche (noyau 2.0.35) et xntp
version 3 (de
la RH5.2).
I have tried to replace the broadcast with a simple call to server,
but
the result is the same...
Can you help me?

PS: can you send me your answer in the news and by mail?

To be completely honest, I can't answer your question directly...
Usually, the kernel is compiled with the following invocations:
make mrproper;make clean;make dep;
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
The last step copies the newly compiled modules to the proper place
in /lib/modules. Now, you should adjust your /etc/lilo.conf, rerun
lilo, and reboot with your new kernel. Then an 'insmod via-rhine'
will probably work. In other words, I don't know what will happen
if you specify a full path to the module in hope that it will fit
in OK with the existing kernel.
If you had RedHat 5.2, a kernel recompilation was not necessary
anyway; the via-rhine driver was already compiled as a module, and
should be somewhere in the directory tree of /usr/lib/modules-2.0.36-7.
Try just adding the line
alias eth0 via-rhine
to your /etc/conf.modules file, so that the driver is loaded on
startup; you should see in the initial startup messages that the
ethernet card is recognized.

Some DSL modems/routers/whatever they're called will actually
do IP masquerading for you. See if you can set your systems
to use the DSL modem IP address as a gateway. In these cases
the DSL router will typically have a 192.168.* IP address
on its ethernet interface, and a real IP on its WAN interface.
You might also be able to set up NAT to allow incoming services
to your network. Check your docs for your DSL modem if you
want this feature.

Subject: HELP token ring
Here I go again,
I have an IBM PS/2 9595. I have successfully installed Slackware
Linux 3.6 (Linux version 2.1.125)
I have installed the network software. I have made the changes to
the rc.inet1. I tried loading the new 2.1.125 modules for token ring.
I have tried a microchannel IBM Auto 16/4 Token Ring Adapter, an IBM
16/4 Token ring Adapter, and an IBM Auto LAN Streamer. The
AutoLanStreamer doesn't want to work at all.
The 16/4 Token ring adapters do get acknowledged, but I keep getting
the repeating message tr0: open failed: ret_code=30, retrying.
One the 16/4 token ring, after loading the modules for Linux 2.1.125, it
does also have the error message something like tr1: unable to install
on irq 9...or something to that nature.
From what I have read, it is possible to get at least one of these
working.
for those who asked before,
Yes, the card does work under DOS and WindowsXXXXXX
Yes, it is connected to an active Token ring lan connection. It worked
as an OS/2 server before in the same spot with the LAN Streamer card.
Yes, the cards work, they were tested on other computers under DOS and
WindowsXXXX
Any suggestions appreciated greatly

I'm trying to configure the trafic shape under linux but when I'm trying
to configure
it with shapecfg it complains saying unable to configure device. I load
before the
module.
The distribution is the SUSE 6.0, I've tried it with the kernel 2.0.36
and kernel 2.2.0pre7.
I don't know where to find information (the kernel documentation and the
howtos
have little about it).
What can I do?

Is this being caused by a reverse DNS lookup digging up a hostname
for your 192.168.1.X address?
Some one (iana.net) could have registered the private address ranges
with a telltale dummy hostname.
