Subject: two problems with netatalk (SuSE 5.3)
Date: Sun, 18 Jul 1999 19:52:51 +0200

Today I finally found some time to install SuSE Linux 5.3 (I know, its
old - my PC is older ;-). I want to install CVS Server that I need to
access from a Macintosh. So I decided to install the predefined "Devel1"
configuration and added only netatalk.

Linux runs, but I have two strange network effects.

a) the two machines do not communicate via TCP/IP. Pinging each other
   does not work.
b) netatalk works, but it takes 40 seconds until a volume gets mounted.

Maybe those problems are related, maybe not. Since I am completely new
to any UNIX, I feel somehow lost.

Some infos:

a)
the linux machine is 192.168.6.1, the Mac 192.168.6.2. No connection to
any other network yet. According to the info in SuSE's support database,
the configuration is ok. ifconfig returns very well looking data,
interrupt and IO address are ok. Pinging itself and the loopback device
works.

starting/stopping netatalk does not matter. Enabling/disabling AppleTalk
on the Mac does not help, either.

b)
during the 40 second wait the Mac (G3, German OS 8.6) is frozen. TCP/IP
is always active. When using the chooser to select the linux server, I
get a barber pole dialog called "Verbindungsstatus" (something like
"connection state" in English, I hope). Text inside: "UEberpruefen von:"
("checking:") with no indication what it is going to check, running
forever. If I cancel, I briefly see "reverting to AppleTalk", then I
wait for those 40 seconds. After that, it works.

If I manually add the server's TCP/IP address via the chooser, it gets
shown after "checking" in the dialog mentioned above. Besides that, it
does not make any difference.

The Mac, the cabling and my PC's Ethernet Card are ok: when running NT
4.0 on the PC everthing works fine.

Any ideas?

Bernd.

Subject: Dead daemons?
Date: Sun, 18 Jul 1999 18:11:12 GMT

I've got a box that I administrate in California (this summer,
I'm in Missouri). It's running kernel 2.2.9 and Slackware 3.5
(heavily modified). I telnet in occasionally (once a day or
so) to make sure everything's more or less kosher, and logfiles
get rotated and emailed to me very night.

A few days ago, the box wasn't responding to telnet or ftp
connections, but ping and apache were still working. I
figured inetd had somehow stopped responding, and remembered
that we had installed 'sshd' after the fact, and that it
was running from /etc/rc.d/rc.local, so I was able to get
in using secure shell. Sure enough, inetd was not listed
among the processes when I did a ps -aux. So, as root,
I fired it back up, and all was well.

Now, yesterday, the messages file that arrived in my inbox
was completely blank (unheard of, even in the summer; there
are always people POP'ing in to check mail, etc), so
I telnetted in to find syslogd not running. No problem,
I su'd to root and fired it back up, and /var/log/messages
is growing accordingly.

But now I'm troubled. What would cause two more or less
reliable pieces of an otherwise rock-solid system (54 days
of uptime since the last time a power outage extended
beyond our UPS capacity) to fail? The rest of the machine
is running normally, and no bizarre error messages have
appeared anywhere (debug, etc).

If anyone has any ideas... Thanks!

- Chris

We have got a new domain name and a mail server that collects email for that
domain. The mail server provides us with a single username<domain> that
collects all email for <user>@<domain>.co.uk

I want to set up a linux box that will dial the internet, log on to the
account and collect all email and distribute it to the user on the dial-up
box or send the email to postmaster if the user does not exist.

What are the possible alternatives for setting this up ?
I am trying to use fetchmail, and set up a local email server, but I just
can't seem to get configuration right.

Depending on your MTA. Because mail is usually routed by DNS lookups. In
smail for example you can add a "force-path" entry to route the mail for the
domain to the exchange server. Anaother option would be to set up your DNS
to point to the exchange (primary) and the linux gateway (secondary) but
this should only be done if the exchange is directly reachable and you want
to receive mail that way.

Subject: How to permanent add route command to startup sequence?
Date: 18 Jul 1999 18:50:18 GMT

I need to add the following command to my startup sequence
so that I can print to my networked HP 4000N printer. My
current procedure is to execute this command as root after
logging in:

route add -host 192.0.0.192 eth0

This command adds the print server to the PC's routing
table. I would prefer not to have to execute this command
everytime I login.

I have tried adding this command via netcfg but with no
success. It is not clear to me why this command is necessary
since other people who I have talked to with a similar setup
do not need to execute this command to access their HP 4000N
printer. Why doesn't Linux (routed) automatically detect the
print server?

I am using Red Hat 6.0.

ummm... did you note the part of your error message complaining about irq
255 not being valid ( or very likely). try booting linux without any nic
drivers in the kernel and manually loading the nic driver with an explicitly
declared irq setting.
ie:
/sbin/modprobe 3c509 irq = 10 ( or whatever) ( do this as root)

You would need a tcp/ip terminal server, a hardware device that would likely
cost more than the linux box and terminal combined.

Or, you could just plug the terminal into a serial port on the linux box...

Hi, I'm kind of new to using Linux so bear with me here.
I recently installed RedHat6 on a P75 system. For some reason when I
tried to print the howto's and faq's over the network, my printer
started spitting out blank pages - so use samba to transfer select
files to my windows system for printing. I noticed that it would only
send at about 10Kbytes/s. When I was transferring downloaded files
from my windows system it was going at speeds in excess of
600Kbytes/sec. I have a 3c595 10/100 PCI ethernet card for the
internal network. If you know what to do, please help. Thanx.

I have a small home LAN consisting of 1 Linux box (router/print

1 win95 client, and 1Linux terminal used for web and e-mail access.
Everything works fine except Diald. It is almost to efficient! It seems
that my windows box pings every 4-5 minutes looking for
conformation(whats my name and where is my lunch kit!) I use my ISP DNS
because that is the only way I could get everything to work. According
to "tcpdump" when win95 calls, the router (Linux) directs diald to make
the connection. Information is exchanged and win 95 goes home happy? I
am new to networking so if I over looked the obvious please bear with

I am sure if this diald thing keeps up, my wife will have my backs

Anytime taken to help would be greatly appreciated...

Phoneline ethernet cards which use the AMD PcNet 32 card are supported
by linux as of either 2.2.7 or 2.2.8. These include the Diamond Homefree
Phone line cards, and probably others (look at the big chip in the
middle and see if there is an AMD logo on it).

To activate. Just recompile your kernel with AMD PcNet32 (VLB and PCI)
support, and run.

Well here's the problem. When I installed Redhat and tried to autodetect my
NIC it only detected the network interface on the motherboard which I can't
use because this case wouldn't let the panel with an opening for the RJ-45
jack plug into it. So now I'm trying to configure my PCI D-Link card after
Linux has been installed. I feel like such a newbie trying to do this, I've
tried to use linuxconf and netcfg to make this work but to no avail. I'm
going off to school soon and it would be incredibly great if I could access
the school network in Linux rather than being forced to work in..win98. If
someone could please give me some lucid, almost hand-holding instructions
that would be great.

I had a 33KB Supra modem that worked fine for my ppp connection
to my ISP. About the same time I upgraded to RH 6 and a 56K modem
from US Robotics. My ppp performance went to crawl. Once in a
blue moon I'd get decent speeds but for most of the time the
front panel lights show no activity for 10s of seconds instead of
constant blinking like on the slower Supra.

Changing back to the Supra modem shows the same performance I
had previously. Good but not great. But this leave me to believe
that my problems are with the USR 56K modem, not the ppp setup
or the new RH 6 software.

What modem init string should I be using for the 56K modem and are
there any other operating or configuration tips that will help me
get the full use of this modem.

Thanx in advance for all suggestions.

Yes, the program is called fetchmail and should be installed by default,
but it's easy to find. It is installed by default on RH5.x and 6.x for

resorv.conf is set up as wurd instructs also. It looks like I never get to
authenticate myself and ppp on the isp side never starts.
It looks like I keep sending LCP ConfReq's -- does that mean that my PPP is
asking the ISP to authenticate itself? I did specify the 'noauth' option
(see the script).
Can the linux installation (libraries, etc...) be too old??
The modem works (I tried dialing in minicom). PLEASE HELP!

I have the same problem. I found out that diald and ipmasq are not
working together. When diald connects or disconnects it changes the
routing and a new ipmasq (rule change) must be run to enable ip
masquerating again.

I am trying to edit the diald connect and disconnect scripts so the
rules change when (dis)connected or a route is changed.

The ppp option of ipmasq doesn't work with me.

Subject: Block specific IP with ipchains?
Date: Sun, 18 Jul 1999 20:49:27 GMT

I am on a corporate network with 5 of my buddies
running redhat 6.0. At times someone will
occasionally export DISPLAY=<my IP> and launch
xsnow or xmelt or something. I want to be able to
block all traffic from their IP addressess while
allowing me to contact them if necessary. I have
installed ipchains and used the following command

ipchains -A input -s 90.14.153.5 -d 90.14.152.92
-j DENY

This will not allow connections from 90.14.153.5
but it also prevents me from contacting that IP
from my box. I think because I am using one nic
card instead of the traditional two cards and a
dedicated firewall server it won't allow traffic
like I want it to. Is there a way to block
connections from a specific IP while allowing
connections to that IP with only one nic card?
