I have Samba working and all, but when logging in to my Windows 98 machine,
I get a message that says "No Domain Server could be reached to validate
password. You may be unable to access certain networking disks". Does
anyone know of a way to keep Windows from searching for a DNS server? It
would really speed up the boot time for Windows. (As if Windows boot time
could get any longer :-)
I would prefer to make a fix on the Windows machine rather than make
changes to Linux, but I'm open to suggestions either way.
Thanks,
Jay

i want to set up a firewall with SuSE linux, and was wondering if
IP_FORWARDING has to be activated or not. Does it forward blindly or is it
affected by the packet filtering of the firewall itself?

Can anyone cite a reference for the codes TPC uses to name equipment?
SNDG70H1R1 for San Diego 70 something 1 something router 1, etc... I've
never seen a formula but phone company equipment always seems to be named so
effectively yet concisely. Heck calling all nifty naming schemes scaling

Hi
I tried something I had seen mentioned elsewhere.
I added an exclude irq 5 line to my /etc/pcmcia.config.opts file.
Rebooted with both SCSI and ethernet and it worked first time.
Seems something else must have been grabbing irq 5.
Try and and let me know.

I am having difficulty figuring out NFS. I want to mount the /
directory of interloper to /interloper on solo. man nfs and man
exports hasn't been very helpful.
Can anyone post an example /etc/exports and /etc/fstab file
that does this? Are there any other files I need to be concerned
with? Solo is in interloper's hosts.equiv file.
When I do the mount -a command, this is the error I get:

This is my /etc/fstab file on solo:

This is my /etc/exports file on interloper:

Forgive me if I am incorrect in my understanding on how and when EACH
is USED for what purpose. But this is what I understand so far.
IPMASQADM, can succesfully forward traffic on any given port or groups
of ports on an external INTERFACE depending on what module you use in
IPMASQADM (portfw, or others..) to any interface on any Internal
machine. BUT all packets that are forwarded are shown as coming from
the ORIGINAL source, NOT the firewall you setup to forward them on.
IPCHAINS can forward ports, but ONLY on internal ports to internal
hosts.
The man who writes IPMASQADM has a FAQ on his site that is really
confusing me:
http://juanjox.linuxhq.com/redir-vs-portfw.txt
Its called, port redirection: USER VS KERNEL
IPMASQADM using PORTFW being what is the 'KERNEL' method
WHAT is the USER method he is refereing to? I can not figure ANY WAY
to succesfully forward traffic on port 80 coming in from outside the
firewall to an internal WEB SERVER port 80, without using IPMASQADM!
The problem is, IPMASQADM works, BUT it is NOT changing the packets so
they are shown as coming from the firewall that forwarded them. This
is actually a good feature to have for certain applications. But this
one I really dont need that feature. (Because of an internal router
that has a static route set to route ALL NON private network based
traffic to a completly DIFFERENT firewall - Which happens to be
running SQUID on it that accepts proxy request on PORT 80) so that
iterferes with the traffic going back out cause it hits the internal
web server then takes the static route back out attempting to go
through the other firewall and stops. I guess I could define some
static routes on the web server that info is being forwarded to, but I
would really like to avoid this.
I also do understand by changing the packet source that is forwarded
on adds load to the firewall because it has to keep track of those
connections to reply on, etc.. That's fine, if wingate can do XXX
simultaneous users, then its alsmost guaranteed linux would do XXX x 3
on a lower speed box =)
If I can just figure out a simple way, kinda like WINGATE for winblows
has the ability to forward inbound traffic on a given port to an
internal host on any given port, BUT it also forwards the info on as
coming from the wingate host itself, so all return traffic goes
directly back through the wingate on its way out.
Sorry for the long message, if anyone that is very knowledgable about
this and knows that you can do what I am saying with IPCHAINS please
tell me!
I am really assuming there is some way to do it without using
IPMASQADM and a way to do it with. Again according to this comparison
chart at : http://juanjox.linuxhq.com/redir-vs-portfw.txt I would
think there was.
Please email a response also if possible :)
Thanks!

I set up TCP/IP printing using Red Hat 4.2 to an HP JetDirect that was
configured for TCP/IP printing and it went pretty easily.
If you have X set up and working, login as root, start x and use the

At 91, my grandfather got a computer because he wanted to know
what all the hullaballoo was about. I'm sad he died (aged 94)
before the Internet boom, because he would have enjoyed USENET.
Up to his last moments, he had a very lucid and flexible mind -
he enjoyed learning new things and discussing a wide variety
of subjects. Age, sex, looks - it the mind that really matters.

It doesn't ask for a DNS server but for a login server. SAMBA can be
configured as a login server.
