After reading Bob's post after a long while, that becomes obviose. I would
kill-file him, except that his posts allow me to get a few laughs without
having to go over to rec.humor.funny.
He seems to think that all that is needed for everyone to use Linux is for
Linux to be "just like Windows" As much as he hates Linux, I wonder why he
keeps trying to "give" "advice" to the linux crowd. I imagine that if Linux
were ever to be "just like Windows" he would be over here complaining about
how no one would use Linux. Why? Why would you switch just to end up with
what you had now?
So keep it coming Bob, I need those chuckles.

Subject: Re: Cable modem and IP Masquerading

Could one of you help me review the process in a some detail? I'm installing
RH5.2 now and want to make sure I know where I'm going with this:
- 2 NICs in Linux box, 1 to hub, 1 to DHCP (bidirectional) cablemodem.
- Linux box configs one NIC to obtain DHCP address with cablemodem.
- Linux box sets static IP (192.168.0.x) on other NIC
- 'Other' OS boxes set static IPs (192.168.0.n) on their NICs and connect to
the hub.
- ipfwadm and ipmasqadm programs are used to allow all 192.168.0.n computers
to access http and most other protocols directly and transparently. Linux
keeps track of who made what requests and redirects packets accordingly?
BTW, hows the net performance when doing this? Will a 486 linux box with 2
ISA NICs be a latency bottleneck for the windows PC's connected to it? I'll
eventually run it on something much faster, but this is my test rig.
Second, is one able to run a DHCP arrangement on the internal network, too?
I thought that their might be configuration difficulties with ipsmasqadm if
I didn't know the IPs of the participating machines ahead of time...
Thanks.

Hi
I have a mini-network with PLIP (2 PCs,Lise and Sara).
rlogin works without problem, but when I want to use xmgr or
pgdisp,I try to use a remote display by doing either:
setenv DISPLAY Sara:0.0 or setenv DISPLAY Lise:0.0
The command is accepted;the DISPLAY variable is set but Xlib
returns:
Xlib: connection to "Sara:0.0" refused by server
Xlib:client is not authaurized to connect to server
Error:Cann't open display: Sara:0.0
And the same for the other PC.
On a single PC setenv DISPLAY localhost:0.0 works, but
setenv DISPLAY Sara:0.0 does not.
rcp does not work
ftp works in only one direction
Help! Thank you

Subject: nt cannot browse network (samba)
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 12:22:36 GMT
setting up samba on a linux-machine in a workgroup (at this experimental
state : one linux-machine, one nt-machine) leads me to a strange problem:
when I want to browse the network in nt-explorer I dont see any computer
(even not the nt-machine itself) but the workgroup. when I try to open
the workgroup, I get something like this :
you cannot logon to workgroup with this account
but when I look for the samba-machine or the nt-machine (in explorer :
extra/search/computer) I find them both an can open the shares !!
I can also mount the shares with the net use - command.
So this seems to be only a browsing-problem.
I set up linux as master-browser for this workgroup (cause the nt-machine
is rebootet very often) with the following global-section in smb.conf
(I tried both : using wins and not)
[global]
guest account = nobody
log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
lock directory = /var/lock/samba
share modes = yes
workgroup = MYGROUP
#wins support = yes
#wins proxy = yes
local master = yes
preferred master = yes
os level = 64
name resolve order = host
in NT I just set the workgroupname and when I tried to use linux as wins-
server in the smb.conf I did also in NT.
and I also tried to enabled the plainpassword-option on nt to make sure,
that this is no encryption-problem.
there is one fact that makes me think, that this is a NT-problem :
why can I not see the nt-machine itself in the network in nt-explorer.
this cannot be just a samba-problem !?

If you can find out his IP number, you can block that address (or the
whole subnet, if he's got a dynamic IP), or find out who his provider
is (nslookup, dig etc.) and send a complaint to abuse@his-isp or
hostmaster@his-isp or something similar.

Hi I have a linux server with samba for a small network.
Once in a while it connects to internet with for mailing
and webbing.
When it happens, the internal network slows a lot.
It takes a loooong time to establish a connection with
the server when the ppp is loaded.
In the server I have not defined default route, I have
it set in the pppd.
I have inside the network 10.10.0.0/255.255.255.0 and the
router for this network is eth0.
What am I doing wrong ?

You actually need to redirect the packets that come in from the outside
world to you PC behind the firewall.
Have a look at http://www.ox.compsoc.org.uk/~steve/portforwarding.html
you will need to know which port the CIV2 games uses and redirect any
incoming packets to the machine which runs the game.

I remember reading an overview a while back of using the SCSI bus as a

And if so are there any drivers for it about ? Web sites etc ?
I'm just asking because with Ultra-2 SCSI you could make a very quick

Any ideas anyone ?

Type "ifconfig" at the command line and see if it has an entry for
"ppp0" anywhere. If not, then a connection is not being established.
Please remove all entries from /var/adm/messages and /var/adm/debug,
dial into your ISP as you have been trying, and post the resulting
/var/adm/messages and /var/adm/debug file to this newsgroup (you can
email them to me directly if you want). Before posting them, be sure to
REMOVE your username and password from the log files (put something else
in their place like "[username]" and "[password]" as place keepers.
Also in /usr/sbin/ppp-on (or whatever script you use to dial), set
kdebug 1 in the pppd command so the kernel sends debugging information.

Try getting the newest Samba 2.0 for one thing. Then point your browser in
Linux or Win98 clients to
http://servername:901
Then punch in your root account username and password, and admin away. You
should have your win98 client change from shared-level access to user
level. And have your account name authenticated on the linux server.

Subject: Local DNS
Date: 19 Jan 1999 14:53:47 GMT
I've got a Redhat Linux 5.2 server with several Windows and Linux clients.
The Linux server is connected to the Internet through a modem and the
clients connect to the Internet through IP masquerading. I want the
clients to pretend the server is the company's actual email server, ie,
companyname.com. So they send and receive all email from it, and it sends
and receives to and from the Internet, and doesn't just act as a router.
I'd like to also setup a DNS so when *real* dns requests go to the server,
it goes to the Internet and gets the actual address, EXCEPT for
companyname.com, which I'd like it to intercept and say "oh it's this".
Yet companyname.com actually exists out on the Internet somewhere else.
Then the clients can pickup their mail from companyname.com whether their
computers (and laptops) are connected internally or elsewhere.
So where should I begin looking? I'd like to maybe start with the DNS
setup.

What kind of routes do you have setup in Linux? And how are they
connected? I assume with not just a patch cable. You need a crossover for
that.
Can each computer ping itself?

I spent about a week trying to get my PCMCIA network card to work under linux,
to no avail. Finally, I realized that the sticker that was on the _top_ side
of the card in the manual was on the _bottom_ side of my actual card, and vice
versa. Turned it around (it was much easier to insert then, too.... What idiot
designed PCMCIA in such a way that you could insert the card upside down in
the first place?), and voila, it worked instantly.
