Subject: connect() hangs mysteriously
Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 08:15:56 GMT
Hi. I have been experiencing the following very strange problem with
2.2.6 (and also previous kernels):
Sometimes (my guess is when there are a lot of connect() calls
simultaneously.. 30-40 perhaps) connections die very strangely _after_
that: you can't establish any TCP connection anymore. Only rebooting
works. ICMP works fine; I think UDP also works (or else I have a
really big dns cache).
Might this be a kind of anti-DOS or something?
II have two NIC's, one for the private lan (eth1; 192.168.1.2) and one
for the net (eth0; 130.233.25.176). For some reason, all connections
from the server _seem_ to use 192.168.1.2 address.. Wouldn't it be
much wiser to use eth0's IP address? Is there a way to change that?
Also, I'm using Ipchains 1.3.8, and I think this might be (partly) a
masquerading/forwarding problem.
As it happens, every connection from my masqueraded Win98 box works
fine despite the server having difficulties: only exceptions are those
that use identd (which is run on the server) or similar applications..
But this only slows it down a bit, doesn't disable connections
entirely.
So, the only thing affected seems to be connections from the server
which _seem_ use the local lan address to connect to remote sites.
If I take the local lan interface down with ifconfig after the crash,
it still doesn't work.
Does anyone have _any_ idea where to look for the problem or to fix
it? This is getting very frustrating.
Here are some, hopefully relevant, parts of 'strace ftp ftp.funet.fi':
[192.168.1.2 int nic, 130.233.25.176 ext nic, 128.214.248.6

Notes: the non-working version freezes at connect() to ftp.funet.fi
Otherwise there doesn't seem to be much difference.

Seems like you need port forwarding. You need to have one computer with
two network cards, one connected to the internet and one connected to
the rest of your computers. This computer has one real IP address and
one 192.168.1.X address. You need to forward all relevant requests to
your real ip address to the 192.168.1.56 computer. However, this will
appear to have the IP address of the one that is directly connected to
the internet.
Read some howtos, for example net-3-howto, firewalling-howto,
ipchains-howto (if kernel > 2.2.0) and ip-masquerading-howto. I guess
you'll need the kernel-howto as well to prepare your kernel for
masquerading if you haven't already.
Hope this helps!

Okay, I'm just a newbie at this so please don't flame me if I'm wrong.
That said, if you want to allow root to be able to ftp into your server
just remove "root" from the /etc/ftpusers list. WARNING, from what I've
read this would be a bad thing in that it would open up the possibility
of a security breach unless of course you're on an isolated network and
you trust all your users ;-)

NT probably uses encrypted passwords intead of clear-text ones earlier
versions of Win95 and Win3.1x used.
Try reading samba documentation about creating an encrypted passwords
file and enabling encrypted passwords in smb.conf.

Yes, but you don't really need to do that. The linux box will work just
fine without being plugged in to the network -- it will see its network
card and have an IP address and all that, it just won't be able to talk
to anything over the 10baseT (obviously).
Also, if you use a modem while at home, you won't have any problems
there either. Just use the netconfig to make the PPP interface the
default route (rather than making the 10baseT the default route) and
everything will continue to work.

It sounds as if you haven't compiled IP Masq support into your kernel.
You need to configure and build a kernel with that support built in.
The ipfwadm commands won't work otherwise.

Well, the main server has a non-private IP address and two ethernet cards
as you explained above. So 192.168.1.1 is "live" on the internet. The
other computers (192.168.1.x) are obviously firewalled and art on the
intranet.
So, supossing 192.168.1.1 was called www.company.com, and 192.168.1.52 was
a computer called waller. I basically want waller.company.com onto the
internet.
Is this possible? (Redhat 5.2 with kernel 2.2.6)
Thanks for all the help.

No, though some documents still do mention that a 0 network number is
not allowed (including MS' own TCP/IP instructions, at least, that's
what I've seen in the past) . There's no problem with a 192.168.0.x
network address at all, unless you're running _very_ obsolete networking
programs .

Avoid using the 0 as a host address, just to be on the safe side.

Better way: check the markings on chipsets. Then try to find
something relevant with grep in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net.
The dumb way: compile every possible network driver as module and load
all of them. Some driver might find the network card.
