I've just got three lowly computers on my network: lilo (the
inspiration), paco and filo. I could probably go on for quite a while
with this little motif: micro, nano, pico, taco, rocco, nico, zippo.
Makes the daunting heaps of metal and plastic seem a little cuter and
more bearable.

Ethernet Adapter Card Problem Description

Note: it does not matter what IP address is used.
I have done everything I can think of, and have read and re-read
the ethernet how-to. I am following the how-to suggestion to post
my problem. I think that I have included all the pertinent facts
below.
I think I might have a bad card, but before I toss it ...
Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Card facts
===============================
The card is an Identity (brand) by Systems Technology, Inc.
Model no. is IDLAN16-E2
Described as 16bit Coax Ethernet Adapter, NE2000 adapter compatible,
10Mbps.
Using the software configuration capability, the base I/O address
was set at 0x0280 and irq 11, with boot rom disabled and turbo mode
disabled. Adapter mode set to NE2000.
Relevant output from dmesg:
==========================
ne.c:v1.10 9/23/94 Donald Becker ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

eth0: NE2000 found at 0x280, using IRQ 11.
Network cable connections
==========================
The card is connected to a thin coax cable that is terminated at
both ends. In the past, I have found that this is sufficient to
establish the viability of a card. So I regard it as incidental
that the other end of the cable is connected to another PC, and
that the ethernet card on that PC works.

Hi,
I am running Caldera Linux 1.3 connected to a small network of NT4 and
Win 95.
Firstly, I tried an ethernet card on the linux machine with the rtl8139
chip on it but, although the connection from the NT and 95 machines was
instant (viewed through netstat -tc), for those machines to recieve data
back from the linux box tooks ages, to the extent that in most instances
the NT and 95 machines would time out.
I have now tried a 3com ethernet III and this seems to have sped things
up a bit, but, does anyone have any experiences of real fast network
cards and could they let me know which cards they were.
Many thanx

Hello!
I just wanna get some response to this:
Is there a way that the ISP can make your cable modem "respond" to only one
NIC ? (checks the MAC-address)
I have been in contact with a couple of dudes, and they say that that might be
the reason why I can't use my newly-bougth NIC. Hence I must use my old one.
anyone have any experience with this?
I am gonna run some tests, and I'll get back to ya'all! :-)

For what it's worth, I hacked the /sbin/ifup script to detect the
kernel version and either add a route (for 2.0 monitors and below) or
not to (for 2.2 and above).
Perhaps this was the wrong place, but I've never been one to dig
into the doco until I was well painted into a corner....

Look at the time stamps. There is a 19 second delay between the time
the modem commands are sent and the time the OK from the modem is
received. It should be no more than one second.
This means that the IRQ configured in Linux for the modem's device file is
not the IRQ that the modem actually uses. Configuration is usually done
at boot-up by setserial in a in /ect/rc.* . Doing "setserial /dev/ttySx"
will tell you the configured IRQ, where ttySx is the modem device file.
Determining the IRQ the modem actually uses is up to you.

This is the worse problem. Look at the timestamps, there is a 19 second
delay between the time AT is sent and the modem response OK is received.
It should be less than one second.

: I momentarily digress from the log, to point out a side issue (though
: it may be the real problem in my case). Note the significant delay
: (~19 sec) from the time the log shows "sent (AT^M)" and the time the
: modem apparently notices it. All the commands are this way,
You did notice it, I didn't read far enough.

You need to edit the /etc/smb.conf file. Samba sets the workgroup to mygroup.
Change it to what you want, and save it.

I can ping from Win95 to linux and vice versa. /etc/hosts file on both
machines are set up correctly because I can ping using the machine names
rather than the IP address. The interesting part is that I have WINNT 4 in a
dual boot on my Win95 machine with the same IP address, machine name, etc.
and Samba works fine with WIN NT. I'm using the same linux box. This tells
me that I'm missing something on the Win95 setup. I don't know what else I
should look at on Win95.

Subject: Firewall logging and ipchains?
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Matt Siemens)
Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 18:39:29 GMT
Hi,
I'm looking for a way to log everything hitting my firewall (accepted, denied
and rejected packets), but I can't figure out how to do this. I've been
playing around with ipchains and I am able to log specific rules, but I can't
seem to log the actions of a default policy. For example:
ipchains -A input DENY
ipchains -A input -i eth0 -p tcp -s 0.0.0.0/0 -d 1.2.3.4/32 80 -l -j ACCEPT
Let's say these are the firewall rules I'm using. If someone tries to connect
to the firewall (1.2.3.4/eth0) from the internet, via the web (port 80), they
are able to do so and the connection is logged as accepted, hence the '-l'
switch. But, if someone from the net tries to connect using ftp, they are
denied access (as per the default input policy) but this transaction does not
seem to make it into my system logs. How can I log traffic that is being
filtered by a default policy in ipchains? Can I use ipchains to do
firewall logging, or is there a better solution?
I'm using Red Hat 5.2 with kernel 2.2.3 which is configure to run as a
firewall. I've been reading howto papers all day, but I can't seem to find
anything that specifically deals with firewall logging.
Any info or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

want to be able to put multiple LaserWriters on the network so that my other

goal is this is to get the jobs off of the local macs so that they can get back

I know that part of the setup has to do with the papd.conf file and probably
