Hello,

Can anybody tell me how to assign a certain value (^[[29~ to be exact)
to one of the function keys in a gnome terminal on REDHAT6.0. everytime
I press it now it gives the value ^[[24~. I'ver tried to edit the
/etc/inputrc file but that didn't help.

Thanx.

RTFM - DejaNews ...!

But the thing important to make it work is

> ipchains -A forward -j MASQ

that is ... if you feel brave. Firewalling from there becomes
more tedious ...

Yeah and it's called NT. Thus the term "NT-weanies" for people who are clever
enough to come up with questions like this ...

If you want to use e.g default.htm as directory defaut, edit the
/etc/httpd/conf/srm.conf file, and set it like below (add and remove options
as you like).

# DirectoryIndex: Name of the file or files to use as a pre-written HTML
# directory index. Separate multiple entries with spaces.
DirectoryIndex index.html index.shtml index.cgi index.htm default.htm
default.ht
ml

Good Luck!

I'm new to the list, and haven't seen anything posted about this yet...

I have an old Packard Hell machine which i want to add to my existing
network, but I need to do it through a serial port. It's running an
extremely shaved down version of RedHat 6.0, has a Pentium 63, with no
floppy drive, no cd-rom drive, an 800 meg harddrive, and has 4 megs of
ram. a network admin's nightmare right -- once booted, it actually runs
alright.

the other computers on my network are a windows 98 machine, and a
windows98/redhat 6.0 machine. i am mainly concerned with netorking it
with the dedicated windows machine so that it can have internet access.

i've never actually got samba to work under linux, and not sure if i will
even require it. can someone help me with this, or point me in the right
direction? i wouldn't mind having it networked through a parallel port
either, if anyone knows how to do that.

Subject: nfs && "svc: unknown version" and "svc: unknown program..." error on RH6.0
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 06:16:18 GMT

I have an nfs server and client running on a RH 6.0 system. The
following messages were generated by having one of the other systems
(a Sun) automount this system's file system through nfs. Does anyone
have any idea why I get this error message? I've done a man -K search
through the manpages for references to 'svc' to find things related to
nfs that have that in it and I get library calls. Is this something
that could be solved by upgrading to the lasted 6.0 rpms from RH? I've
done all of them except the kernel (which I was saving because I
wanted to experiment on my home machine first, rather than this one).

The errors (outputed to the console and logged in /var/log/messages):

Jul 20 08:00:38 <linuxhost> kernel: svc: unknown version (3)
Jul 20 08:00:38 <linuxhost> mountd[410]: export request from <ip
address>
Jul 20 08:00:38 <linuxhost> mountd[410]: authenticated mount request
from <sun-hostname>:738
Jul 20 08:00:38 <linuxhost> kernel: svc: unknown program 100227 (me
100003)
Jul 20 08:00:38 <linuxhost> last message repeated 5 times
Jul 20 08:05:56 <linuxhost> kernel: svc: unknown version (3)
Jul 20 08:05:56 <linuxhost> mountd[410]: authenticated unmount request
from <hostname>:739

I'd appreciate any response, even if it doesn't explain these errors,
as it would probably expand my knowledge of linux and nfs.

I have been looking for an application that will display ethernet
traffic? I would really like GNOME applet. I have a cable modem so the
modem so the Modem and PPP applets are useless for me.

The best one I found was wmrxtx (X app that mimics the 3 ethernet
lights). It works fine but traffic speed would also be nice?

These are the correct rules

ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.2 -j MASQ
ipchains -A forward -p TCP -d 192.168.1.2 2000:2200 -j MASQ
ipchains -A forward -p UDP -d 192.168.1.2 4000 -j MASQ

The first rule denys all
second sets up basic MASQ rules
and the third and fourth let ICQ run correctly

You need to make copies of the last 3 rules for each machine changing the ip
to your setup.

Hi all,

I'm trying to install many e-mail virtual servers on the same Linux box:
one domain for each virtual server, and they should run in a fully
independent way.

Now I'm searching information about how to make it (I need a SMTP and a
POP3 servers that allow it, I've been looking the qpopper but it seems
not suporting it).

Could anybody help me, or tell me where can I get information about how
to build it?

You only have to check the permissions of the 'Ben Williams' Linux user, and
the definition of the share in /etc/smb.conf, I think. The share you see can
be in the [homes] section or any other share you have created, be sure it's
writable=yes, etc.

As I don't really understand very much of the things you said above, the
last
paragraph sounds best to me :-)....

But ,how can I set up a gateway???

Subject: Please help with routing problem
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 07:37:32 +0200

Hi,

Ive a problem since several days that i cant solve:

10.253.1.66 10.253.1.65 10.62.1.1
Linux ------> Ascend ----------> MVS Mainframe
             eth0 ISDN FDDI

The Subnet Mask betewwen the Linux Box and the Ascend
Router is 255.255.255.248, so the network address
should be 10.253.1.64 and the broadcast address
should be 19.253.1.71 ( I hope I calculated correctly).

The MVS Mainframe uses the subnetmask 255.255.0.0.

I configured the eth0 in the Linux box as follows:

ifconfig eth0 10.253.1.66 netmask 255.255.255.248 \
broadcast 10.253.1.71 up

and I set the roztings:

route add -net 10.253.1.64 netmask 255.255.255.248 eth0
route add -net 10.62.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 gw 10.253.1.65

Ok, then I added the following to /etc/hosts and /etc/networks:

# /etc/hosts
10.253.1.66 here.dialin.net
10.253.1.65 there.dialin.net
10.62.1.1 mvs.remote.net

# /etc/networks
remote.net 10.62.0.0
dialin.net 10.253.1.64

Ok, now the problem:
gateway:/home/sysadm # netstat -r

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt
Iface
10.253.1.64 * 255.255.255.248 U 1500 0 0
eth0
remote.net there.dialin.net 255.255.0.0 UG 1500 0 0
eth0

Hey, why netstat shows me 10.253.1.64 and not (as added to /etc/networks)
"dialin.net" ??? It seems like Linux wants to resolve the IP-Address
"10.253.1.64" and asks the DNS for the hostname - bad idea (ok, bad idea
for me) because a connection to our Internet Provider is established via
our ISDN-Line.....

I hope anyone can help me with this....

bye
  Michael

Subject: Newbie ? about hosting web page from home
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 07:43:46 GMT

Hi all, I need some advice on how to serve a web page from my home. I
don't expect much traffic so i'm assuming I can host a page through my
cable modem and the extra computer I have here. It's a pentium 100,
with 1gig hd, decent (read: cheap :) ) nic, has it's own ip, and will
have 32 or 48 megs of ram. Would that be enough for two low traffic
pages, one being an all text version of my page as well as a neeto
super-duper graphical page that will be using flash and other
interactive menus and such?
I'm also wondering which os I should run. I need it to be
really stable cause it'll be running only the webpage and I need to be
able to keep it on for long periods of time(only one monitor and I
have Beos and Win9x for my main oses on a seperate computer so I'm not
looking for an all around os). Also, does the os I use have bearing on
what others use to connect to my site? This I'm a bit confused on.
I'm very interested in having the server set up to handle connections
from different oses. I don't mind getting into the mud when it comes
to setting up os's. Just to let you know, last year I got linux up and
running with Be and Win9x on the same computer and drive, yay me! :)

What would be the most stable setup for me? One friend said
Linux with Apache or BSD with whatever he said, can't remember, what
do y'all think? (i'm not trolling, yes i've been reading that bsd,
linux, tcp/ip stack thread and I want you all to know that i'm not
trolling. I really don't care what os I run, I just want to know what
would be best for my situation)

Thanks,
jesse

P.S. will I need to setup a firewall? This is something I know little
about but I have this itchy feeling that it's necessary. Thanks
again.

I've gotten a recent tulip driver and compiled it. The new module loads
ok. Everything seems ok when I check route and ifconfig. I can ping my
own card, but I can't ping outside my card. There's no sign of any
network activity coming out of the card. I have a dual install with
Win98 and can use the interface card in windows with no problem, so I
assume the hardware is alright.

Thanks,
I have already configured my linux and works fine with two ethernet PCI
rtl8029 ne2000
compatible cards.

After a lot of reading, I resolved that to ping from one network to another
I have to set the
gateway entry for both networks. Correct?

Suppose that I have 3 computers A B and C
C: is my linux router with 2 ethernet cards connected to both networks.
A: belongs to network 1
B: belongs to network 2

If I want to ping from A to B I have to tell them to use C as gateway both
of them.
if I set only A to use gateway then it can sents packets to B but it can't
receive any. right???

Kostis .
