750. Many, if not most, kerberos5 KDCs listen on both ports 88 and 750.
Anyway, you want port 750 opened for UDP traffic, which probably will
not make your firewall folks happy (Most KDCs and clients don't
support TCP). If the firewall does network address translation, you're
in for even more trouble. The "Kerberos vs firewalls" Internet Draft
(http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-cat-krb5-firewalls-00.txt)
discusses some of the issues, but doesn't really provide solutions.

Big differences--kerberos5 is a much more mature protocol. There's
some backwards compatibility for kerberos5 KDCs to server k4 clients,
but truly paranoid sites turn that off to avoid the k4 vulnerabilties.

klogin uses TCP port 543. ktelnet and kftp use the standard telnet
and ftp ports.

Something like lsof will tell you about established connections, but
catching the UDP packets for the key exchange with the KDC wouldn't
be trivial. tcpdump would be a more appropriate tool.

comp.protocols.kerberos probably has a higher density of kerberos
gurus.

I have set up a Linux dial-in server. I can dial-in successfully from a Win95
machine and can browse the dial-in server. However, I can't access the LAN that
the server is connected to. I do have IPForwarding enabled, and have
"defaultroute" in the /etc/ppp/options file. Any ideas or can anyone point me
anywhere? I've been through a lot of documentation on the web, and still can't
get it to work.

"man tcpdump", check the -i option. If there is an error for ppp0 then
you need to upgrade tcpdump.

I think Webmin is the tool u are searching for.
You can administrate Samba with Netscape/IE from Remote.
You can get it at www.webmin.com.

All,
(Cross-posted as I'd like to ask users experienced with other Unix
systems as well.)
As of now, all the hosts on our network are accessible form
the Internet, with a Ciso router set to allow incoming packets only
from certain IP addresses, while allowing all outgoing packets.
The powers-that-be want us to add a PIX firewall before our
LAN, move all servers between the 2500 router and the PIX, and switch
from using open Internet addresses to the usual 192.168.0.0 addressing
plan. Iin other words, we'll now use IP Masquerading/NAT.
Are there drawbacks and side-effects to expect, eg. some
servers on the Net will no longer allow access because the host is not
"visible" from the outside? If yes, what kind of apps?
Thx for any info,
FF.

I have just purchased a Compaq Microcom 4000 Remote Access Concetrator. I am
running into difficulty getting it to work with mgetty.
Currently, I have two Total Control MP/16s and 24 USR Sportsters all working
perfectly with mgetty.
I have (3) 4 port analog modem cards in the 4000, andd I am using Comtrol
Rocket Ports for the serial port cards with the RJ45 Rack Mount interface. I
have checked with both Comtrol and Compaq as to the cabling between the two.
Both gave me the same answer, and the cables check out.
Using the software from Compaq, I can issue a string, "AT&FS0=0*W" - after
issuing this, the modem will answer fine, and authenticate perfectly.
However, after that connection is terminated, the modem will not answer
again. I am also getting the message "Apr 26 10:53:19 mp-ts pppd[5054]:
tcgetattr: I/O error"
If I manually enter the init string again, it'll work again, and again, only
once.
Anyone got any ideas on this?
TIA

Where do you find that "labeling option" info.
Also, the cool thing about linux is that if you share the directory where all
your CDs are mounted, then you have one mount point on the user's machine for
all your CDs. That allows users to search across your entire CD archive for
a file.{may or may not be something you want them to do, but it is cool none
the less!} Obviously, that would work in sub-directories too, to share out
different sets of CDs and such like.

After I upgraded to 5.2, I can't get the 3c509 drivers to find my 3com NIC.
I saw in another NG that the fact that it was in pnp mode was the problem,
followed the advice and it is now in ISA mode, no luck. I've tried to pass
this arguement: eth0: 3C509 at 0x300 tag1, 10baseT port address 00 60 08 xx
xx xx, IRQ 10. through the kernel at boot (xx = other characters as u know),
this still has not brought results. As a last resort I reinstalled 5.0 had
it set up the NIC and did the upgrade were I choose the packages, and did
not install the kernel information, and still I need to boot in to Windoze
to get on line. As a last measure, I might attempt to wipe out Windoze fully
as long as I know that this will not happen if Win. is not on this box, only
RH 5.2. I thank anyone for the assistence in advance.

Dave;
For all the various unix programs and utilities to work correctly, you
should use the FQD assigned by your ISP. Some ISP's alias your system
name in their look-up tables, so ask your ISP.
Some programs, netscape, will strip the header and add the return address
if you have asked it to. If you don't ask it to, it too will use the
host and domain names that are set up in your various networking files.
Since unix was developed from the start with networking in mind, it's
utilities were designed to take advantage of the built in networking.
Since OS's like Windozz had networking added on as an after thought,
most client programs had to be told what their network peramaters were.

Subject: Ethernet problem under Linux 2.2.6
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 12:50:08 -0700
Hello,
I've been having an ethernet problem since kernel 2.1.131. It's really
strange and I'm not quite sure why it's happening but it's extremely
annoying.
When I boot the machine, my Digital Tulip (NetGear) ethernet card works
just fine. However, after anywhere from several hours to a couple of days
of (heavy) usage, I can no longer reach machines on my local network.
When this happens, if I take the eth0 interface down and bring it back up
and set the default route, everything works great again. I've written a
small shell script that I'm running from cron every minute to save my
sanity.
#!/bin/bash
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255
/sbin/route add default gw 192.168.1.1
When the problem occurs, running this script makes everything work again.
After rebooting, it takes a while for this problem to occur. But once it
has happened, it seems to happen with increasing regularity. Usually 12
to 48 hours for the first occurance, then after running the script to fix
it, it'll happen a couple of hours later, then an hour later, then twenty
minutes later, then every minute or three.
And this weekend, I noticed something even more strange. I was out of
town and needed to access my internal machine. So I logged into my
gateway and tried to telnet. I could not reach the machine. So I did a
ping on the IP address and got no response. After letting ping run for a
while though, I started receiving responses in the 15000-20000ms range.
And when I did a ping -f, the machine started responding normally again.
I run rinetd on the gateway to forward port 80 to this internal machine
and when I did a ping flood from the gateway to the internal machine, the
response was snappy. Kill the ping flood and I got no response from the
computer. Weird!
Maybe I should be telling Alan Cox or Linus about this. I have other
machines running 2.2.6 with 3Com cards and I haven't had any problems. So
maybe Donald Becker should be aware of it (a problem with the ethernet
driver?). Hopefully, I can get some suggestions here before I go
bothering them with this.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone know a fix? Please
reply to the newsgroup and via e-mail if possible.
Thanks,
Ben Ginter

Just a couple of notes from personal experience...

Try "ifconfig".
>4. Then I run a graphical X application like xemacs. And it just hangs
>at the prompt.
Does it? I've tried firing up a remote Netscape 4 over a 33.6K modem and
I swear, it took several minutes before there was any effect on the local
display! How about something really lightweight like an xclock? If it
can't connect to your server you'll get an error message, otherwise you
should see something.
Is the link healthy? Is there RX light activity on the modem while you're
waiting for a display? Can you still get a good ping time to the remote
machine when things are stuck? In my limited experience PPP dialup networking
is much more likely to get hosed than X windows.
And as someone else noted, you can try using LBX (low bandwith X.) Here
is the incantation to run on the remote end, if LBX is intalled there:
lbxproxy :1 -display whatever:0 &
where "whatever" is the Linux box. Then set the DISPLAY variable to ":1".
The X application thinks it's talking to a local display at :1, and the proxy
translates this to compressed communications with the remote X server.
Only, when I tried it it didn't do any miracles. Netscape still took a couple
of minutes to fire up, but it would have been useable in a pinch.

: again. I am also getting the message "Apr 26 10:53:19 mp-ts pppd[5054]:

In all the cases I know about where this error appeared it meant that
pppd is prevented from using the serial port configured for the modem
because another process is already using it.
