Hi,

Well, I think you got the solution there. I believe Joe stumbled
over an 'updatedb' run by cron. This updates the databes needed
when you do a 'locate <filename>', so that you do not have
to run a long 'find / <filename>'!

Sorry, I couldn't resist a challenge...this could be fun. How many
different ways
can you do this?

If you can use ksh...here goes (note the colons!)

#!/bin/ksh
set -A MYIP $(ifconfig ppp0 | grep "inet addr:")
ISP_IP=${MYIP[1]#*:}
echo $ISP_IP

If you can get this guys IP he may be easier to catch than you would think. A
lot of serious ISPs are starting to implement a new version of Cisco Secure
Access Server that logs usernames as they acquire an ip address when dialing
into a modem pool.

Subject: autofs using smbmount
Date: 22 Jan 1999 10:16:38 GMT

on recommendation of other usenet posters, i'm trying to setup autofs
to use smbmount to mount a few shares on a windows machine on demand.

my file structure would look like this:
/windows/c --> \\windows\c
/windows/d --> \\windows\d
/windows/cdrom --> \\windows\cdrom

could someone who has done this before please post some example
scripts and an auto.master file, or direct me towards some good
resources. i almost have it i think, but i'm not sure if i'm headed
in the right direction or not.

i'm running linux 2.2.0-pre9, samba 2.0.0, autofs 3.1.3 and windows
95. i can successfully use smbmount by hand to mount the shares on
the windows machine, so that part is not an issue.

thank you.

Subject: "New Mail"-Notification via smbclient
Date: 22 Jan 1999 08:52:27 GMT

Hi,

I am running a linux mailserver that receives mail via UUCP over TCP.
The mails are sorted into the users' mailfolders in /var/spool/mail via
procmail and are fetched from windows clients with pop3.
The problem is that some users never check if new messages arrived, so i
decided to put winpopup into the startup folder and run smbclient to
notify them.
But - you guessed it - I could not figure out how to do it.
For testing, I just piped the whole message into smbclient via
/etc/aliases:

joe.user: "|/usr/bin/smbclient -M winhost -d 3 > /tmp/debuglog"

/tmp/debuglog says, that 500 or so bytes are transmitted. Only winpopup
does not popup. This works perfectly with exactly the same debuglog
when run from the commandline (no matter under what uid) , e.g.

cat /var/spool/mail/joe.user|/usr/bin/smbclient -M winhost -d 3 > /tmp/debuglog

I also tried to run smbclient from .forward with the same result. When put
into /etc/aliases, smbclient is executed as user daemon, but this does
not seem to be the problem because su - daemon, cat cat /var/spool/mail[..]
works.

Any ideas?

Marcus

I think you could try making sure that your PPP connection becomes the default
gateway when active. It sounds as if your trying to ping adresses on the
internet using the default gateway eth0.

I think I am getting closer. I found a PERSIST variable that I set to
 "no" in ifcfg-ppp0.
I also added
        /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup ppp0
to a once-an-hour cron job.

I think it's working. It would be nice if someone added this to the
ppp README file. I didn't see any documentation on the variables in
the ifcfg-ppp0 files.

Most of the commercial null modem adapters that I've seen implement the

Remote login as root is disabled for security reasons. You can login as a
normal user and change to root with: 'su -'.

mijn toepassingen.

Bas.

I may be wrong, but I believe 10BaseT and 10/100 cards need to see a "Link Beat"
signal from a hub before they will work; therefore, a simple crossover cable
won't work.

It's so easy to buy an inexpensive hub, why not just do it?
