i will try to help on this one.
when you boot your pc, go into the BIOS, and Compaq gives you the ability to
change IRQ's in there for any "Compaq" equipment.
it's a neat feature.

Hello all,
I want to share some partitions with a Apple Macintosh. I just installed the
appletalk protocol. I now can see my debian server in the apple chooser.
Wenn I choose the debian server I am asked for a user name / passwd. The
problem is: regular accounts on the debian server are not accepted. What's
rong?
An other question: how can I share partitions with the Mac?

Subject: DHCP client problem

Hello,
I run Linux RH 5.2 with KDE (Mandrake 5.3). I have a cable modem and to make
it work I got the latest DHCPcd and compiled it; everything worked fine.
The Ethernet card (NE2000 clone RealTek R-8029 PCI) is found by Linux.
I told Linux to use DHCP to configure the interface (through control-panel
then networking...) at boot.
Problem: it does not work. I get the following messages:

If I try to do "ifup eth0" Linux answers: "Using DHCP to configure Eth0...
failed".
"Ifconfig" gives only localloop. "Ifconfig eth0" gives information about the
ethernet card but all values are 0.0.0.0 or 255.255.255.254 (default). No
configuration has been done.
I am really going mad because it's been a couple of days since I first tried
to configure it.
I would be very grateful for any piece of info or a clue.

Subject: My mute Netgear FA310TX ethernet card

Folks,
Can't get my new ethernet card to talk. It's a Netgear, auto-sensing
10/100 Mbps fast ethernet PCI adapter, model FA310TX. Up to now I've
been using a 3c509 on a 10baseT line without a problem. I heard that I
should use the tulip.o driver in my /etc/conf.modules and it seems to
initialize OK, but no ping. A colleague has used this card with this
driver with success (he rebuilds his kernel, I'm trying the modular
approach). Some more details:
o kernel: 2.0.34
o Linux distribution: RedHat 5.1
o CPU 200 MHz i686
o Try the following:
- use 3Com card
- boot as single user
- try to bring up network: network start
o That worked. nslookup and ping OK. Here's the stuff from dmesg:

Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 21:08:33 GMT
No answers, but...maybe this doesn't have to do with Linux. As you say
yourself, you couldn't do this with NT either.
I am running NT and have this problem: two files won't upload. They are both
the same kind of file. They aren't big. The first bunch of kilobytes are
probably the same in each. They get to a certain point (using CuteFTP) and
then hang: 12880 bytes, I think it is. I tried FTP that comes with NT, and
CuteFTP, and I tried uploading to a number of machines. It only worked to
upload to my ISP's machine. I can download the file just fine.
So: if this isn't a problem with my ftp client, what then? Some kind of
routing software out there on the internet? (I don't understand much about
these things.)

My system runs Win95 OSR2. I know it has IE4 installed though I use
Netscape 4.51 instead.
I was not sure about the level of the IP stack and did not know how to
check. So, I just downloaded DUN 1.3 and installed that. It made no
difference in the problem. At least, none I could see.
Based on an off-line suggestion I received, I ran tcpdump and could see
various inbound packets, but none that looked like DHCP recognized
them. And, no reply from DHCP.
some clips from the tcpdump log follow.

As you can see the "active" connection is detected with no problem,
but the "listening" sendmail connection isn't. I had written a perl

Right.

AARGH. NO. Mgetty tells the modem to go off-hook when it receives data
on the port. If you set the modem to autoanswer, mgetty will freak out.

Sorry, no.

Subject: Sharing Tape Drive Between Linux and Win9x via Ethernet: Possible?
Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 00:19:55 GMT
Folks:
A few questions if I can:
1. Does anybody know if it is possible to share a tape drive between a
Linux box (I'll probably use Redhat v5.2) and a Win9x box, and use the
tape drive to back up both machines? The machines will be connected
via ethernet. Could Samba be used for this purpose?
2. Where would be the best place to place the tape drive? In the
Linux box, or the Win9x box?
3. Is there any great benefit of having a SCSI tape drive over an
internal IDE tape drive for the support?
(Obviously, the IDE is cheaper, and is supported. I'd really like to
get a parallel port external tape drive, but I see that is not
supported by Linux. Or is it?)
I'm going to be putting Linux on an old Pentium 166MMX, once we get a
newer computer. I'm presently specifying parts for the new computer,
hence the questions about tape drives.
Thanks in advance for all the help.
Roger

What was new in ppp-2.3.6.

* Pppd now opens the tty device as the user (rather than as root) if
the device name was given by the user, i.e. on the command line or
in the ~/.ppprc file. If the device name was given in
/etc/ppp/options or in a file loaded with the `call' option, the
device is opened as root.
You really ought to use pppd with chat - as the bombastic among us
are wont to say, it's the Right Thing To Do. ( To any that are tempted:
Don't bother - flames bounce off me and hit /dev/null without doing any
harm whatever. )

Hello Linux users and developers my name in Jon and I'm starting a new Linux
e-mail community where linux users and developers can come together to share
information regarding Linux. The community is really new and it won't succeed
without people. I know that there are lot of issues surrounding Linx OS and I
thought that it would be cool if we in the Linux community could come together
to discuss those issues. If you want to join hit the URL:
www.milomail.com
and from the homepage do a search for The Linux Group. I thank you for taking
the time to checkout this opportunity.
Bests,

This is your problem, your ISP uses CHAP authenticaion and you don't
have it set up correctly on your machine. See:
http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO-13.html#ss13.2
for info on how to set it up.
