I have a question.. I am going to help a friend of mine setup a
group of computers up on the internet through a dsl line. Basicaly the
business is getting 5 IP address's.. To put simply going to use those 5
for teh machines that will actualy be running web server and so on... on
the internet. But there is 3 other computers that are just going to be
web browsing and the cost of adding more IP address's basicaly doubles
are monthly cost. So we do not want to do that, on a very low budget.
So I was wondering can I use IP Masquerading to share the internet along
with using the linux box as the gateway? I have my linux system at home
running ip masquerade with my dsl line works great. But not sure if I
can have it as a gateway to the machines with true Internet address's
and Masquerading at the same time.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Edwin
If you're using SuSE 5.3, This has ISDN support out of the box,
so you don't need to compile the kernel.... all you need to do is start YaST
and add your card,
and ppp interface under network settings.
do a reboot and run: isdnctrl dial ippp0, then ping your provider.
don't forget to add your providers name server ip under /etc/hosts or every
time you boot isdn will dial out to resolve the name servers ip address.
good luck..
If you run into problems drop me a line... andyr@(nospam)itab-net.com

Subject: ftp over modem line stalls at 100% : why???
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 04:48:05 -0330
Hello,
I have experienced ftp stalls over modem lines many many times.
What puzzles me is that no matter if I am dialed up to ISP #A,
or ISP #B, no matter if I am using SLIP or PPP, no matter if I am
booted into Linux or Windows, no matter whether I am using Netscape,
wget, ftp, etc... to download my files, 99.9999999999% of stalls
I experience happen when my data has been downloaded to 100%.
And the cursoe goes down two lines or whatever, the program says 100%,
and how do I know there's a byte missing?: I don't get my ftp> prompt
back, The program just stalls, and it stalls at 100%, and the data happens
to be corrupt when I try to install my package or unpack my archive.
What is going on with these f* modem lines.
Time to replace those darned phone lines with CAT 5 cables!!!!!!!!!
Best Regards,
... and never, never again will I use a modem to download stuff!

I am thinking of using IP Masquerading on My linux box and
Accessing the internet via dial up. I Use Both 95 and NT
as well as Linux on my home LAN. Basically I would like to
know if it is posible to run the chess games on yahoo and ICQ
on the NT and 95 Boxes if I set up Linux with IP Masq and use
that to dial up the Net.
If it is posible How hard was it . Any pointers would be helpful.
I have found the IP Masq website and read the stuff there.
But it does not say much about ICQ or Yahoo games and
other Java stuff. As I understand it. the Java Games Applets
May not be able to work unless I know the port and Protocol
it is using. Any one know what they are.
And how to get it through the IP Masq system. ?

That one looks familiar. I used to get this once in a while on new Linux
(rh) installation.
Never had the time to track it down. Though I was lucky, It went away by
itself.
At least I don't recal doing anythung special.
FYI. I encountered this with some RH42 installation and kernel 2.0.x
Would appreciate too, if somebody could shed a light on this one

Assure that the lock option in not set in /etc/ppp/options
Further it helps to turn on the debug mode. Add 'debug' and 'kdebug 4' to
your
pppd commandline. see the man pages for more detail

Hi,
It's not only possible it's fairly easy, the TCP/IP stack is
already in your PIII. All you need to do is to set up a network
configuration in the network preference panel that uses a phone number
of "00", and set up PPP on the other side. You'll need apps that use
networking of course, but those are plentiful (head up to
www.pilothq.com to browse a great repository of Palm software).

Thanks! I'll try this tonight.
On a slightly related note, this new PnP support in 2.2.0. Is Linux's
PnP support similar in any way to Windows98's PnP support?
As a newbie, I'm on the look out for specific information. My latest
need is to recompile the kernel to support my sound card, a Yamaha
card. Red Hat 5.2 is supposed to have some sort of modular support for
sound, but the 2.2.0.final kernel I was sent by someone doesn't seem to
support Red Hat's module system, therefore, I'm going to check out RH's
web site and see if I can download a more RH5.2 friendly kernel and try
and compile sound support. Are there any web site out there where they
show you how get sound support working and more specifically recompile
your rernel? I've never done that before so it would be useful to have
some sort of reading material for help.

compiled and linked pppd with libdes library. I
actually followed the instructions in the README.MSCHAP.
Here is what I did:
1. First connected to the WinDOZE NT modem via
minicom. Here is the minicom output:
$minicom

CONNECT 115200
2. start PPPD
$ pppd
Here is the output from ppplog:

Baz,
When you dial in with minicom you should get a login prompt
from
your ISP. It will probably prohibit logins but most ISP's will
at least give you a prompt.
You could try using the ppp scripts ppp-on, ppp-on-dialer and
ppp-off.
Find * -name ppp-* to locate them. put them in /etc/ppp. Edit
ppp-on
for the values you use ie login, passwd, /dev/.... (check modem
on the
control pannel). execute only ppp-on. Turn on debug - see
PPP-HOWTO
and grep for debug. monitor with tail -f /var/log/messages. You
do not
need run pppd after you dial but make sure the daemon is running
with ps xw | grep pppd.
Most ISP are setup to work with Linux ppp scripts and the
canned
chat which ships with linux. There may be some pap
authentication
but your messages may give you a clue about this.

Here are the cross over config for your TP if you don;'t want to use a hub:-
pin 1 cross to pin 3
pin 2 cross to pin 6
and vice versa.
note: the numbering of the pin should be counted from left to right if you
hold the RJ45 pins facing up.

Looks like you have an IRQ conflict....I have that problem a while ago with
my 3c509 TP card. The kernel loaded it up to IRQ 10 by default. And the
network can;t work...until I realised that my display card uses IRQ 10....

I have that problem exactly.......and after much hacking I found it is an
IRQ conflict. The kernel used irq 10 by default (which is used by my display

Hello,
Can someone tell me what is the difference between /etc/host.conf and
/etc/nsswitch.conf and how RH5.2 use these files.
Thanks.

They even include some .reg files you can copy to your Win/NT system and
double click on the file, and this will install the registry patch.
I would recommend, though to enable encrypted password in samba and use
smbpasswd.

Try mpu_io=-1
I'm in debian, and I would also have to comment a line in /etc/isapnp.conf
to do that.

Andrew,
In setting up your samba server you should have cerated a
share called netlogon. With a directory of the same name on the server. In
this directory goes a file called config.pol. This file is created by poledit
and copied to the netlogon directory on the server. Make such you create a
user,
(for example admin) so you can logon with full access.
You might try the "linux.samba" newsgroup.

No you don't! ppp is supported as loadable kernel module and the modules
will be loaded as needed and when needed. Tha is when you run /sbin/ifup ppp0
the ppp kernel module will be loaded into the kernel and you do now have
full ppp support.
