If you can get on to ANY other internet site then it's not your system that
is having the problem.
The probable cause is that the site you are trying to connect to no longer
exists.
Second possibility is that the DNS (Domain Name Server - the computer that
tranlates the URL address into an IP address, rather like tranlating a PO
Box number to an actual street address) is either not up to date or is
faulty.
None of which are caused by you or can be fixed by you.
Just shrug your shoulders and move on...

Thanks again Larry, and others who responded.
This evening I powered the systems up, convinced that I had a bad cable
(nothing else made sense).
Of course, after I swapped the cables and powered everything up, it all worked
just fine (I'm sending this from my Win box through IP Masq on Linux... seems
much 'snappier', somehow) ;-)
My only explanation is, since I didn't physically change anything, that one of
the cables may have an intermittent connection. At this point everything's
working, so I'll push ahead, order some spares, and be thankful for the

Subject: Re: 3C905B-TX Drivers?
Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 20:13:04 +0200
I want to install SuSE Linux 6.1, possibly over my LAN. So I need
Information on how to install the driver for the network card. The machine
where I want to install Linux has a "3Com Fast EtherLink XL 10/100Mb TX
Ethernet NIC (3C905B-TX)". AKAs are: Cyclone, Boomerang, EtherLink III XL,
3C905B-TX.
The Ethernet-HOWTO of LDP says that "the support for the Cyclone 'B'
revision was only recently added. To use this card with older v2.0 kernels,
you must obtain the updated 3c59x.c driver from Donald's site at:
Vortex-Page <http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html>
Actually, I don't need that update because SuSE Linux 6.1 has Kernel 2.2.5,
do I?
But http://support.3com.com/infodeli/inotes/techtran/e36e_5ea.htm says:
"3Com does not provide Linux drivers. Third party drivers are available on
the web:
1. The URL is http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
Note: Once on that web page click on:
ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/3c59x.c to view
the source code"
3Com's latest driver is the EtherDisk 4.01b Release at:
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c90x401b.htm
At the moment I'm using the driver (it has been installed by a technician
while I wasn't at home and so nobody knows exactly what he did) from the
"EtherDisk (R) Diskette for the 3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus
Master NIC Family" under Windows98, which is so far buggy that BIOS can't
activate the NIC after a reboot. So I always have to quit Windows and press
the Reset button. But that's another problem.
So do I need the 3c95x.c driver or which driver can I use?
And how do I install it (before installing Linux, while installing Linux,
after installing Linux,...)?
You can also answer in German or French (though German and English are
preferable!).
I was delighted if you could also reply this E-mail to me (cuz I usually
don't have the time to read all the newsgroups to which I've sent this
mail).
Thank you very much.

With both Netscape 4.51 and 4.07 I find that if I have entries in the mail
server or news server fields in Edit->Preferences a dial-up gets initiated
by diald when starting Netscape. Then Netscape freezes up until the dial-up
has been initiated. If the modem is turned off it stays frozen and the only
way to close Netscape is to kill it.
I have of course made sure that the start and home pages are not "external"
so that's not the problem.
I've tried installing bind and dns cacheing but that just initiates a
dial-up as soon as named starts in the init scripts which is even worse.
Someone has suggested that I make my SMTP server be localhost rather than my
ISP's SMTP server. Could this be the problem? What will I do about setting
the news server?
Surely there's an easy way to stop this? Is it a general problem that people
have had with Netscape or is it just me?
TIA,

with a redhat-type system, check in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 for ONBOOT=yes
that line initiates the dial-up connection at boot time. to keep
connected, set up a cron job (crontab -e) to access a remote server
every x minutes. mine is set as root to set my local clock to the same
time as the remote servers clock every 15 minutes.

Quote from blackbox website:
"Powerful, affordable network management and fault tolerance for corporations
and ISPs."
-Centralize control of your LAN resources of ISP equipment
-Protocal independant
The SX100 is designed for LAN resource sharing. Controlled directly from a PC,
this protocal-indepent, non-blocking switch handles cross-connections at the
physical layer. Plus it enables analyer equipment to quicky and easily moved
around your network-eliminating the need for manual intervention.
Each SX100 is certified for use with Network Associates' Distributed Sniffer
System (DSS).
An Sx100 offers fallback switching for ISPs enabling instant fault tolerance to
communication servers, routers, and CSU/DSUs-switch from faulty ports or units
to spare ports or units. Inaddition end users can seamlessly reconfigure their
their communication equipment.
ISPs can immediately switch out failed communication lines or move T1 lines to
standby equipment. Whether it's managed locally or remotely from a central
site, an SX100 dramatically reduce overhead costs and manual intervention, and
it lowers the cost of spare equipment required to manage each Point of
Presence.
It automates the changeover process, enabling unattended operation POPs or
central facilitles.
Connect up to 24 communications lines to either 24 or 48 communications
servers, routers, and CSU/DSUs.

Ok, perhaps I'm just a little denser than usual on this subject. The machine
that connects directly to the Internet will get a dynamic IP address; the
others will 'appear' as if they are this machine using ip masquerading (I
think), even though I using a dummy local IP address for the local machines
in the 192.168.0.xxx range. Am I correct so far? If so, then does the
machine connected to the Internet need one of these addresses for local use
when _not_ connected (say, 192.168.0.2) to properly interact w/ the other
machines (laptops and old 486's, 192.168.0.3,4,5...etc). And, I guess it all
boils down to this: how does the local IP address, for instance, 192.168.0.2,
translate to the IP address given by the ISP when that machine (P2-400) _is_
connected to the net?
Sorry if this seems redundant to some out there. I don't have a static IP
address, and looking at the web page recommended previously, I won't either,
since it is not considerd acceptable to issue static IP's for ease of
administration (darn!!)
Thanks for the help so far, keep it coming!
