I was finally able to connect to my ISP with the help of a few people, and a quick
search
of dejanews. Someone suggested that my ISP was rejecting me because my username was
incorrect. This was indeed the case as they wanted my username of the form

That's my site, and yes, there was/is code for load balancing, but for
2.0 and only to demonstrate (mostly to myself) that it _can_ be done
(or, more important, that _I_ can do it ;-))
However, somewhere in that page someone announced a project (in China?)
which I've seen referenced by others not long ago, and I think they said
it was pretty good. Try to find that link in all the messages on the
page...

Subject: ?Windows NT dialup to Linux PPP server?
Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 23:52:33 -0700
Hello, Everyone,
I'm trying to network my laptop(Slackware Linux 3.5) with my
desktop (Windows NT 4.0 SP3) through a Null Modem Cable.
The problem is I can't get the Windows NT dialup to work with the
Linux PPP server. NT dialup complained that "there is an error with
the modem or other device", while the PPPD complained that
"LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests,
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 1"
Can someone help me understant what the error message means?
I know the null modem is working because two machines have
know problem talking PPP when they all run Linux.
Thanks in advance. Jianhong

Subject: NFS problem

Here's my /etc/exports file:
# cat /etc/exports
/home/ftp/pub/rh5.2 192.168.1.1(ro,no_root_squash) 192.168.1.8(ro)
192.168.1.2(rw,no_root_squash)
#
That's all on one line.
192.168.1.1 is a remote computer (over a ethernet network)
192.168.1.2 is localhost
192.168.1.8 is another remote computer
I've read through the NFS-HOWTO multiple times, no go.
I can mount /home/ftp/pub/rh5.2 just fine *if* I'm at the server computer
(192.168.1.2). Whenever I try to mount it from 1.1 or 1.8, it comes up with
an error message to the effect of "Permission Denied".
Here's what the /var/log/messages file says:
# tail /var/log/messages
May 4 18:33:55 lf11 mountd[2375]: NFS mount of /home/ftp/pub/rh5.2 attempted
from 192.168.1.1
May 4 18:33:55 lf11 mountd[2375]: Unauthorized access by NFS client
192.168.1.1.
May 4 18:33:55 lf11 mountd[2375]: Blocked attempt of 192.168.1.1 to mount
/home/ftp/pub/rh5.2
#
The command I'm using is "mount 192.168.1.2:/home/ftp/pub/rh5.2
/mnt/nfsmount".
This is beginning to irritate me, especially since I have always been able to
find answers in documentation.
Any ideas or pointers?

Subject: EtherExpress 16 Support in Linux?
Date: Wed, 05 May 1999 05:58:03 GMT
Sorry to be a bother. I am quite the newbie.
I am trying to find out wether or not the new 5.5 kernel supports
EtherExpress 16 network cards. I know they are part of intel classic adapter
line. But am unsure wether or not they are supported w/ the new kernel.
When I complied the kernel one of the options was support for a EtherExpress
PRO 10/100. Which I don't have I have the older EtherExpress 16 ISA adapters.
Any info would be helpfull.. Also I am running suse if that makes a
difference.
Thanks,

We are running a Del PowerEdge 4300 with the bundled Intel EtherPro
10/100 NIC. THe system was originally loaded with NT, and performed as
expected. Since reloading with Linux, the system seems to be very slow
in serving network requests. There does not seem to be any problem with
name resolution or broadcasting, as I have checked for both. Is anyone
aware of issues running Linux (RedHat 5.2 with 2.2.3 kernel on SMP
machine) with an Intel EtherPro? Is there a better driver to use for
this card?

Upgrade to the newest kernel version (2.2.x) and build yourself a kernel.
This version has SMP support built in. There is a lot of documentation
available, check the HowTos for the Kernel howto.

Hello, has anyone else had this problem:
(In the samba-2.0.3 directory)
cd source
./configure
...
...
checking for test routines... configure: failed program was:
#line 8082 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
#include "./tests/trivial.c"
configure: error: cant find test code. Aborting config
(I added a couple of echo statements to show the problem better)
This happens on a Redhat 5.1 box with gcc upgraded to 2.8.1.
It also happens on my stock redhat 5.2 box.
Does anyone know why ./configure doesn't work?
Thanks!

Try this
In the network config tool in the ppp options field enter "asyncmap
0x000a0000" without the quotes
This solved this for me!!
If this works send thanks to James Carlson [EMAIL PROTECTED], my post was

Subject: NFS mount trouble RPC: program not registerd
Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 13:40:45 -0500
This is a resend - my original post had the wrong address
I am trying to get a two node home LAN to mount directories and I'm
stuck. I've checked all the HOWTOs - but I can seem to find this one.
I have two nodes (upstairs - server, and downstairs). They can ping one
another, rlogin, export displays etc., but the NFS mounting is hosed.
It won't mount during bootup and when I do it manually
[root@naughton /etc]# mount downstairs:/net
mount: RPC: Program not registered
If I had an intelligent opinion about what this is you'd hear it. All I
have is - what does this mean?
If any one out there needs a little info, I hope this is relevant:
Upstairs /etc/fstab:
downstairs:/net /mnt/net nfs hard,intr,rsize=1024,wsize=1024
0 0
Downstairs /etc/exports:
/net upstairs(rw)
/net is on the downstairs node and I want to mount it on the upstairs
one.
If anyone can help or point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate
it.
TIA
Dan

Well. This is more of a thank you than anything...
One reason I like linux more than MS crap or anything else for that matter
is soley due to people like you. All the free support I can handle. I
recently had a problem w/ my ATI All-in-Wonder-Pro. If it weren't for people
who post on dejanews, I would have never fixed the problem. So I just want to
say thanks..

Yup. Done that. Didn't even phase the guy on the phone when I told him I
ran Linux, not Windows or Mac. But I did have to boot into Windows95 for them
to do the install (for the first time in years, at which point Windows ate
it's boot disk - *so* glad I got that SCSI disk and moved all the Linux stuff
onto it).

Same here, use dhcp. If you are running 2.2.x, you need a newer version,
but you probably knew that already.

It isn't needed. The MediaOne service is better and worse: the original
connect will only function from the network card you have installed when
they install the cable modem - the MAC gets configured into flash RAM or
something in the cable modem. While this means a regular DHCP client will get
you on right away, it also means that you are forced to only ever have one
machine able to hook up directly. This bit me when I needed to connect to a
client using some VPN software from one of the other machines around here.
(According to their tech support, however, if you want to call tech
support and listen to boring music for a while every time you want to change
MAC address, they can configure it for a different MAC from there. Fooey.)

Yup. ~150K/s downloads from ftp.kernel.org when I get new kernels. :)

Firewalling stuff would be good. I get pokes and prods all the time, but
as far as I know they aren't getting in. A lot of them are from the MediaOne
net itself.

???? Got me. I have the MediaOneExpress service, whatever that means.

only for download tho, right. you cant upload at that speed. and can you
also sustain consistent transfer rates at that? my adsl is guaranteed at
768k(guarantee being like any other guarantee, its possible that when i
really need it, its not there)
my friends who have cable, have indicated that they dont get anywhere
near the upload speeds of the dsl lines. maybe they are mistaken tho.
