I think you should try KDE (k desktop environment) it is a very good working
environment. Lots of people using it.
In kde setup a PPP connection is straight forward by using KPPP (like the
dial-in window under windows).
And there heaps fun in KDE
You can find in most Linux FTP site or go http://www.kde.org

Check out the Linux How-To's. They usually have what i am looking for
somewhere.

http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/

They are frequently put on distribution cds as well. The on-line versions
are kept up to date.

You could '/sbin/ifup eth1' (but then eth0 goes dead)

What you ned is to make a route to the net connected to eth1.

'man route'.

(what kind of automatic is build into your distribution, i dont know.
Maybe linuxconf offer some solutions under 'Routing and gateways')

tulip driver, I guess.

{ "Macronix 98715 PMAC",
        0x10d9, 0x0531, 0xffff, PCI_ADDR0_IO, 256, 32, tulip_probe1 },

Found in tulip.c at http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html

So try the tulip driver you have, and if not, check there.

check anyway for info on loading. linuxconf is maybe what you end up

That would be to compile the driver it into the kernel and use lilo to
activate it at boot.

If you make a new kernel and _add_ it to lilo, that could be a way of
testing it without disturbing the setup you already got.

To all:

        I recently upgraded to 2.2.10 from RH6.0
(2.2.5-??). In the process I compiled the kernel
with direct support of my two ethernet cards
instead of using modules. Ever since then
I have been getting error messages in the syslog
about can't find module. Something like:

mod_probe: can't locate module lo:0
mod_probe: can't locate module lo:1
....
mod_probe: can't locate module lo:49

The same goes for eth0, eth1. Now since
this only occured during boot up and my networking works
just fine, I didn't worry too much about it. However, I
recently added bind to my services. Now I get these messages
very frequently and they are filling up my log file. It seems that
named is some how causing the error messages in addition to the boot
time error messages. My syslog looks like this:

mod_probe: can't locate module lo:0
....
mod_probe: can't locate module lo:49
mod_probe: can't locate module eth0:0
....
mod_probe: can't locate module eth0:49
mod_probe: can't locate module eth1:0
....
mod_probe: can't locate module eth1:49

I get the above series of messages about every 1 minute
for up to 10 minutes. This happens at least once an hour.

I checked the error logs prior to building my own kernel
and there were no errors about modules. I tried rebuilding my
kernel with everything selected as a module, but the error message
were still there. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm at a loss.
Thanks.

Is the telnetd daemon up (or is it started by inetd and is inetd up)?

Are you using TCP Wrappers, and does your /etc/hosts.allow have a line
for 127.0.0.1 in it?

Does your /etc/hosts point localhost to 127.0.0.1?
Is your lo adaptor configured and addressed as 127.0.0.1?

Do you have firewalling enabled, and if so, are you permitting
connections through 127.0.0.1?

You need to use ipmasqadm with portfw module.
Commands are:
ipchains -I forward -p tcp -s external_ip port -j MASQ
ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L external_ip port -R internal_ip port

You have to test it from the outside of your network, not from the
inside or from the router.
Works for me for everything except #@$*& ftp connections, can't figure
that one out :-(
But I heard it works for other people...

If I comment out the lines in /etc/inetd.conf as you say, will that
give me POP? or do I have another problem? Thanks for the help.

Find out what 'user 750' is with ps -aux, perhaps a 'getty of some sort.
Perhaps something else. You'll need to remove it whatever it is. Check
the /etc/inittab then the /etc/rc.d/* boot files once you know it's name.

Hi,

We tried to load the module driver as proposed at

insmod epic100.o debug=1 options=1

which sets its media type to 10Base2/BNC.

Unfortunately it does not work.

Does anybody have any idea what to do?

Subject: pppd (version 2.3.5) and Linux (version 2.2.10 and 2.2.7)

I suspect that pppd version 2.3.5 does not work with kernel version 2.2.10
since after pppd has connected to the modem and talks to my ISP it reports
that
it is unable to get the 'remote IP address' and exits.

My previous set up using Suse 5.3 (kernel version 2.0.36) worked just fine,
so I feel that the problem does not lie with the ISP

Here is a copy of my log, using Minicom to 'log into the ISP' ....

Subject: mgetty
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 00:31:30 -0500

Hi All,

I have an internal modem as well as an external. I have configured
mgetty to accept incoming calls on my external modem from my internal
(testing purposes) modem using PAP.
My questions are:
1. When I issue the command "ifdown ppp0" my internal modem won't hang
up. It will hang up, however, when I issue the command "killall pppd"
What's going on here?

2. When this is all configured and mgetty is waiting for an incoming
call on my external modem, I issue the command "ifup ppp0" (internal
modem) and it takes about 30-40 seconds before the modem initializes and
dials.
Any ideas here?

Could you e-mail directly because my ISP is upgrading their news server
hard drive and everything is screwy.

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks in advance.

Chuck

Subject: How do I have two domain names with just one IP address?
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 14:54:34 GMT

Hello,

I have a static IP address and a domain name matched with the IP address.
I am running Linux as a server.

I have another domain name that is hosted by an ISP. I am thinking of
moving that domain name
to my Linux machine, so eventually two domain names will use just one IP
address.

My question is how I will do this. Do I just need to make another set of
zone files? I mean, do I
need to make one regular zone file to get the IP address from the domain
name and one more
zone file to get the domain name from the IP address?
Do I need to make any changes to any files?

Thank you in advance,
Masa

I have RH5.2 and a friend has 6.0. Both of us downloaded qpopper from
Eudora. We tried all versions available and have both settled in on the 3.0
beta version. Runs fine under both 5.2 and 6.0 and supports APOP...
