Subject: Routing NTweb traffic to Apache on Linux w/private IP
Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 16:57:42 -0600
I am trying to all requests from my NT box to my Linux Apache web server.
Here's the scenario:
My NT box is dialed into my ISP so I have a temporary IP address that I
can use for web serving from my NT box. This is just for testing a
development web site so I don't care that it's not a static IP address. I
have all of my web based html, servlets, etc.. on my Linux box running
Apache. I would like to route the calls coming to my NT box to the apache
server.
I tried going into IIS and forwarding all traffic to my linux box for a
particular site, but that only works here since it a private network.
Since the linux box has a 192.168.xxx.xxx IP address the real world
doesn't know how to route to it.
Any ideas???
Thanks,
Dave Brown

The 192.168.X.X is not a non routable address. This network is a invalid
internet
address, but it can routed normaly. Maybe you have problems with the router
configuration but, definily its not a address problem.

You guys are great! This is the first time I've used a newsgroup to answer
questions, and it worked great.
With bash,
rm ./-filename to remove the filename with "-"
rm \$filename to remove the filename with "$"
Thanks, everyone!

I'm having a small problem with apache server setup. I get "You

I access just the domain name I get the "It worked" page. I have a
public_http directory under the /home/muddy directory. I have three

Check the manual with the modem
Usually the command for tone dialing is atdt(followed by the number) and for
pulse is atdp(followed by the number).

Two possibilities spring to mind:-
1) You don't have the home directories enabled. RTFM ;-)
2) You don't have directory indexing enabled and you don't have a file of
the right default name in your directory. Normally index.html.

Hi,
Load the "options" file for your pppd
mine is at /etc/ppp/options
open the file in vi or emacs, then search
for a line that says:
lock
comment that line. kppp does the lock
internally so it's not happy if you turn on
the lock option for pppd
hope this helps

Subject: Re: DHCP w/ Red Hat 6.0 & PCMCIA Net Card
Hi Aaron,
I'm using DHCP on a laptop as well. But I'm using RH5.2, so the dhcpc daemon
is still doing fine.
In fact I am considering to upgrade to RH6. I intended to do it over FTP.
But the "bootnet" and "pcmcia" images didn't seem to have the drivers to my
NIC which happens to be a Xircom CE3 card. I learnt that the xirc2ps_ns
driver does the trick, but it's not included with the disk images.
Have you had this problem before? Sorry I couldn't contribute much to your
question and posed a question of my own instead.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, and regards,
Zaw

Hi everyone.
I'm trying to connect my laptop to my linux box with direct serial cable.
But in vain.
I'm sure that my serial cable is ok.
I started pppd at my linux box with following command:
pppd /dev/ttyS1 38400 crtscts 192.168.0.1:192.168.0.5
Then started DUN in my laptop.
This is what I got from syslog.

A friend runs a machine with 5 ethernet devices (long story as to why)
four of them have 192.168.[1-4].254 as their IP ( eth1 = .1.254 eth2 =
.2.254 etc etc) and eth0 is connected via cable to the internet.
Now.. if we just use "-A forward -s 192.168.1.0/0 -d 0/0 -b -j MASQ" (repeat
for all four internal nets) we get all traffic masqureaded which isnt
desirable, since we want the machine to work as a "transparent" router for
the four 192.168 nets.. i know i can fix this by writing 12 (or will it be
16?) rules, but is there a magic way to do somehting like this?

Subject: Strange situation with broadcasts on network...
Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 06:27:11 GMT
Dear All! We've got some problems using Linux and will be thankfull if
anybody can help us, even with suggestion. Situation: A 10Mbit network with
Novell Intranetware server as file-server. Also Alpha Server 4000 with Oracle
as DataBase server (works only through TCP/IP). A lot of workstations (about
60 in our segment) with Win95 and Win 3.11 using specific software with
Oracle. One WinNT Server 4.0 + Service Pack 3 as Dial-Up and Leased-line
connections server. Everithing works fine. We add one Linux Red Hat 5.2 BlacK
Cat computer, which will be user as firewall to Internet. It works fine with
Novell's services and with TCP/IP also. Good cyriillization. No problems. We
added another machine with Linux (same version, a bit different
configuration, maybe, will be WW server for us). All OK. At some moment we've
got a HUGE overload of network. All clients got problems, they even can't log
on Novell's server. After using NetXray 3.03 (network examination programm)
we found, that both Linux servers are sending some terrible amount of
BROADCASTS (about 20 GIGABYTES!!!!!!! per night!). After turning one of them
off from network - everything is again ok. Turn to net - after 2-10 minutes
(especially if you do "Find computer" from NT) - this two computers again
begin to broadcast some SMB type messages. When only ONE of them is turned on
network - nothing special happens. Can ANYBODY tell me, WHAT THE HELL IS
HAPPENED? On NT Novell Netware Client for NT is installed.
