The short answer is YES! The long answer is to read some of the
howto's. I'd explain it, but I don't have mine up and working quite
yet, so I'm not quite sure on specifics. If you're running the 2.2.x
kernels it should be much easier than with the 2.0.x kernels. I think
the place I saw most of that was in the IP-Chains HOWTO. That's one of
my projects for this weekend, so if I find it again as I build my 486
into a router/bridge this weekend, I'll let you know.

You believe wrongly. Your dns setup is broken.

According to the root nameservers, the authoritative nameservers for
your zone are 'ns.ulogin.com.' and 'DNS1.SNFC21.PACBELL.NET.'. But
neither of these provided authoritative responses.

When you start your nameserver, it is probably giving (or logging)
error messages. You need to followup on those errors.

*grin* Actually, you just used the exact right words -- 'balance the
load'. What you're looking for is Serial Line Load Balancing, I
believe. I've no experience in this field, but logically, barring any
kinda odd difficulties, it would seem to be the kinda thing you're
after. Take a look at the NET-3-HOWTO (at
http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO), under section 6.2.

Hope this helps. :)

I have a Linux 5.1 server setup as gateway to the internet. I have
multiple Windows and Linux workstations which exist inside my local
LAN. I have a firewall implemented on the gateway server. I would like
to have the users to launch there web browser and before getting access
outside the firewall, That they get prompted for a user ID and
Password.

How can I set this up and or is there a program that will allow me to
provide such a task?
Would it be better to upgrade to RH 6.0?

The program if one exist, should be Open Source however will consider
paying a fee.

Thanks

It just works here using ipfwadm. - I can see other computer's SMB
shares on the internet just fine from my Win95 box passing through my

While I agree that proper net etiquette is to not post jpgs to a non-binary
news group I am wondering why all you people that bitch about it don't get a
news reader that doesn't download message contents until you specifically
ask it to? If Microsoft has done anything right it's that Outlook Express
will only give you the message headers until you specifically ask it for the
message contents, thereby putting you in control of what gets downloaded and
what doesn't.

Furthermore, IMHO, it's equally as bad to post off-topic bitches and gripes
to the newsgroup when you could have easily sent the offender a private
email. (Which is exactly what I have done here so I guess we are all a bunch
of low class slobs!)

Subject: samba won't start at boot
Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 02:49:15 GMT

I'm using samba (2.04b) for file sharing between my linux system (RH
5.2, 2.2.2) and a Windows95 VMware guest. I'm unable to get samba to
start at boot. The following error appears in /var/log/samba/log.smb:

[1999/07/30 22:25:18, 0] lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(709)
bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=192.168.215.1 (Cannot assign
requested address)

If I start samba after booting, everything works fine. It occured to me
that perhaps some other service, required by samba, was being started
only after samba during the boot sequence, but this doesn't appear to be
the case; I boot to runlevel 3, and the only entry in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d
with a higher number than the link to /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb is the link
to rc.local. I've tried starting samba as the last statement in
rc.local, but I still have the same problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ok, I have installed the 2.2.10 kernel. This has unfortunately created
other difficulties.

My network cards are recognized and show up in ifconfig, but they will
not handle any traffic
( this is true for both cards, the internal network and external ). I am
sure this is due to something I have left out
of the kernel, but I don't know what. I've been playing with this since
my last post.

On the good side ipchains commands do respond, so ... If I can only get
the NIC's talking as well as with
my old 2.2.5 kernel then I'll be in business.

Suggestions Please !!

I think what you want to do is to use the 'arp' command on the Linux
box to store the entry in the ARP cache, using the -s option. As long
as you don't specify the temporary flag, it should be permanent, I
think. :)

It does not make sence to use a gateway for a network which is in that
network. Since you need a route to the gateway before you can add a rute
through this gateway. Setting the route will be like this:

route add -net 192.1.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.1.1.254

But as i said this does not make sence. Yu should write down how your
network looks like. Perhaps you need a host ro ute to the gateway:

route add -host 192.1.1.254 dev eth0
route add -net 192.1.1.0 gw 192.1.1.254

I'm running Red Hat 6.0, and I elected to do all my stuff out of rc.local
instead of mucking with the network-settings scripts. So I leave
FORWARD_IPV4=false, then do the echo thing to the /proc/.../ip_forward

Because I'm running both ADSL and ISDN to the same ISP, I have some funny
stuff in my routing tables that need to be set up to keep both
happy...and also to set up the administrative domain on the untrusted
side of the network. <sigh>

You know what ?

IT WORKS !!!

I can't tell exactly were was the problem, but finally i took a brand new
card from my personnal computer ,
a D-LINK DFE530TX and with the help of some existing messages on here (again
some from you!) I quickly was able to ping all machines on the network...
Sure Netbios is over Tcp/ip.
But i'm not finished with everything... cause i used a NE2K-PCI module
because not seeing the via-rhide module in the linuxconf list,
once i compiled (gcc with all arguments, then make config, make dep... if I
try then make zlilo, it stops with errors telling me that the kernel is to
big.... is it normal ?)
Anyway, the NE2K module works with the card even if it is probably not an
optimal solution (i mean ping is not as fast as on other machines...)

Finally, the 3C509 combo and the 3C900 Combo-PCI never worked , and the
EtherExpress PRO100 was never recognized by Linux.. in fact i discovered
that the PRO100A seems not to be supported.. only the "B" revision... and
guess what.. I have only "A" 's....;))

I think i will post my results as an indeoendant message on here, especially
to thank everyone who took some time for helping me..
Thanx anyway to you Vidar !

I've set that the /etc/sysconfig/network file. It still gives me the
error.

Many people configure their systems to download entire newsgroup contents
at off hours, then read it locally. On non-binary newsgroups, this
generally reduces online time compared to reading while online, but
posting big binaries can reverse that tendency.

I don't happen to be one of these people (I don't pay for my net access by
the minute), but I understand the concern.

Often true, but OTOH, if nobody complains PUBLICLY about large binary
posts, others might not realize it's a Bad Thing. A public gripe or two
every now and then, even if off-topic, can head off far worse in the
future.

That said, this WILL be my last posting on this topic in this thread.
