May be it is a problem with the pcmcia version.
I have quite the same problem with a compaq netelligent PCMCIA. Moreover
I have read mails, in dejanews list, which described the same sort of
problems with RedHat 5.2. There was no answers to theses problems.
Perhaps the solution consists of upgrading redhat?
If you get out of it I am interested to know the solution!

It is all you need to add Linux as NIS+ client workstation to an
existing NIS+ environment. Not more. I don't have so many time
for it.

In glibc 2.1 you have the NIS+ functions, and nis-utils contains the
tools like niscat, nismatch, nisgrpadm, nispasswd, ...

Could somebody recommed an ethernet card for a busy web server setup?
The idea is to set up a Dual PIII 500 SCSI box to run Red Hat 6.0 with
Apache as the main server function.
We did this succesfully before with RH5.2, but there were a lot of
problems and confusion with the different 3Com cards and drivers.
We could use something that gives a reliable 100Mbs connection and can
be replaced quickly without having to dowload drivers from NASA or
something.
By the way, has anybody tried the new RAID setup with the new 2.2.x
kernel?

There's a tool called 'Webbench' that can accomplish exactly this kind of

Just a thought - are both your network cables standard-wired or is one of
them cross-over wired? Try connecting the machines directly with each cable
in turn - not through the hub. If it works with one of the cables, the
cable's crosswired. (I know it's obvious but it's easily forgotten and you
feel REALLY stupid when you finally work it out...)

Take a look at http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html

Then look in /etc/named.conf or /etc/named.boot if you're still using bind4.
It will direct you to the rest of the files, usually in /var/named .

So, you will be assigning a public /24 IP address to this machine. Okay so
far..

> This box will be physically a pat of our ethernet that has class B addresses.

/16, not "class B". The old terminology is supposed to be phased out, being a
pain in the ass about it is my way of helping to speed up the process.

Anyway, I'm assuming you mean "LAN" when you say "ethernet", and you're
talking about a *private* network, like 192.168/16 or something similar.

The big question is _how_ is the machine connected to the LAN? If you have
two network interfaces [one for public, one for private], then your machine
can be its own gateway. Simply run `routed` or `gated` or some variant.
There are FAQs that cover this, do a search on the two keywords I just
mentioned.

If you only have one network interface, you're screwed. A single interface
can only be physically connected to a single network, so if you want this box
to see two networks you need two network interfaces. That means either
buying a second NIC or a setting up a second machine.

Subject: RedHat-6.0 and port forwarding
Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 13:26:16 GMT

I am having trouble setting up port forwarding (?) on RedHat-6.0. I
have
read the applicable HOW-TOs but am left unsure as how to do it. In some
places it seems that ipchains should be able to do what I want but in
others it seems that it will not.

Here is a better description of what I am trying to do:

First the picture:

                     Internet
                         |
                         | (1.2.3.4)
firewall (RedHat-6.0 with two network cards)
                         | (192.168.0.1)
                         |
                     ----------
                     | |
     (192.168.0.2) pc-a pc-b (192.168.0.3)

Now the description:

I have a machine, my firewall, running RedHat-6.0 that has two network
cards. Let's say its' external IP address is 1.2.3.4 and its' internal
IP
address is 192.168.0.1. Now on the inside I have pc-a, IP address
192.168.0.2,
that is running PC Anywhere in host mode and I want to be able to access
pc-a
using PC Anywhere from the Internet. PC Anywhere uses ports 5631 and
5632.
As the firewall is the only box that I have a valid Internet IP address
for I
need to set the firewall up to forward anything the comes in from the
Internet
to ports 5631 and 5632 to the same ports on pc-a. I have masquarading
working so
that both pc-a and pc-b have access to the Internet through the
firewall.

Now the questions:

Should I be able to do this with ipchains?

If so what would the setup commands look like?

If not what should I be using?

Thanks for any help and/or info,

John Morey

Could everybody who knows where to look please email me pointers on
where to look for more information on network programming.
Specifically, I need to communicate with a device over the ethernet that
only speaks a raw 802.2 (or is it 802.3?) protocol. I would like to
know where I should look to learn how to write the program that will
communicate with this device. I have scanned the FAQs and HOWTOs, but
they all seem to focus on what cards can be installed, what software can
be run, etc...

What I am looking for is information along the lines of:
1) What does SOCK_PACKET really mean when you call socket(AF_INET,
SOCK_PACKET, htons(ETH_P_ALL))?
(from memory, but I saw something like that in one of the
netwatch/statnet type programs.) The man page for "socket()" only
describes SOCK_RAW and SOCK_DGRAM, and states that other options are
documented elsewhere. Where is elsewere?

2) Can I write my program to communicate with this 802.2 device in user
space or do I need to write a device driver?

Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. I will summarize the
responses that I receive in a week or two.

Reply-To: "Georg Cantor" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have just installed my first Linux setup, Redhat 5.2.
and have 3 questions to ask.

1. When I try to telnet from another machine, I receive no response.
Nothing happens at all. The man pages state it can be started via inet.d,
which I do not know much about.

I have added users to the system, and I can even access their directories
via Samba, but somehow I cannot get telnet via root or any other user. Does
adding users automatically give telnet access or does that have to be
configured separately?

I need to know if the telnet daemon is actually running on the server, and
how to setup users to access the machine from outside.

2. The telnetd man pages state that telnetd can be started via inetd at boot
time. Can anyone show me how this is done? It appears that inetd is an
important networking utility used by a lot of programs.

3. I would also like to know about the Linux equivalent of autoexec.bat or
Windows NT startup services. How it works, and which file or files handles
this at boot time?

I may be wrong, but try "ps -aux |more". Find the pid for inetd, and
execute a "kill -HUP x" where x = pid.
