I know of two such beasts: linuxconf and webmin. You'll find them via

The command su does not put you in roots shell it just gives you roots
privelidges.
To log in a root you would type

bash$ su -l
password:

root@host bash#

then your logged in as root and in roots shell

hope it helps.

Subject: Some ?'s on networking three computers with RH 6.0
Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 22:14:40 GMT

Hi I have a couple of questions. I'm looking to build a little home
network between my laptop and my desktop. Both are in different rooms
in the house. I had them both networked together with the Netgear
starter kit, but disconnected it when I got Media One that I use on my
laptop. I'm looking for a computer that is powerful enough to be a
little server between my two computers. I want to set Linux up on it(
and maybe Win98 so I can back up my laptop onto it) , have Media One
come into one of the network cards, have the other network card go to
the hub where the other two will be connected. How easy would this be
to do? What kind of performance would i need in the server? I'm looking
just to buy a 133 or 166 mhz for cheap money and wonder if it would
work ok, I'm going to mainly use it for the internet connection and for
a backup up system on the hard-drive for my laptop. I have a bit of
experience in installing Linux and doing double OS setups on one
computer. Thanks for any help! - Chris

Subject: Best place for firewall script?
Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 22:07:52 GMT

I've got IP Forwarding/Mascarading working properly to allow my linux box to
act as a gateway/firewall. The problem I am having is that I can't seem to
figure out where to put the script that turns the firewall on.

I followed the instructions in the ipchains-How To and constructed the
script...called /etc/packetfilter

I then copied my /etc/ppp/ip-up file to /etc/ppp/ip-up.local. Did same for
ip-down.

In my ip-up.local script, I placed the line: /etc/packetfilter start

In my ip-down.local scrpt, I placed the line: /etc/packetfilter stop

Is this the right place? If I start the ppp0 interface using usernet, I get
an interface, the packetfiltering works, but the indicator never turns
green. And, I can't terminate the interface. When trying to shutdown, the
system hangs...forcing me to power down.

I've also encountered the error "unable to initialize interpreter" and
"maximum file count reached 4096 (or something like this)".
I'm betting it has something to do with where I put my script call.

Can someone help?

Thanks,

Charles

Subject: DNS Problem?
Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 17:18:29 -0500

Hello all,

I've set up a workstation running RHL 6 and DNS. It's a single station
looping any DNS inquiries back to itself. In other words, there are several
domains with the same IP address as the host.

The problem is when I try and boot up Netscape from X, when I set nameserver
in resolv.conf to the IP address my DNS is running on (the IP of the above
mentioned host) Netscape will never resolve any of the local domains I
enter.

I'd like to have it set up where it first checks with the local DNS and then
the outside... but whenever I configure resolv.conf - nameserver as the
same IP as my host... Netscape locks up... any suggestions...

Please advise.

Hi!

I'm using a modem to connect to my ISP and I don't have any other network
attached to my computer (stand-alone computer).
So I'm wondering if there is any good idea to use a Firewall (with ipcahins) on
my computer to block my open ports (SMTP, sunrpc, nntp, printer and laplink) so
that I will be more secure when I'm online?

What are the ipchains syntax that I should use if I want to block all external
(non local) connections to the above ports?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Re: Netzero on Linux
Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 22:18:25 -0400

Once the password is found and inserted to the DUN, sure one can connect to
the Netzero ISP with no more ads, i.e. no need to run netzero's DUN. Will
Netzero be able to detect that the connection is made using other DUN
instead of Netzero's DUN? I am a little bit skeptical in this matter since
the Netzero's DUN does communicate with Netzero to download the ads whenever
the user is connected to the Internet. If Netzero is able to find out that
its users are using other DUN to bypass the ads, it will start penalize such
user by asking the pernalized user to pay for the connection fine.

Any comment?

Ok so I got a nice 486 Linux box/firewall/proxy. Using ipchains.

It works I have to admit, pretty dammed well.

Before I setup the Linux machine I was using Conseal PCFirewall.
Since then I have no unauthorized inbound connections according
to Conseal which is great. Now, how do I stop local programs
from 'calling home' without my permission. Real Player G2 comes
to mind as well as Winamp and a couple of games.

If it makes any difference the internal network consists of 1 NT Wks and
2 '95 boxes.

Thanks for the help

Nothing to be sorry about. Just knowing that it exists and is possible is
more than enough. The additional information is gravy. One of the later
posts on this thread gives what appears to be some nice additional info (I
just did a quick read, I am going to reread it now).

"I hate MS for even developing WINS"

It goes away in NT 5.0 errr I mean windows 2000. Or in microsoft speak "WINS
is fully supported in Windows 2000 but once all of your servers and clients
are upgraded to w2000 we suggest that you no longer use WINS". That from one
of their technet seminars that I attended.

Seems that with their active directory stuff they are pushing their
implementation of DNS.

The gateway machine has 2 IP addresses, one local and one global (aka real).
Local IP should always be static. It is irrelevant whether global IP is
static or dynamic.
