Subject: How to make a linuxbridge bridge it's own traffic?
Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 16:22:36 +0200
I have a setup like this at home:
100Mbps HUB <------> Linux box <------> 10Mbps HUB.
I have setup a bridge on the Linux box, and the 10Mbps machines can talk
to the 100Mbps machines, and the other way around. The 100Mbps machines
can talk to the Linux box, but the 10Mbps machines can't.
I've setup the 100Mbps NIC with IPnr 192.168.0.1, and the 10Mbps NIC is
"configured" at 0.0.0.0.
Is there any way to make the Linux bridge code handle it's own traffic,
I mean to decide which way stuff from the Linux box itself goes just
like it does with the traffic on the wire? As it is now, whenever the
Linux box tries to connect or reply to a 10Mbps machine, the data is
only sent to the 100Mbps wire. Maybe there is a patch or some smart
solution to my problem? I really don't want to subnet and use normal
routing, I want the bridging to be 100% transparent...

I remember I could ping for kernel 2.0.36, but now firewall is running
2.2.7
Is this the reason? I hope it isn't.
And I haven't any ipchains rule setted still.
>From my PC 192.168.1.1, I couldn't ping 10.20.30.254. when I run
traceroute, I got a result from .253 only and * * * again and again. But
I could ping router from firewall and traceroute to anywhere on internet
fine.
And what is the function of the first two lines of the routing table.
That is the first I have ever seen.
Thanks and thanks,

I was looking into setting up an EQL PPP link with Linux when I discovered
that dual-line modems are available. These modems implement a multilink
serial connection via hardware. They act like a 112k modem.
I also noticed that they are all internal. Has anyone installed one of these
modems under Linux? If so, did you have any problems? The only one I have
seen reviewed so far is the Diamond Multimedia SupraSonic II. I have also
heard that Boca Research has one, but did not see any mention of it on their
website.
Any help is appreciate!

Hi,
I have a machine with an Intel PnP ISA PRO/10+ ethernet card. Linux
sees it just fine, so it seems: ifconfig shows that it gets the IRQ and
IO address just right, as well as knowing to use 10baseT and insmods the
eepro.o module. However, I can't see the network, and the message
kernel: eth0: multicast setup failed
appears is /var/log/messages. The string comes from the driver eepro.c,
so it seems that linux is having some trouble talking to it.
Can anyone help?

Hi, I am trying to set up my home LAN to include a dedicated linux firewall
box. LAN consists of 1 WIN95 box (Computer C) and 1 RH Linux 5.2 box
(Computer B) connected through a HUB on network 192.168.1.0. I want to add
the third computer as a firewall box for the LAN (Computer A) running RH
Linux 5.2. on network 192.168.32.0. and my ISP through ppp0. I have added
the second ethernet card (eth1) to Computer B. Installed RH 5.2 and
ethernet card (eth0) in the Computer A.
Now, is it possible to connect Computer A (firewall/internet) to Computer C
with a "crossover" cable and route internet packets from Computer A to
Computer B (eth0, eth1) & C?
Computer A address = 192.168.32.1 eth0
Computer B address = 192.168.1.1 eth0
Computer B address = 192.168.32.254 eth1
Computer C address = 192.168.1.2 eth0
Have read NET-3-HOWTO, Ethernet HOWTO, etc. and tried all I can think of.
Maybe the setup I am trying to configure is not possible, if so I apologize
for wasting the groups time and the net bandwith.
Thanks for any help/advice/references, aubrey

I'm running RH5.2 w/Rogers@Home. Static IP, but that shouldn't make a
difference. I run my own mail server, ftp serwer, web server, and use
IPMasquerading to share the connection with 3 other computers on an
internal LAN. It works fine, but don't expect to get any kind of tech
support from Rogers if something goes wrong. :)
The only problem I've had is that the connection has dropped for 1-8 hours
about 10 times in the last year. And their news server always seems to go
offline. I run a local news proxy (leafnode) and sync groups every hour to
get around that problem.

Sure. You don't get demand dialing with the 2.2.0 kernel code but it
works with the ppp-2.3.x series. The 2.2.0 kernel code comes with the
2.0.x kernel source code but ppp-2.3.x comes with a ppp.c that you can
install in the kernel source tree.
Get ppp-2.3.7 if you want demand dialing since both ppp-2.3.4 and
ppp-2.3.5 have a problem installing the ppp.c, and the ppp.c also has
an error that affects the 2.0.x kernels and must be corrected.

I am under the impression that the problem isn't firewalling, but
rather IP masquerading. I read here, about a year ago, that there was
a non-free sol'n available from some company that I can't remember at
the moment. You might want to check Dejanews, if you're really
interested. However, I'm just about inconvenienced enough to want to
throw some money at getting a GPL'd sol'n into a stable kernel.

Our routers here are all Linux based. I recently had to replace a UPS
and took that chance to upgrade the OS as well. These boxes had all
been up constantly since we moved in to this building this past
October 4, 1998. When I shut them down to move here, they had been up
none stop since I installed them last May. Fully one year up all the
time, except to move to new digs, then just two weeks ago, to replace
a UPS.
Our Sparc servers have the same history, except we have had them a
good deal longer than a year :-)
