Assuming you're running wuftpd, examine /etc/ftpaccess. There should be a
line beginning with the word "shutdown". Following that word is a file name
(RH 5.2 by default uses /etc/shutmsg). rm /etc/shutmsg will allow ftp to
work again.

man ftpshut will also explain exactly what's happening.

Subject: ARP problems or bad NIC?
Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 22:28:19 GMT

I have 2 PC's at home that I'm networking together.
One is a p90 running RH5.2 the other is a 486DX4 100mhz also running
RH5.2.
The 486 is named skitzo and the pentium is named bipolar.

I have the two PC's connected using twisted pair with 10-Base-T
SMC-Ultra NIC's and a SMC hub.
I have both are on the 192.168.1 subnet, with a netmask of 255.255.255.0
and broadcast of 192.168.1.255
I configured routing without a default route (since I don't need one
yet), just have routes to the loopback net and to
192.168.1.0
I have proper /etc/hosts entries so that I can use hostnames
I know that everything is configured right (so far) because I can ping
to both the localhost address AND the
hostname for eth0, plus no conlicts doing a "cat /proc/ioports" and "cat
/proc/interrupts".

I run tcpdump on both PC's at once, and have both boxes pinging each
other at once.
The results were wierd.
Here is what I saw from the pentium:
17:56:37.669998 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:56:46.729801 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:56:47.669974 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:56:56.729777 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:56:57.669998 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:57:06.729800 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:57:07.669974 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:57:16.729779 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
17:57:17.669999 bipolar.bellsouth.net > skitzo.bellsouth.net: icmp: echo
request
and so on and so on....
The pentium was seeing nothing back from the 486.

I can't paste in the output of tcpdump on the 486, but I'll tell you
what it is.
It had the same non-stop icmp echo requests from the 486 to the p90,
over and over with no replies.
Sprinkled in about every 15 echo requests would be a echo request from
the pentium, and an immediate reply to it(remember I'm seeing this on
the 486). The pentium never sees the replies.

Since only sporadic packets seem to make it to the 486 from the pentium,
and none make it back, I guess the NIC in the pentium is bad?
At first I suspected that there were ARP problems, but now as I explain
everything t seems that the NIC in the p90 is bad.
Everyone agree? This is kinda tough. (for me, at least)
Please share your thoughts on this, and I'll send routing tables and
ifconfig outputs if people really want to verify them.

You should remove the last `*' . You are using ppp-2.2.0 which doesn't
use it in the fourth field and it may cause more trouble later in the PPP
negotiations. Bill Unruh probably was unaware of this since ppp-2.2.0
is a rather old version of the pppd package. The current version is
ppp-2.3.7 . The 2.2.0 version should, however, work perfectly well with
the 2.0.x kernel series but lacks some new features.

Actually even with the newer pppd versions the fourth field is unnecessary
unless pppd is authenticating the PPP peer.

: Here is a more sanitized /var/log/ppp May 7 13:20:31 edgarc pppd[486]: pppd

Well the log message were still all run together but it was easy to
see that the problem is still the same: pppd refuses to accept PAP
authentication.

The usual reason for this is the pppd option -pap which is not in
the options file you show above. Other reasons could be a missing
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets file or one without a secrets line configured - but
this is a guess, pppd would still fail but perhaps not in the same way.

The last reason it could fail is that the ppp-2.2.0 pppd you have
didn't have PAP compiled into it. This seems unlikely, I have and have
used ppp-2.2.0f to authenticate with PAP and PAP is compiled into it
by default.

There are other files that pppd can take options from. These are defined
in "man pppd" under the FILES section near the end. I'd look for these
and see if there is a -pap option in one of them.

And you still haven't said how pppd is started. Pppd will take -pap as
an argument.

These are strange messages. How you get a ppp interface named
ppp-1073743108 is totally beyond my imagination - the usual interface is
ppp0 for just one pppd process. It looks like you are also trying to load
a module with that same name and modprobe can't find it.

The ioctl message says that pppd can't set the interface MTU, which
*doesn't* seem strange in view what the previous messages say.

Correct, they use the CPU for functions that real modems supply and need
drivers that are only available with non-disclosure agreements. This is
contrary to GPL so there are no Linux drivers for these "modems."

I'm running qmail on Slackware and its mighty fine.

My current ISP is Demon and when I connect it automatically
sends me my mail which is of the form

        [EMAIL PROTECTED]

and is delivered to the appropriate users on my network
of two PCs using qmail aliases where necessary.

I now want to change to freeuk.com where the multiple
e-mails will be of the form

        [EMAIL PROTECTED]

However, as this is pop3 mail, I've been using fetchmail
to download my mail, but it just ends of in the mailbox of
the user who initiates fetchmail.

What else do I need to do to ensure the mail is distributed
to the right users?

When you connect with ppp you establish a Point-to-Point Protocol
connection. The remote side (your ISP) establishes a host route to *one*
machine (you). The remote side doesn't know how to route packets to your
other two machines.

What you want to do is called IP Masquerading. Read about it at
http://metalab.unc.edu/linux/HOWTO/mini/IP-Masquerade.html

~ There is a more elegant way of doing it using "popen" in unix.
~
~ sid = popen("who am i | awk { print $6 }", "r"};
~

That's elegant eh? On a VMS/MultiNet system, you can just do a
$TRNLNM() (or getenv() if you will) on the SYS$REM_ID logical,
which directly gives you the client's IP address and TCP port
number in hex. I guess Unix has a different standard of "elegance".

On another machine with an Ethernet adapter (3Com 3C590-TP), RedHat can

setup Token-Ring.

Thanks. BTW, I am new to Linux.

So when should one use ip masq. instead of just ip forwarding? I have two lan
segments (192.168.1 and 192.168.2) that I want to be connected through a ppp
link. I assume I just use ip forwarding on the two machines that actually
have the ppp link? This would allow each machine in segment 1 to speak with
each machine on segment 2, and vice-versa. However, I would need to tell each
machine to use the ppp machine on it's segment as a gateway, correct? (This
is the part I am a bit confused about.)

If I then wanted to have both segments use one ppp link to the Internet, how
would I go about that?

Hello Gilbert,

I just install RedHat 5.2. I have tried to run NETCFG to add a
Token-Ring interface. When the machine boots up, it still can't find
other machine (by pinging). Is there any special instruction I need to
set for Token-Ring card? I have a IBM Auto-Wake 16/4 Token Ring
adapter.

On another machine with an Ethernet adapter (3Com 3C590-TP), RedHat can
detect it without any problem. So I think it's more complicated to
setup Token-Ring.

Thanks. BTW, I am new to Linux.

Do you have the correct IN-ADDR.ARPA zone files, in your
named.boot/named.conf? You will also need to add the appropriate PTR
records in the zone file. You can find BIND info at http://www.isc.org

I read somewhere that you need to set up DNS for qmail and sendmail. Do they
mean DNS server or DNS client?

Also, I am able to use Netscape Navigator in Linux and it DOES translate, say,
www.microsoft.com to its IP address. This means that the DNS client for my
machine is installed, right?
