Aha! I knew there was something dumb and hardware related going on! No,
these aren't cross cables, they're just cables. Oh well, my hub should be
arriving Monday.

I have an answer for #6 - Yes!
You need to install the autofs package and compile the
kernel with the automount feature turned on. You can then
customize the /etc/auto.master and maybe /etc/auto.amnt and
/etc/auto.misc to reflect your system settings. I know that
coming from a MS world this might seem complicated but it
eventually will get easier.
I you need more help, let me know.

linux has a free implementation of a "load balancing" concept which
is as flexible as local director, it also contains some features
of ibm's netdispatcher:

This is a PAP authentication failure.
If the name or password has non-alphabetic characters then you may need
to quote with "" or '' in both the secrets file and the pppd name or
user option where the username is specified so as to identify the right
line in the secrets file.
If that doesn't help then try using the pppd option "asyncmap a0000" .

Howdy,
I have just set up RedHat 6.0, and want to run it as my main operating
system. On my local intranet I am running MS Proxy Server 2.0 on NT Server,
and in my current Win98 system I have the WSP (winsock proxy) Client
installed for all winsock requests (so it makes the internet seemless in
windows). How do I access the proxy server in Linux? Is there no WSP
Client
equivalent for linux? Is there another way of setting up linux so it can
use the proxy server?
I know the obvious answer would be to replace NT Server with linux, but I am
trying to take linux one step at a time (i am relatively new to it)...
Any help would be greatly appreciated... And may i just say, LINUX RULES
:-)

This has been driving me nutty. I decided to setup a small business with
linux as a file/printer/e-mail/internet server (2 offices, about 10 clients
at each)
I can do all of the rest (file, printing, and internet access) but I am
having a hell of a time understanding linux (unix) e-mail. I have searched
countless how to's but just want to know one thing. How do I do the
following:
Allow 2 offices to send and receive e-mail to each other
Allow each office to send and receive e-mail locally (don't go out to the
internet when you want to send something to the guy in the next cube)
Have a dial up connection retrieve e-mail from an internet POP server, and
deliver it a win95 client when the win95 client requests it.
I'm assuming i need sendmail (or qmail), a pop server, and a ppp connection.
DO i need a DNS server or can I just resolve through hosts file?
Can someone please point me to a good source on the subject of e-mail, or
offer some advice.
Thank You

I am using Redhat 6.0 for a firewall between my local lan and the
internet. I am connected to the net via cablemodem and everything is
working ok right now. The problem is I have a very limited ipchains
script that is only three lines. My fear is that it is not secure
enough. The more I read about how the hackers get in, the more
worried I get. Listed below is my current ipchains script.
ipchains -F
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.0/16 -j MASQ
I have a very limited inetd.conf and I have disabled inbound ftp and
relocated the telnet port. My question is how exposed am I? I
received a message on my 98 box that said there was a conflict with
another MAC using 192.168.1.2, which is the address of my 98 box.
The MAC it listed is not on my lan. Is this a sign of someone
spoofing my firewall?
Thanks

Yeah, I don't know why these people make it so hard on themselves. He
could have just used the default news to talk to his own news server. As
a matter of fact you can add as many news servers as you want, as far as
I know. How long does it take to go to the Edit menu and choose
Preferences and add the info!?!

Right place.
(dont have english version, so the names might be different, but,
guessing;)
"Control panel"
"network"
"TCP/IP->Accton-something-nic(I have.) (click or chose
properties on that)
"netBIOS"
I dont have netbeui installed (up at "network"), and I dont use
"configuration - WINS" set on the nic, down at same level as
"netBIOS".
Hope this answer what you asked.

Dont know how long time it took. (the UUCP-part, i dont know, tell
me.)
In the old days when news bandwidt and speed was measured in
videotapes put on airplanes (I'm told) it also took som time I guess.
But then again, in the real old days, with punch-cards strapped to
pigeons..

Try to get some kind of free server, and check on them. They can be
very slow to download amounts of news from. You could also find one
with allows you to post, and check how fast/slow it moves the other
way.
I dont think the path indicates you are ignored. It shows the path
the message took to reach me. If i used another server, the (later
part) of the path would have been very different, i guess. My isp had
some problem getting news, now it is ok. So they may have chosen a
uplink for news which gives a long path.

Subject: NIS and subnets...
Hi to everyone,
I have a question (... which is also a problem :-/ )
I've a server with two NIC, to which are connected two different
networks: my (debian) lab. net and a private subnet (class A net...). I
would like to make my server act as a NIS server for both networks,
which should be of different domain name of course. Is it possible as
you know? If not I should find a new server-machine to let it act as the
other NIS server (and this is a big problem).
Any help welcome.
PS:
i'm running Debian 2.1

Kim,
Are you using diald or kppp? If you have kppp installed, dial up is
so much easier. Also, just call the support line at your ISP and
they'll let you know what authentication system they use (most likely
PAP).
