Hi,
I have to put together an internal company Apache server on a Red
Hat Linux box. The main application Apache need to run is a web
page that is tied into a database and must have both read and write
access to the database.
Does anyone have any opinions on what is the easiest, best way to
go at this? What is the easiest way to link Apache to the database,
etc.?
Many thanks,

at a shell prompt type 'setup' (no quotes)
you'll have options to start samba there, it'll be smb though, not samba
This works only on Red Hat

Subject: RH 5.2 + 2.2.X, 2 NIC's, Firewall
Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 20:54:52 -0400
I'm building a firewall, and have done so before. Previously I used RH
5.1. It seemed best to definately start with RH 5.2. Since I was
recompiling anyway (for two adapters and to enable firewalling) I
upgraded to the 2.2.6 kernel. I can't get the two adapters running.
They are Linksys Etherfast adapters. The instructions say to use the
Tulip driver. Which I did. It is loaded as a module (or compiled into
the kernel). The adapter works fine. I added a second. I put the
append in LILO (and ran LILO) (append="ether=11,0x4400,eth0
ether=10,0x4000,eth1") . I put the following in the /etc/conf.modules
file:
alias eth0 tulip
options eth0 io=0x4400 irq=11
alias eth1 tulip
options eth1 io=0x4000 irq=10
The values come from the bootup messages. The adapters appear to
configure and come active but both addresses are on the same card. That
is if I ping the x.x.x.56 address it is on eth0. If I ping x.x.x.156 it
is also on eth0. Nothing is on eth1. I can verify this by pinging from
another box and disconnecting the respective cables.
Any suggestions?
Also. I thought 5.2 used IPChains, not IPFWADM. IPChains is not a
recognized command but IPFWADM is.

Hi:
I think my DHCP client does not work.
Why I say that?
the ip addresss that i got from dhcp
never work. instead, i used the ip
address from windown and i get it working.
is there an update version or is it a new bug?
what should i do to get it fixed? did i do anything
stupid.

Hi,
does someone know how to figure out if there are several logins on the
same username?
I use .htaccess/.htpasswd files on my machine to restrict access on
certain areas.
Assume I have a user "testusr". How can I figure out (and as a
consequence disable his login) if "testusr" is logged in several times.
I would like to block such a login in realtime (if possible).
If anyone has a hint for me how to get this to work, please let me know.
Thanks

Nope, but I worked at a steel mill that used _large_ AB PLC5 racks w/
Pyramid integrators and Reliance AutoMate DCS systems, Most of our PC's
ran DOS 5, cause windows barfed too often when accessing the master
rack... very ugly!!, not to mention extremely dangerous in that
environment. I might suggest running the AB 6200 software on DOSEMU in
Linux. I would suggest RSLinx in WINE, but I don't think WINE is ready
for that kind of abuse yet.
Hope some of this helped

Do you know an easy way to "network" my linux pc to my win95 pc, preferably
via a serial connection or via null modems?
My linux pc will be for local use only and will not be connected to the
Internet. I need a somewhat simple method for connecting my win95 system to
the linux (debian) pc so i can exchange files between the two.
I'm familiar with direct connect with win95 between another win95 pc. I just
don't know how to accomplish this with linux.
If you know apps or know a solution using tools on my linux system I'd really
appreciate the help.
Thanks!

I had a heck of a time getting samba going in RH 6.0. And that was only on
the client side of things. It seems that all the scripts and programs have
changed. All the variable names and switches have changed! That was for
smbmount and the like.
Even the man pages are now only half the size. I haven't done anything on
the server side of things but is it possible that they've changed things
around?

Any one fancy a MAN ? - the GAGFAN proposal
I've just been putting a LAN in my house - it's a big
surprise to see data running around at 10M bit/sec rather
than the 56 k/sec for a BT connection to "the" internet and I
don't have to pay to use my LAN.
Statistics prove that around one in four British houses have
a computer ( more than any other nation ) - so why not extend
a LAN down the street? In other words a user supported
Metropolitan Area Network - MAN. Or a Gossiping Across Garden
Fence Area Network - GAGFAN.
The hardware looks simple - you need an ethernet card and
a streetsworth of cable. Two or more cards and you can play
at being a router or repeater. Ethernet on a coaxial cable
should be good for 100m. Drawbacks with cable are the
problems of placement of the cable, and electrical safety -
the ethernet card insulates your computer to 3 KV, touching
the cable could not be guaranteed safe, but you can add an
isolating transformer, unlike the PSTN.
There are some interesting alternatives to cable: fibre
optic, line-of-sight optical, and radio ( allows mobile
operation ) - either the purpose built wireless LAN adapters
1 Mbit/sec and about 100m range ( very new stuff 2.4GHz ),
line-of-sight microwave links ( some good amateur systems
have been built, 10Mbits, 10GHz ), or licence-free low power
UHF transceivers - so far only up to 9600 bit/sec but you can
have more than one transceiver, if you're desperate you could
use CB or amateur radio UHF or VHF with a modem or sound card
at 1200bit/sec. ( Try a search for ALOHA ).
Once it's installed you only pay the electricity bill -
and when the millennium bug pulls the plug on BT or BT's
power supply - you still have communications. Not only can
you exchange data on the MAN, but with internet-phone and
internet-video software you wont need the BT system to make a
phone call.
Software brought straight out of the box will do some of
the functions, but more than standard Microsoft -ie Linux -
may be required. TCP/IP could have trouble with 32 bit
address space, the amount of routing information being
transmitted, and redundant routes - more than one path.

Most distributions come with telnet enabled. You can check /etc/inetd.conf
for the line that reads;
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd
As long as there is no # sign at the front of the line, Telnet should
start when port 23 is accessed. This port value can be checked in the
/etc/services file.
You can check the /var/log/messages file for possible errors. The telnet
damon is not started until requested. Also, make sure you have installed
portmap as one rpms during installation. And "inetd" is the network super
damon.
The scripts in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/ directory are the start up and
shutdown scripts. /etc/rc.d/rc3.d is the subdirectory that is used
for normal multiuser startup.
