Look in the log files to see if there are any messages hinting why the connection
was refused. Eg, /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure. Make sure you have
daemon.*      /var/log/messages
in /etc/syslog.conf and do
killall -1 syslogd

The problem has now gone away. I had to change my ISP and when i set up
kppp with the new details I was able to get onto the net. If others are
having probs after a kernel i recommend they go back to the beginning with
their ppp setup. My kppp setup did previously work under kernel 2.037 and
a previous version of ppp but it did not work under 2.2.9 kernel with
2.3.8 ppp.

I have a SMC1211tx network interface card, in my experimental Linux machine
(Running Manhattan, RH 5.2) no being recognized by RH.

I have downloaded the latest version of the driver from Donald Becker's NASA
site and copied as rtl8139.c to /lib/modules/preferred/net. When I tried to
compile it with the directives in the final part of the final I get a ton of
errors and it does not produce the required .o (module) file.

Any ideas?
Thank you in advance for any response.

First, get the absolute latest version of pump from the Red Hat Errata
site.

Then go in and manually edit /sbin/ifup script to add the hostname
request to the call to pump(8). I coded mine:

     if /sbin/pump -i $DEVICE -h `hostname` ; then

adding the "-h `hostname`" to the command.

The DHCP server I was talking to insisted on the hostname. I found this
out when using tcpdump(8) and comparing a Windows 95 DHCP session and a
Red Hat 6.0 session.

And then there is some isa-pnp versions out there who ned to be taken

Done with setup-utils for the nic. (and maybe it could be done with a

look at the index, chapter 5 on the spesific nic, and the rest.. )

To make it sure whether the modem can be recognized by Linux at all, I
would suggest that you disble COM1 and COM2 from BIOS. Now, since there
will be no serial port on system except your modem, it doesn't matter
which COM port you set it up for. But for simplicity, it is better if
you set it up for COM1/irq4 or COM2/irq3. With this scheme:

1. BIOS POST messages normally should report a serial port. You can
confirm this while booting with onboard serial ports enabled. Note the
reported address: 0x03f8 / 0x02f8 / 0x03e8 / 0x02e8 means COM1 (ttyS0) /
COM2 (ttyS1) / COM3 (ttyS2) / COM4 (ttyS3) respectively. If your BIOS
does't report any serial ports, then your modem is UART-less (soft) one.
You cannot use it with Linux. See again
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

2. If BIOS does report your modem as a serial port (say 0x03f8 ->
ttyS0), then kernel should also detect it as 0x03f8. You can confirm
this looking into the last lines of the /var/log/messages file. Go to
the bottom of file, and while you browse it upwards you must see
something like :
~~~~~~~
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0 for Linux
NET4.0.
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: NET4: Linux TCP/IP 1.0 for NET4.0
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: IP Protocols: ICMP, UDP, TCP, IGMP
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: Initializing RT netlink socket
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: Starting kswapd v 1.5
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: Serial driver version 4.27 with MANY_PORTS
MULTIPORT SHARE_IRQ enabled
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: ttyS02 at 0x03e8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
39
Aug  1 18:25:46 coco2 kernel: VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe
~~~~~~~

3. If there is no kernel message such as "...kernel: ttyS02 at 0x03f8
(irq = 4) is a 16550A" then I don't know what to say. There *must* be.
(BTW, if you used irq=5, ignore that irq=4 message. It's a default value
kernel takes. You will override it later with "setserial").

4. If you set the modem to COM1 or COM2 ignore this. If you set it to
e.g. COM3/irq5 then manually enter "setserial -v /dev/ttyS2 irq 5".

5. When you enter "setserial -gav /dev/ttyS?" you will get a detailed
info about all serial devices on system. See if your modem is reported
properly.

Note: To issue a command from within rc.local, just put it in the end of
rc.local. This file (it is a script) is automatically run each time
Linux boots, so you won't have to enter "setserial" command manually
each time you boot Linux. But it is also okay if you enter the command
manually.

How does rexec compare with telnet for security? I know that rexec
sends the password in clear text. Does telnet do the same? Are there
other security concerns for rexec?

In /etc/sendmail.cf have this line:

# default delivery mode
O DeliveryMode=background

and make a file /etc/service.switch containing the lines:

hosts   files dns
aliases files

This works on RedHat 5.2 with sendmail upgraded to 8.9.1 which will I
think be pretty similar to what you're using.

Subject: Multiple ENet cards and Samba?
Date: Sun, 01 Aug 1999 20:05:55 GMT

I recently got a cable modem to my house and my Linux box configured to
do IPMasq for the Windoze boxen in my house. I got everything to cross
over very well with the exception of Samba. The Linux box appears in the
Network Neighborhood for the Win boxes but I get an error about
accessing the host.

Is there something I have to do to configure Samba to bind itself to the
internal network ethernet card, eth1 in this case? I have a gut feel
that it is trying to bind it to the eth0 which used to be the internal
net card but is now the cable modem's card, which BTW has to be this way
or dhcpcd just doesn't work!

Please e-mail as well.

On my small home network, I am trying to setup NIS. I've followed the NIS-

on the client. I checked by running "rpcinfo -p". I did the whole "ypinit -m"
thing, ran make in the /var/yp directory just to make sure, and set the
domainname on both systems to the same thing, "artitj.com". On the client, I
added the NIS server name to the yp.conf file. When I try to do a "ypcat

got:

The main problems seem to appear when loading sendmail ( [OK]), SMBD

/var/log/messages doesn't mention anything special about the latter :

However, a sendto command is launched about every minute and aborted

I am about to recompile without samba but I would like to understand
