Subject: new RH 5.2 install not recognizing 3c509 cards
Date: Sat, 08 May 1999 11:49:39 -0700

Hi,

I've installed RH 5.2 on a Micron machine and I'm having trouble getting
it to see a 3com509 ethernet card. I've actually tried 2 different
cards. One is a 3c509 and the other is a 3c509b, neither are seen by the
system.

When linux boots, it gives the message:

insmod: /lib/modules/preferred/net/3c509.o: symbol for parameter io not
found
delaying etho initialization

In my /etc/conf.modules I have:

alias eth0 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x300 irq=10

I have no idea what the io/irq should really be. I tried 340/9 and
various combinations, but can't determine the right combination.

I downloaded 3c5x9 and compiled it, I thoug the "-a" option might reveal
the settings, but it didn't.

I then downloaded 3c509cfg.exe and tried to get it to run under dosemu
but dosemu wouldn't startup.

Is there any way under linux to determine what the io/irq should
be...without having to put this card on a dos machine and check it out??

thanks -- Dean

I want to use Linux server as syslog server gathering info from cisco
routers. In the /etc/syslog.conf file i have an entry like following:

local7.debug /var/log/routerlog

and i am running sysylogd with -r option. On the router i have enabled
logging with the following commands:

service timestamps
logging <ip address>
logging trap info

But this does not seem to work. Can antbody point what i am missing here ?

You can try to get the most recent (and unstable) version by getting
it via CVS though I don't know whether or not it's included in their

This looks to me like you define a 192.168.2.0/24 subnet by the network
route to eth0 and want to use the ppp interface on a different subnet,
192.168.0.0/24 . The proxyarp option works only when the call-in
machine's IP address belongs to the same subnet as the ethernet LAN to
which the called-to machine is attached.

I'll cheerfully admit that this answer might not be correct, if it breaks
then you get to keep both pieces.

I'm running RH 6.0/kernel 2.2.7 on a 486/33 with 20MB of RAM.
The Intel EtherExpress 16 card referred to below is a 10BT ISA PnP
Ethernet card.

I have an Intel EtherExpress 16 card (as well as a WD8003, eth0, which
works fine and I have no problems with). It used to work just fine with
the generic kernel that got installed on my machine when I installed RH
6.0 (and RH 5.2, for that matter). Whenever I recompile my kernel, it
stops working, even though I built EtherExpress 16 support into the
kernel. I think before it was compiled as a module... is this necessary
to make it work? The card is an ISA PnP card... does this mean that I
have to use isapnp to make it work right? The format of isapnp.conf
looks really cryptic to me and I can't quite make it out. I know that
the card is currently set to IRQ 5 and IO 0x310. This is fine, doesn't
conflict with anything, and I'd rather just leave it there and tell my
machine that's where it is. Is there any way to do this? Right now it
just says, "Delaying eth1 initialization" upon startup.
I think maybe I'll just stop trying to use ISA PnP card with
Linux : ) Nah, I can figure it out... but if somebody could gimme some
pointers that would be great. Please cc:[EMAIL PROTECTED] since I
don't always read every message that comes through this newsgroup.
Thanks much!

I think you really like the PHP3/mySQL combination. We have some live

This is something one should ALWAYS do.
I (and probably most of us) asumed that you did. After all, it's part of
switching off PnP.

I have a TekTronix XP114C TekXpress xterminal that I'm trying to boot from a
linux box. Everything actually works I can even get xwindow to work (joy!),
but I have to jump through all kinds of hoops to get the terminal to ping the
linux host (not to mention boot from it). This is weird, but here goes:

Ping only works if I first reboot the terminal, then boot the server! If I
reboot or reset the terminal without rebooting the linux server, I loose my
ability to ping until the next time the server is booted.

Could this be a network card driver bug, a kernel bug, or a ping bug? I
think its a linux problem because I can ping a 95 box all day from the
terminal. If you have any ideas, I'd apprecitate hearing them. Also, if you
could direct me on how to futher investigate, that would be good, too.

Thanks!
David H.

|Ursa_M --> I am also using the VNC server and find it to be very reliable
and generally
|excellent. The install was easy. I tend to launch and kill the server
from a hyperterminal

Unless you kill
|the session, the next time you login you will be EXACTLY where you were
when you closed the

telnet or direct,
|to keep that from being a problem. On the other hand, if you had multiple
devices going and

device then this is a
|"feature" you would like. Personally, I haven't had a use for that yet so
just kill the

on either the
|Win98 or Linux side and is a very thin client on the Win98 side.
