It should be well documented in the JDK package.

>From what I recall - you just unpack the JDK in a directory, adding
this directory to your PATH in either /etc/profile or in your local
~/.profile.

I removed all other Java VM's (eg. kaffe) before I installed JDK.
(Not sure if this was necessary, though...)

Another one to check is www.linuxtraining.co.uk as they are offering free

Hello!
I want to create Linux-Win98 ethernet network. On Win98
machine ethernet card works fine, but on linux it doesn't
work (or at least that's my opinion). The driver is
Tulip (modified for specific card), i inserted is as the
module (my kernel is 2.2.10). I did "ifconfig", and when
i type "route -n" there's the route i need.
Each time i restart the computer i'm getting message:
"eth0: The transmiyyion stopped! CSR5 is 2678016, CSR6 is
816e2002". I have no idea what it means though :(
Also i'm not able to ping any computer from each other

Can someone help me with that please? Thanks in advance,
R.K.

Could anybody give me a hand please? --- Why can't I send/receive mail
on a client machine running win95/98 through Proxy server???

I set up a Red Hat Linux 6.0 Proxy Server following the document. When I
used a client machine (LAN machine) running Windows 95/98 to
send/receive mail (I'm using Netscape 4.51), it gave me a message:

A network error occurred when Netscape was receiving data. (Network
error: Connection refused.)

However, I can use Netscape to browse the web sites, it works very well.
Also I can send/receive mail within the intranet. Just I can not
send/receive my outside mailbox (from my ISP), neither can I join the
outside newsgroup.

Did anybody know how to fix this problem??? Please give me a hand.

I upgraded my wu-ftpd from 2.4.2 to 2.5.0 when the CERT advisory was

Wu-ftpd 2.4.2 is evil. Try talking to your friend's ftpd from a Mac

Hi

I am busy setting up RedHat 6.0 on a rebranded Chicony MP979, and am
struggling to get a PCMCIA network card set up. I am still waiting for
the supplier to tell me exactly what it is - also rebranded - but it
seems to work OK, insofar as I can see it and ping it. This is as far as
it gets, because I don't seem to be able to see out to the network. One
thing I have noticed is that any attempt to reach the network seems to
be routing via lo and not eth0. Am I missing something obvious, or is
there something more obscure on the go?

Define "request to the internet". *Something* is sending packets
via your dialled link for *some* reason. If you don't know what
you can turn diald's debug up and find out.

>BUT, now is the strange thing I don't understand:

Sounds like DNS then. With no diald there is no external link
so a DNS look up will fail quickly. The fail is then cached for
a short but reasonable amount of time so when you start diald
it isn't necessary to query external name servers.

>I'd like diald too work well at the first time, and not after doing the
>trick I've discovered randomly.

Then investigate the problem not the solution. Diald has excellent
debug features that will give you chapter and verse about what
packets it sees and what filter rules they match. Use them to
find out where the real problem is and then fix it :-).

Subject: Telnet question
Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 15:08:05 +0200

I have a RedHat 5.2 system with a telnet problem.

When I telnet to this system from another (linux, OS/2, windoze, terminal)
machine (on a local network, no connections to internet or other networks) I
immeadiately get a telnet connection but NO login prompt. after a minute or
so a login prompt appears, but I have to be fast to login then, or the
connection times out.

When I telnet to localhost on the RedHat machine I DO get a login prompt
directly after making the connection.

Other networking connections seem to work fine. (Apache, SAMBA, ping, telnet
from the RH to other machines etc.)

Is this a known problem, and can I solve this?

When I upgrade this system to RedHat 6.x, will this solve the problem, can I
solve it after an upgrade or do I have to solve it before I attempt to
upgrade?

Other than this all services seem to run fine.

Any suggestion will be greatly appreceated.

Thanks,

Sander

I have a similar setup, but a different problem. I have the two
different nets. However, on the machine that is the gateway between the
two nets, I want to run NIS as a slave (it is NOT the master NIS for the
primary net) to allow the second net to authenticate users off of the
primary net. However, I don't want the slave NIS to serve
authentication to the primary net. I tried setting up a
/var/yp/securenets file to limit access to the NIS slave server. My
entry looks like this:

255.255.0.0 192.168.0.0

where all my address on secondary and none on the primary start with
192.168 .

Everything seemed to be working okay, except that the slave server
started taking over authentication for the whole net. Any help would be
appreciated.

Yes, if "optimal" is defined that way. He may have meant Path MTU which

I have had this problem on RedHat5.2. Haven't found a cure yet, but a
lot of people seem to be having the same problem.

I think it is caused by IP masq doing a DNS lookup.
Diald + Samba works fine without IP masq (using the standard.filter).

Other people have suggested it might be NetBIOS activating a DNS lookup
and suggested modifying standard.filter, but I have tried this option
with no success.

What we need is an example of a working filter for this problem.
Unfortunately,as I am pretty much a Linux newbie I am at the limits of
my knowledge on all this.
